The Other Side

The Flames came into this game knowing that they had to bounce back from a tough shootout loss against an opponent breathing down their necks, and that they did with a very solid effort and a well-deserved 3-1 victory over the defending champs.

Game 55--Blackhawks@Flames: One Up

Next Game

After having their winning streak snapped in a shootout loss to the Kings on Saturday, the Flames (26-21-7) look to get back on track tonight against the Blackawks (27-21-4) with the season series tied at one win apiece and eighth place on the line (7:30 MST, Sportsnet West

The 'Hawks are 6-3-1 in the last ten games and are in the midst of a six-game road trip, on which they are 1-1 after losing to the Canucks on Friday, and are a healthy bunch, missing just one player in forward Ryan Johnson. For the Flames, Niklas Hagman will sit out again tonight with what is believed to be a "lower body" injury, and is day-to-day.

As Mitch pointed out in the game preview, the Flames will have to be a lot more disciplined than they were Saturday night against the Kings, as Chicago scored all four of their goals on the powerplay in the last meeting between these two teams; the Blackhawks possess the league's most dangerous man advantage unit, and although the Flames have been solid on the PK recently, it is important that they stay out of the box and try to play at even strength and/or on the powerplay as much as possible.

Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks despite struggling in his past five games, with two regulation losses and an OT loss, while Miikka Kiprusoff will again get the start for the home side.

Enjoy the game everyone and celebrate Robyn Regehr's 800th career game in the comments. It really is amazing that he's made it this far. Go Flames.

Game Preview #55

Flames vs. Hawks--7:30PM MST on Sportsnet West

The Flames are currently ahead of the Stanley Cup champion 'Hawks in the standings by one point, but the Hawks hold two games in hand. This is the tightest spread I can recall in either Conference this late in the season, as a mere 11 points separates 12 teams in the playoff hunt, from the third-place Stars to the 14th-place Blues. The teams at the bottom of the standings are also the teams that, for the most part, hold games in hand.

A Case of the Mondays: To Win, or Not to Win?

Well, the Flames' winning streak came to an end over the weekend with Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the L.A. Kings; it was nice while it lasted, but the team has bigger fish to fry, beginning tonight when they take on the Chicago Blackhawks, a team that they can never quite seem to figure out. After thumping the 'Hawks 7-2 at home back in November, the Flames overcame a 2-0 deficit in a December 5th contest at the United Center, but would go on to lose4-2 amidst one of their most frustratingly hot-and-cold periods of hockey this season.

While a win tonight would be nice, the Flames' recent streak still has many unconvinced that this team is capable of keeping abreast with the West's top eight long enough to earn a post-season birth as teams like the Kings and Blackhawks begin to bounce back into form. The team is once again in that awkward middle-ground between being a playoff team and a lottery team, and, barring a Montreal-esque run, doesn't have the tools to survive a first round matchup with the likes of the Canucks or Wings. With the trade deadline just two weeks away, the sentiment seems to be that Feaster will largely stand pat aside from some minor tinkering, opting to make any potentially larger moves in the off-season. WIth ten games remaining between now and February 28th and five against teams directly above or below the Flames in the crowded standings, that could certainly change. One small slide and the playoff picture could be drastically different (read: the home side better nip this one in the bud).

The Other Side

The Flames winning streak officially came to an end last night, as the home side came back from being one down three times in this game before eventually falling 4-3 in a shootout. With the loser point, the Flames remain one point out of eighth in the West, tied with Minnesota at 59 points, although the Wild have two games in hand.

Next Game

The Flames (26-21-6) will try for their seventh consecutive win tonight against the visiting L.A. Kings (28-22-2), who are steadily getting back on the winning side of things, picking up at least a point in their past six games. The Kings defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in Wednesday night, with Jack Johnson scoring the game-winner late in the third period.

Game #54--Flames vs. Kings - Feb 5, 2011 (8:00 pm MST, CBC)

Pre-Game Summary

The Flames are the hottest team in the NHL right now. Over the last ten games they have an 8-1-1 record.  The Kings struggled a bit in January with a 5-4-1 record, but have been getting back to form recently, going 4-0-1 in their last five games. Both teams are tied in points at 58 with the Kings holding a game in hand, and both teams are one point out of the final playoff spot in the West and have not lost in regulation in their past five contests. This is a big game for both teams, as someone’s run is going to end.

History didn't serve the Thrashers well in their last game against the Flames, and the Kings' last victory at the 'Dome was way back on December 31, 2005. This one is going to be the game to watch tonight in the NHL.
