Netanyahu: Barak's split from Labor strengthens Israel's government

Likud MK: Barak is going to form a Lieberman-like party; right-wing MK Eldad: He should have quit politics altogether; Meretz urges remaining Labor members to join forces in Knesset.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Defense Minister Ehud Barak's split from the Labour Party has strengthened Israel's governing coalition.

"The government has grown much stronger today, in its governance, in its stability -- and this is important for Israel," Netanyahu said after Barak and four Labor allies broke from the party.

"The whole world knows, and the Palestinians know, that this government will be around for the next few years and that it is with this government that they should negotiate for peace," Netanyahu told reporters.

A senior aide to Netanyahu indicated earlier in the day that Barak's decision would allow the government to operate more smoothly. Netanyahu had been fully aware of Barak's decision, the aide told Israel Radio.

"Ultimately, this move is going to serve to stabilize the government and in so doing we hope to strengthen the peace process," said a member of Netanyahu's staff.

"There were people who were telling the Palestinian leadership that the Labour Party was about to bolt, that the coalition is unstable, that they can wait this government out," added the staff member, who asked not to be identified.

"Today's development shows that was not a correct analysis, and it is our genuine hope that the Palestinians will be returning to the negotiations soon and once those negotiations start we hope we can move forward towards a historic agreement."

Responses from Knesset factions began filtering in soon after Barak informed lawmakers of his decision in a letter to Knesset.

Opposition leader and Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni said during a Kadima faction meeting  that "it is a bad day for Netanyahu's government but I believe it is also a day of hope for Israel."

"The Netanyahu government is a narrow government that is crumbling from within due to political degeneration and the absence of direction or vision," Livni said. "The only medicine for the government's political opportunism and loss of principles is elections. Kadima calls again today in a loud clear voice – go to elections."

MK Aryeh Eldad, of the right-wing National Union – National Religious Party, said that Barak's decision to quit the party provided only "half" of a solution. "The fragmentation of the Labor Party is only half the battle; the second half will take place when Barak ends his political career and puts us out of our misery," he said.

MK Ilan Gilon, faction whip of the left-wing Meretz, said Barak's ideology had never been one with the dovish Labor Party.

"He never shared the values of the Labor movement," said Gilon. "We can only hope that the rest of the Labor faction still sitting in the government will leave the coalition as well."

He urged the remaining Labor ministers to join parliamentary force with Meretz and consider establishing a united social-democratic Zionist movement.

An unnamed source in the Likud party criticized Barak for taking on the political ideology of hardline Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. "Barak has established his own Lieberman-like political party, and has surrounded himself with four dwarves who will do his bidding."

He tells the truth - "the state comes first". That's what he was doing all the time while most other colleagues were busy with little dirty politics. He knew all along that he, and only he, can do the right job of remaking the IDF into a great, efficient force. FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE STATE! At the same time, he always tried to pull the government centerwise. In this, he rarely succeeded, but his heart is always in the right place. So, he SERVES THE COUNTRY CONTINUOUSLY. He doesn't waste time with opposition or with calumny, but he's working, all the time, BIG! And intelligently. Let Peretz and Shelly Achimovitch continue their important work and leave Barak alone. Bye Bye to them ....

The Black Night proclaims to King Arthur, "I'm invincible!" Monty Netanyahu loses a loyal sycophant and crows about "It's just a flesh wound!" When John Cleese performed as the Black Night it was funny. Netanyahu is just pathetic.

If Barak splits from the Labor party, he should wait for the next round of elections or ask for a new elections, at which he declares his new party. All other solutions are dictatorship-like and illegal. He, if democratic, should ask first for the electors for their votes!

The winds of change are blowing around the Mediterranean. Pressure is ratcheting up on Israels. Perhaps the UN resolution will be the spark that brings the government down.

From the beginning of his political career, barak never shared the values of Labour. He and lieberman are clones and his political career was marked by deceit, duplicity and arrogance. Good riddance. Notice the boasting from netanyahu as barak betrays his party. He declares that the government is now in a better position to hold firm in its intransigence in negotiating with the Palestinians. In the days ahead we will see a robust advance in further construction in the occupied territories and the juaisation of EJ. Check baraks's record since his deceitful moves made to look like gestures toward peace, his "generous offer" at Camp David, up till the present with his stance on the illegal outposts (which he committed to the US would be down, and how many yrs ago was that and where are those more than 20 illegal outposts today? As for the call of Meretz for the formation of a new, social democratic zionist coalition, well, good luck, but even Meretz must know in their heart of hearts that that dream has turned into a nightmare and they havent a chance. Very soon Meretz will find itself in the same position of Hadash.

As Barak is no longer part of the coalition, I can't wait for Bibi to appoint a new Defense Minister who may actually do the job he is meant to do: Defend Israel! Good riddance to Barak. I am still dumbfounded that in my naivete as an Oleh many years ago, I actually voted for the traitor.

..sloganwas " Barak Barach" That was a slur gainst the most decorated Israeli commander in history of Hagana and IDF. Barak got burned in dealing with Araft (PA/PLO) He offered Arafts Administartion 95% of WB and East Jerusalem. Instead to negotiate further the fine points of a Peace Agreemnt Araft started Intifada II. Thats what brought Barak to his current political outlook vis-a-vis negotiation with PA. Acrually the situation now is more unstable. Araft could have persued peacefull negotiation but didn't an incited Palestian Arabs up to last conciuos moment. Even in the speech 2 weeks befor departure to Paris he called on Palestinians :Terrorize them (Jew).." Abbas now is ppresiding over PA on WB and has support of his Mukata headquarters. Rest of WB people are at least 60% Hamas suporters. Gaza is under Hamas rule after coup d'etat in 2007 against coalition partners (Fatah) Hams follows Islamic Irans rulers orders. So who exactly are you want Israel to negotiate with..WB PA or Hams which wants the destruction of Israel. Barak and natanyahu refuse to behave like Judenrats in Ghettos. Do you think, Labor under Ben Eliezer or Braverman will negotiate with Hamas-PLO Duo? Will Mitzna negotiate under prsent situation were PAL are leaderless and under illussions backed and funded monetarily by Islamic Iran? I allways voted for Ahdud Avoda, MAPAM , Labor. But I am quite attuned to political and startegic realities. Signing a worthless Peace with ruderless Palestinian Arabs is a national suicide.for Jews. Shalom
