The Ducktown Basin Museum is located on the historic Burra Burra mine site where 300 acres of denuded land has been set aside as a memorial to the devastation of the Copper Basin. They do have a collection area now on site. It consist of three dump truck loads of ore, not tailings, that were moved on site from the ore bins at Tennessee Shaft. This site is in a gated area behind the Shop Building. They do charge an additional fee for collecting on the pile. The fee for collecting is $7.00 per person. If you wish to tour the museum and collect on the pile the fee is $9.00 per person. COLLECTING:Garnet, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, Pyrrhotite, Actinolite. DIRECTIONS: (Atlanta) From the I-75/I-575 north interchange, take I-575 north. Follow the four lanes as it turns into SR 5 at Nelson and US 76(SR 5, SR 515) at East Ellijay. Turn left onto SR 5 at the Blue Ridge McDonalds and continue on to Mccaysville. At Copperhill, SR 5 becomes SR 68. Follow this highway to Ducktown. The Museum is located on your right about 3/4 of a mile past US 64. Watch for the sign! Drive Time: (Atlanta) It should take 2 hours for this 101 mile trip to Ducktown, Tennessee. |
