Default Windows Key Hate? - Just Fix it and Stop Whining
This article is an Island. It cannot be linked to using wiki BB-codes.

[top]Introduction

The Windows key is a great key - and especially for Win7 users. Now with multiple WIN + arrow key combos you can dock left/right and minimize/maximize with a simple set of keystrokes (unless you own a HHKB - no arrows).

Plus I find the dome erotic......

BUT, some people disagree and call it Winbloze so I'll provide some alternatives in this Mod post. The first one is an all original - the AppleDow key. The others are a bit more practical. Pick one. But stop whining.

[top]The AppleDow Key

And before the Linux guys start jumping up and down I'll end up with some Penguin options.

To make an Appledow key you need:

- Apple Extended Key II keyboard (AEKII), cheap and plentiful on Ebay. Bid on the yellowest one you can because this involves destroying the case.

Mine was pristine - I just wanted the Rubber dampened sliders though - Heh, heh...DESTROY IT!!

- Drill bit

- Doublestick tape or silicon glue

The Apple logo upper left corner is actually made of metal. That's right folks, back in the Day Quality Meant Something! Now all we get are Unicomp stickers.

Now if you open up the keyboard and look behind the logo you will see a needle sized hole. The purpose of this is obvious to anyone that passed a Fluids Dynamics Physics class.

That label is REALLY stuck on there so don't just pry it out with a screwdriver. Take a drill bit and enlarge the hole.

And then just use a screwdriver to push out the Apple logo. Find your favorite keyboard and then stick it on to the "Dome Key That Must Not Be Named".

May be a bit gay but looks better than 99% of the Colored Key mods on KBDMania.net.

[top] Easy Mods

[top]Easy 1 - Get A Unix Keyboard

Buy a Cherry Cymotion Linux edition.

hahahah! This is a joke. Buying a Cherry keyboard in the US is impossible.

[top]Easy 2 - Buy A Unicomp

Buy a Unicomp Linux Buckling Spring keyboard. No windows key but you have a choice of two layouts. They'll also sell individual keys if you ask nicely.

[top]Easy 3 - Stickers

[top]Medium Difficulty - Key Swaps

[top]Key Swap #1 - Das Unix keys

Das Keyboard $15 - Fully Filco Compatible - they are laser printed and not quite as nice as Cherry Corp lasers or as high contrast as Filcos

Sad Penguin is Sad

[top]Key Swap #2 - Deck

EDIT: NO LONGER AVAILABLE - SOLD OUT - See the discussion pages for more pics and details

Plus you get Trucker Girl. These Deck keys look good lit up.

[top]Key Swap #3 - Filco Blanks

Get a Filco Blank Key Set and use ALT or CTRL - Yah, spendy solution for 2 keys but you'll need to replace that shiny spacebar sometime. 1:1 Das/Steelseries/Rosewill replacement as well but texture will be different.

Not easy to find - Elitekeyboards stopped selling them but available from KeyboardCo and AusPC (product number KE-10487)..

[top]Key Swap #4 - Bug Majestouch to stock them

Majestouch at Elitekeyboards said he was looking into it. Vent that righteous anger by drudging up this old post and emailing him a copy at Elitekeyboards. Tell him Ripster sent ya.

[top]Hard Difficulty

[top]Just SANDBLAST that sucker.

[top]Get Creative - Glue Up a Custom Key

Do the Pimp Your Keyboard Mod using keys from Signature Plastic or ANY key that fits using the gluing jig shown in the mod.

Me? I like the NeXT Double Shot the best.
