Security for the G8-G20 summits will cost taxpayers close to $1-billion.

Supplementary estimates released by Parliament Tuesday indicate federal government will spend $654-million on security on top of the $179-million announced in March, for a total of $833-million.

The total figure greatly exceeds some published media estimates of the overall costs.

In fact, the government anticipates the final cost could exceed $900-million, meaning that the cost of providing security to world leaders meeting for a few days of meetings near Huntsville, and then Toronto, will cost as about as much as was believed to be spent for security during the two-week-long Vancouver Olympic Games.

The RCMP, which is deploying thousands of officers to the events, is to get the lion’s share of the funding, followed by the Public Safety Department, followed by the Department of National Defence.

“The scope and magnitude of the security operations associated with hosting the two summits back to back is unprecedented — representing the largest deployment of security personnel for a major event in Canadian history,” said Chris McCluskey, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, in an email.

The supplementary estimates released today say the millions will be used to “design, plan, coordinate and implement security operations for the summits; provide the RCMP and its security partners with accommodation facilities for the G8 and G20 Summits; procure information technology and portable communication assets; work with federal, provincial and municipal security partners responsible for providing Summit security; and ensure the safekeeping of all International Protected Persons attending the summits.”

  1. I still think my idea with what to do during the G20 summit is best, coz if no one turns up and instead do really cool things in their own communities that week, the Canadian Police are gonna feel a right bunch of pratts standing around in their riot gear all day doing nothing. The Canadian government would look really stupid spending all that money on nothing, and no-body gets hurt.

Then we could be holding peace parties in our city parks with music and fun and kids playing in the sun and kick off a New Renaissance within our communities while waking a few people up.

I think you have a good point there Phil. They can’t get enough useful idiots to turn up to riot amongst themselves that’s for sure!

It would be nice to have a print-view with the logo, date and source URL.

  4. Wow, thanks for sharing. It never ceases to amuse and amaze me that foreign countries are better informed about the costs and polictics of the Summits, and hundreds of other news worthy stories.
Our own government, keeps us realatively ingnorant for fear of back lash…not that speaking our minds will change what it is a dozen politicians want… Totally ridiculous and unacceptable I say !!! It’s time for change and that time is NOW. What on this toxic, greedy, earth is going on ?
