A ciclovia is either a permanently designated bicycle route or a temporary event, the closing of the street to automobiles for use by others.

All I want for Christmas is urban mobility

This has been a big year for bike-sharing, bike lanes, and all manner of bicycle-related urban improvements. 

That emphasis is now showing up in smart growth holiday offerings as well. The Coalition for Smarter Growth, in the the Washington, DC, region, is offering reduced-price memberships in Capital BikeShare or credits on ZipCar use to those who join the Coalition. 

Atlanta area projects win awards

Three projects that were worked on by Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates (TSW), an Atlanta-based planning, architecture, and landscape architecture firms, have won awards from the Atlanta Regional Commission. 

At the Commission's State of the Region Breakfast, the awards that were presented included these:

The protected bike lane on 9th Avenue was installed in fall 2007. In its first year, crashes involving all street users were down 56 percent, while bicycle ridership along the avenue increased 50 percent. Courtesy of EPA.
