What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a system which delivers the latest news and features to your computer, rather like an old fashioned news wire. Users can get updated content automatically sent from dozens of websites, saving you the hassle of having to click from site to site in order to get the latest stories.
An RSS feed contains headlines and links back to full news stories.You can now get text, pictures, audio and video by subscribing to RSS feeds.
How does RSS work?
RSS works by getting your computer to download what is called an XML (eXtensible Markup Language) feed onto a tool called an RSS reader. XML is a data stream with the latest headlines and stories from the section of the website you have chosen.
RSS readers are small software programs that collate different feeds and display the story information, allowing you to sift through headlines from several different sources in one central place.
The feed is then updated every time new articles or content appears, so all you have to do is load your RSS reader and read – you don’t need to visit the individual websites.
You can also subscribe to as many RSS feeds as you want to, meaning that you can get content from all of your favourite sites in one place.
How Do I Use These Feeds?
Once you have an RSS reader, subscribing to a feed is easy. Simply look for the distinctive orange RSS logo on the website or section that you want to subscribe to.
Then you can do one of two things.
• Click on the icon, and while keeping the mouse button pressed drag the icon into your RSS reader. This will automatically download the content you selected into your reader.
• Click on the orange RSS icon or the text link underneath the logo and copy and paste the URL of the page it loads into the ‘add feed’ section of your RSS reader.
How often are the RSS feeds updated?
The RSS feeds are updated throughout the day. Every time a news story is added to gulfnews.com, it will also be added to the RSS feed within the hour.
Where Do I Get an RSS Reader?
RSS readers are usually available as downloads or are sometimes attached to already existing internet software. Most are free to use. See the list below for examples of popular feed readers.
