A Brief History of Diplomacy

"A Brief History of United States Diplomacy" began as an exhibit sponsored by ADST to chronicle the outlines of the conduct of U.S. diplomacy.  This extensive display still appears in the Exhibit Hall of the Department of State main building.  A companion booklet was published by ADST in 1995 and provisionally updated in 2000.  "A Brief History of Diplomacy" is distributed to incoming classes of new Foreign Service Officers and to newly appointed U.S. ambassadors to foreign countries around the world. The Stephen Low Library at the Foreign Service Institute mounts a poster exhibit version of the history at the beginning of each new junior officer class, about six times a year.

Center for Diplomacy

Based on a concept from ADST, the Center for Diplomacy was launched in October 2000 by then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, accompanied by former Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Architectural plans have been drawn and a committee chaired by former ADST President Ambassador Stephen Low has begun to raise the funds necessary to establish the center.  Proposals are being explored to pattern the center in the interactive style of the Smithsonian and the Newseum, and to recruit retired Foreign Service personnel to serve as docents to lead the public through historical and interactive displays illustrating U.S. diplomacy and the daily lives and service of U.S. diplomats.

Diplomatic Memorabilia

ADST serves as a depository for memorabilia from the careers of distinguished American diplomats, including the Medal of Freedom awarded to Constance Harvey, a silver tray presented to Ambassador Clare Boothe Luce, and a consular uniform and saber from the 19th century. Selected items from the collection are displayed at ADST headquarters and others are held in safekeeping for future display.
