Kangaroo Tour: 1921-1922

Sean Fagan of RL1908.com

Kangaroos - 1921/22 - Duncan ThompsonThe Kangaroos toured again under the name of "Australasia", but in reality there was only one New Zealander in the 28 man party.

Captained by Les Cubitt of Eastern Suburbs, the Kangaroos were beaten for the Ashes in desperately close circumstances.

The tour featured the remarkable try scoring feats of Cec Blinkhorn (39 tries), Harold Horder (35) and Frank Burge (33). The English team was led by Harold Wagstaff, hero of the historic 1914 "Rorke's Drift" Test.

The First Test seemed to be Australia's when Burge scored a late try but was ruled against by the referee. England then scored a try near fulltime and won 6-5.

In the 2nd Test Australia's backline of Horder, Carstairs, Vest and Blinkhorn cut loose after scores were 2-all at half-time - Australia won in fine style 16-2.

The deciding 3rd Test was played on a snow-bound heavy field, much to the dismay of the fleet-footed Kangaroos. Australia suffered a cruel blow early in the match when they were reduced to 12 men after Fraser was injured.

In difficult conditions and with no luck the Kangaroos battled on but lost the match 6-0 and with it the Ashes were lost.
