A Christmas Story

One to share with the kids

I’m a sucker for anything with cute barefoot kids, beach scenes and New Zealand accents, so this one was a triple whammy!  Enjoy!

Multitasking Mamas

Our ability to juggle - blessing or curse?

“I am woman. Hear me roar.” I can do 5 things at the same time. What skill! Uh, right? Lately, I’m having my doubts.

A priest recently spoke about Mother Teresa. A friend of his was able to spend a few minutes with her. What struck him most was her spirit of detachment.

At the very moment she was in his presence, a million things with her order’s sisters were going on around the world. Important... READ MORE

PC Games for Kids

Your recommendations?

I’m in the market for a few last minute gifts for my nephews and it’s been suggested that computer games would be a big hit.  The boys in question are in pre-K and first grade, and both are “all boy” but also love academic things like reading, math, animals and dinosaurs.  It’s been a while since I shopped for games for the PC and I’d love recommendations from our readers for games that are a hit... Advent Reading ... Mom Style

We all have family-favorite stories and picture books that we read each Advent season with our children.

Those special books that light up the kids’ eyes and prompt zealous squeals of, “Oh, I remember this story! Do you remember this story? I LOOOOVE this story!” Those special books that touch our own hearts, too. Don’t even get me started on The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. I merely picture... READ MORE

Baby's First Christmas

How do you celebrate?

For each First Christmas of our children, I have always made sure to get a special Christmas ornament. With some children this ornament has been quite fancy; with others it has been homemade (and possibly a little too simple)—but it always involves an ornament that can include a picture. I take a picture of that baby and pop it into the ornament and voila!—something the boys look forward to hanging... READ MORE

'Tis the Season

for Christmas card pictures - what do you like?

Since it’s December, one of the things on my to-do list is Christmas cards. It’s a multi-part process: writing the accompanying letter, ordering the cards, making sure we have enough stamps, actually stuffing and addressing the pile that seems to grow as we work.

But for me, by far the most daunting part is obtaining the dreaded Christmas Card Picture.

I only have two children to photograph, so you’d... READ MORE

Are Child-Free Flights a Good Idea?

Or a really really bad one?

Anyone who flies has probably had the not-so-fun experience of sharing the cramped space inside of an airplane with a screaming, crying child.

When it happens to me, I am usually 1) grateful if it’s not my own child and 2) sympathetic to the parents of the screamer.

I suppose being a mom myself makes me more inclined toward sympathy than some, but still I was disturbed by the attitudes of some people... READ MORE

Advent Wreath With Magnetism

I got this magnetic Advent wreath for a nephew a couple of years ago, and it was a big hit.

It doesn’t take the place of real candles and greens, but, for those of you who use your fridge or magnetic boards for learning in your homes, it really adds to the season beautifully.

A way for younger children to participate easily and safely in the “lighting” of the wreath? Music to a mom’s ears!

Okay, Mama!

Loving (and surprised by) a new stage

The children were supposed to be tidying the block mess they’d made, but Blaise got upset about something and came to sit on my lap.

I told him that he’d better go help his sister, but then his sister’s curly head bounced around the corner.

“That’s okay, Mama,” she chirped. “I can clean up all by myself!”

And as she skipped away to get the job done (when I checked later, the room was spotless) I thought... READ MORE

A Big Kid!

Camilla turns four

Last week was a big one in our family - a few days after we found out about the pregnancy, Camilla turned four!

She was thrilled, of course. The moment her eyes popped open in the morning, she chirped “It’s my birt-day!” The rest of the day, though low-key, was lots of fun.

By the following day my girl had moved on. “Now I’ll be five next. I’m just gonna keep getting bigger, Mama,” she said to me.... READ MORE
