Editor's note

These pages were not written by medical professionals. My name is Patty and I am the editor and major contributor. The other contributors to the pages are often parents of children with cancer, parents from all walks of life who have learned a lot about medical practices, and about life with a cancer child. Many people from the online mailing lists have provided information for the pages.

I try my best to write and maintain accurate information. When applicable, my references are listed.

My own qualifications are these: Parent of a young adult who had acute lymphoblastic leukemia as a teen, Lab Coordinator for Organic Chemistry at CU Boulder, M.S. in Biochemistry, CU Boulder, and, perhaps I should include, computer addict and obsessed web surfer.

These writings are never to be substituted for personal consultations with your doctors.

9/05: To any techies out there, the summer of '05 overhaul came about for several reasons. I had trouble finding specific facts that I knew existed on my own web site, and realized that the 6-year old site needed a good reorganization. My son showed me some web pages that were done using CSS rather than tables and I was hooked. I got a large tome on CSS and began reading it wherever I went, and kept practicing. GoLive [my old workhorse even though I am pretty angry at Adobe for dumping my favorite application, FrameMaker for Mac OSX] has pretty good CSS support, but was slow rendering the pages. Um, maybe I was due for a new 'puter . . . so I took the happy plunge and nabbed a G5 dual 2 Ghz and it screams. It made trying style sheets a breeze. Then came the months-long process of reformatting each page, checking each link, re-reading each paragraph, entering each fact into a database for my planned site index.

Finally, on Sept 1, 2005, I uploaded the re-vamped site to ACOR. Note that I kept every single link the same as it was before, so that people that link to my site will not have broken links.

As a side note, I find that maintaining a site that consists mostly of links is really a pain in the neck these days. Sometimes I wonder if this ped-onc site is necessary in this day of Google searches. My new goal is to focus on adding new content, and to keep new links to a minimum. (But then again, I'm addicted to making lists.)

I'd like to thank ACOR for hosting this ped-onc site with no fees, no strings attached. And the late Steve Dunn for showing us how to build patient-generated web pages. Steve set the standard. He is sorely missed.
