DEFINITIONS:

For this study Temperate and Boreal forest are those which lie outside the tropics.
Forests are ecosystems dominated by trees (woody plants with a single stem, or phanerophytes) with a canopy cover > 30%. An additional category, 'Sparse trees and parkland', includes areas with a canopy cover of 10 - 30% so that the maps encompass FAO's FRA definition of forest cover.

The geographical designations in this map do not imply any opinion on the part of WCMC concerning the legal status of any country or the delimitation of its boundaries.
