Mumbai, Aug 5

Mr Ratan Tata's successor, who will head the over $70 billion diversified salt-to-steel Tata conglomerate, is expected to be named by March.

The Group will be rigorously working over the next six to seven months to appoint a candidate, Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons, told newspersons after the shareholder meeting of group company Indian Hotels Company.

“Mr Ratan Tata is retiring only by the end of 2012. So, by February-March (2011), we should come up with the name of the successor,” said Mr R.K. Krishna Kumar, Director at Tata Sons Ltd.

The company is looking to have a successor in place as early as early next year to allow a smooth transition from Mr Tata to the new head. “This will give the person a chance to work with him (Mr Tata) to understand the business,” he said.

It is expected that the names of members on the successor selection committee will be announced on Friday. The Tata Group had recently announced that a five-member committee had been formed to find a successor for Mr Tata. The successor will lead a business empire that has 98 companies across 80 countries.
