SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Although it was overshadowed because of Governor Herbert's inauguration, history was made in Salt Lake County this week.

Monday, Sim Gill became America's first India-born district attorney.

He's also this week's guest on ABC 4’s, "On the Record.”

At his swearing-in this week, Sim Gill thanked his father.

He thanked his father coming to America but also for lessons about hard work, sacrifice and the American dream.

Sim Gill told us on this week’s, “On the Record,”

"He wanted to provide us with an opportunity like any other immigrant who comes to this country.”

This why Sim Gill's father came to America four decades ago, to give his family the opportunity for a better life.

Monday, after his swearing-in, Gill publicly thanked his father, who was in the audience,

“…[He] emigrated here in 1969 and...sacrificed to come here to give me an opportunity, to my brother, to my family to pursue the American dream."

On “On the Record," Gill also had this to say about his dad,

“I learned from him. I learned that hard work and perseverance equates success. He taught me that you can dream anything you want."

And, yes, in case you're wondering, Sim Gill still very much believes in the American dream.

"Talk to the newly arriving immigrant. They know what the ideals of America are. What freedom really means to them. What economic success means to them. What the opportunities that are presented in this country means to them."

Now our entire interview with Sim Gill can be seen this Sunday on "On the Record."

Its airs at its new time of 7:30 AM on ABC 4.

It will also be posted Sunday morning on our website, ABC 4.com
