Reporting to the Nevada/Utah News Editor, the administrative correspondent supervises a team of reporters in the Salt Lake City bureau who cover spot news and enterprise in Utah.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The correspondent sets the tone for aggressive news and enterprise coverage, putting a premium on accountability and investigative reporting for a regional, national and global audience. The correspondent also will serve as the AP's lead reporter in Utah. The correspondent is a news leader in the region and will coordinate with the news editor and Breaking News Staffer to ensure AP remains the dominant news provider and produces a strong state report. The correspondent also serves as a deputy news editor for the two-state territory and participates in an on-call manager rotation on weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have demonstrated excellence as a beat reporter, writer and editor on a varied array of issues _ especially the environment. Applicants should also have demonstrated experience overseeing a team of reporters and building a beat structure. Demonstrated aggressive use of public records, source development and computer-assisted reporting experience are a plus.
Applicants must be able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories of global interest and work accurately under deadline pressure - with reporters, as well as on their own reporting assignments. Applicants need strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats, meet deadlines and communicate effectively with editors in distant locations. Applicants need to understand the growing importance of multimedia news and be able to coordinate with AP staffers from other formats. The successful candidates should have at least five years of full-time reporting experience and some management experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station or AP bureau.
Proficiency in reporting and producing content in multiple platforms, including text, photo and video, is a plus.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required.
Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
