Note the unusual pike's head. It is normal to use the style that has the golden crown with a crowned British Lion on top. It is possible that this Battalion was making a determined effort to be "Australian" not British. Another indicator is that this was one of very few Battalions in RNSWR that had a motto in plain English, not Latin or Gaelic.
