American College of Pediatricians. This is a small splinter group of medical professionals who do not support the mainstream view of the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) that homosexuality is a normal aspect of human diversity. The organization was formed in 2002 in opposition to the AAP's support of adoption by LGBT parents. The College believes that allowing LGBT adoption is "dangerously irresponsible."
American Family Association. The American Family Association (AFA) targets the multifaceted “attack” on “traditional family values” from nearly every group that disagrees with their positions. They claim over one million members and have a number of affiliated projects to assist in their work, including Agape Press, American Family Radio, and AFA Journal. The main action they take is in the form of boycotts, with past boycotts against Disney, K-Mart, and NBC.
They are strong supporters of “reparative therapy” and strongly oppose any inclusion of LGBT content into public education programs. Their anti-LGBT record is lengthy, including their contention that AIDS is a “gay plague”, that homosexuals were responsible for the Holocaust, and that "Under homosexual activists' political agenda, our children would face a future in which traditional marriage and families have been legally devalued, while state government -- despite the severe threat it poses to personal and public health -- not only legally endorses but uses our tax dollars to subsidize deadly homosexual behavior."
Christian Communication Network. This is a public relations firm run by Gary L. McCullough, who was the press agent for the parents of Terri Schiavo, and for the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. The Christian Communication Network has a close relationship with the Family Research Institute (see below) and publishes press statements supporting the work of Paul Cameron (see below). McCullough believes that homosexuality is "a destructive behavior".
Courage/Encourage. These are Roman Catholic support groups that follow in the vein of other Ex-Gay ministries. "Courage," for homosexuals and "Encourage," for friends and family members.
Family Research Institute. A small Colorado based research group headed up by Paul Cameron, Ph.D. who was removed from membership of the American Psychological Association in 1983, and who was condemned by the American Sociological Association for "consistently misinterpret[ing] and misrepresent[ing] sociological research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism." Cameron has publicly stated that homosexuals are more likely to commit crimes and molest children than heterosexuals. Cameron's research is generally considered to be unscientific and flawed by the majority of the research community. His work is published in the "vanity" journals; these are journals where you pay to be published and they are often not subjected to peer review like the mainstream scientific journals. Cameron believes that supporters of the LGBT community are "death marketers" who are "destroy[ing} the US from within".
Focus on the Family. A conservative Christian organization, which conducts seminars nationally to involve fundamentalists in the political process and to influence education professionals. This group sponsors one-day conferences called “Love Won Out” which present their widely discredited opinion that: a) “reparative therapy” is an opportunity “for those who wish to escape (homosexuality)”, and b) homosexuality is a morally wrong and dangerous behavior choice.
Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH). According to their website, JONAH is the only Jewish based organization dedicated to assisting individuals with "unwanted same sex" (my quotes) attractions move from “gay” to “straight.” It uses the same arguments as the Christian groups in its opposition to homosexuality.
Liberty Counsel. Florida based group, led by Matthew Staver, which filed suit in federal court to stop same-sex marriage after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Council ruling in 2004, and filed suit against the San Francisco mayor’s right to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Staver is considered to be “top legal counsel” by Jerry Falwell. The three main objectives of Liberty Counsel are: 1) advancing “religious freedom”, 2) defending “traditional values”, and 3) defending the “right to life”. Liberty Counsel represented P-FOX (see below) in the lawsuit they brought against the Montgomery County, Maryland Board of Education for including sexual orientation issues in their sexual education curriculum.
National Association for Research and Therapy for Homosexuality (NARTH). NARTH (founded in 1992) is a trade organization which exists to promote reparative therapy (a practice which has been declared unethical by all of the major mental health and medical professional associations). It has strong ties to the ex-gay movement and has developed deeply flawed and questionable “research” about the “causes” and life-expectancy consequences of homosexuality. NARTH considers “Same-Sex Attraction Disorder” to be curable, and contends that it is caused by bad childhood experiences and poor parenting.
Parents & Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, (PFOX). PFOX is a top-down organization run by a small office funded by a single source. Public records show that in 2003, PFOX had an income of $33,000 from a single donor. The same records shows that Richard Cohen is its Board President. In 2002, Cohen was permanently banned from membership of the American Counseling Association for unethical practices. PFOX is believed to be a front for the Family Research Council. PFOX sponsors billboards, and subway and media advertisements which push the discredited notion that homosexuality is a choice which can be corrected through so called reparative therapy. Reparative therapy has been declared unethical by all of the major medical and mental health professional associations.
Positive Alternatives to Homosexuality (PATH). PATH's website states, "PATH is a non-profit coalition of organizations that help people with unwanted same-sex attractions (SSA) realize their personal goals for change -- whether by developing their innate heterosexual potential or by embracing a lifestyle as a single, non-sexually active man or woman." On PATH's website you will find links to many Radical Right organizations who have in common the fact that they all want to "save" homosexuals through reparative therapy.
