Hermit Islands, Papua New Guinea

The Hermit Islands (at bottom-right in the image) lie 162 km west of the island of Manus (in the Admiralty Islands) and 73 km southeast of the Ninigo Islands (at top-left in the image); the mouth of the Sepik River on the PNG mainland is situated 250 km to the southwest.

The islands form an island-barrier reef complex of 22 km by 15 km containing several small hilly islands (reaching 244 m on the island of Jalun) at its centre. On the reef perimeter, which is split by two passes in the west and northwest, are situated a further 13 islets. Islands located on the southern reef include: Leabon, Pechu, Makan, Pianau, Kocheran and Amot; on the northwest reef: Tatahau, Kena and Mono; on the east reef: Pemei; within the lagoon: Akib, Maron, Jalun, Tset, Luf, North Gochonsipi and South Gochonsipi.
