shane pruitt band079 300x200 Music/EventsIn today’s ever expanding market of musicians and musical acts, finding trueroots music built on heritage and yet staying original becomes harder and harder to find.  Herein lies the foundation for one of the most explosive blues acts coming out of the Southeast today, The Shane Pruitt Band.
Lead man Shane Pruitt hails from Spartanburg, SC, where the musical roots of the blues and southern rock have been living and breathing for years on end.  Birthing such musical talents and styles like those of Toy Caldwell and The Marshall Tucker Band, David Ball, Champ Hood, Walter Hyatt, and many others, Spartanburg has named Shane Pruitt its “Instrumentalist of the Year” for eight years and running.

Living and breathing the blues and gospel, The Shane Pruitt Band embodies a regional tradition while bringing its original tone and flare to every performance.
Finding itself ever-searching in musical traditions between Delta Blues, Gospel, and Southern Rock, The Shane Pruitt Band embraces in the Jam Band traditions of improvisation and an ever-evolving musical experience.  Picking up momentum with every performance, Shane Pruitt and his trio are driving towards uncharted waters while wowing critics everywhere they play.

AVLLovesMtns 194x300 Music/EventsAppalachian Voices and Restoring Eden will host the first-ever “Asheville Loves Mountains” concert on Sunday, Jan 30th at Pisgah Brewing Co. in hopes to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of mountaintop removal on Appalachia. The concert will feature up-and-coming North Carolina darlings “Matrimony,” hometown favorites the “Alex Krug Trio” and “Jonathan Ammons & the Electric Ghost,” along with celebrated touring bands, Minneapolis, MN-based “Dewi Sant” and Athens, GA-based “Efren.”

Information about NC’s effect on Mountaintop Removal:

Millions of tons of explosives are being detonated in the Appalachian Mountains to mine coal via mountaintop removal; a devastating practice in which coal companies literally blow the tops off mountains and dump them into nearby valleys and streams, exposing toxic heavy metals and burying headwater streams. As a result, communities near these sites suffer from devastated watersheds, poisoned drinking water, flooding, damaged buildings from blasting, and the obliteration of the Appalachian Mountains they hold dear. To date, over 500 mountains have been destroyed by this practice.

While mountaintop removal mining does not occur here in North Carolina, Asheville has a very direct connection to the practice. Not only is North Carolina is the largest purchaser of mountaintop removal coal in the country, Progress Energy Carolinas purchases coal from Virginia and Kentucky to power the electricity of this area.

So please stop in & enjoy the music, drink some brews, and learn about how you can help end the tragedy of mountaintop removal!

Click here to watch a video:

Don\’t Do It on YouTube

Velvet Truckstop takes the time-honored instrumentation of the classic rock ‘n’ roll outfit and relentlessly engages house full’s of loyal audiences who themselves likewise feel the blues, dance the funk, and sing the truth; for people who strive to love life. “It’s the kind of rock you can lose yourself in”, comments Gus Lubin from Winston-Salem’s Yes Weekly. When musical magic occurs spontaneously on stage, the experience is shared by performer and audience alike. It is an alchemy that cannot be artificially reproduced, only happening in the ‘moment’ when the circumstances are perfectly aligned…which is most certainly quite often for this band of musical stalwarts!

Town Mountain Country Revue Tonight! Big Sam and Larry Keel tickets on-sale Tomorrow at 10am!

Fri. 12/17 – The Town Mountain Country Revue

town mountain of asheville nc 300x182 Town Mountain Country Revue Tonight! Big Sam and Larry Keel tickets on sale Tomorrow at 10am!Tickets: $5 at the door

The boys of Town Mountain (Asheville Bluegrass) bring their Country Revue show to the taproom at Pisgah Brewing.

Sat. 1/22/11 – Big Sam’s Funky Nation

$10 in advance, $15 at the door

Doors @ 7pm, Show @ 8pm

bsfnfrontpage 200x300 Town Mountain Country Revue Tonight! Big Sam and Larry Keel tickets on sale Tomorrow at 10am!In New Orleans, a city indisputably overflowing with funk, the high honor for Best Funk Group of 2008 was awarded to Big Sam’s Funky Nation at the 2009 Big Easy Music Awards. For the past few years, Big Sam’s Funky Nation has been a driving force of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Presiding over his Funky Nation is Big Sam, a big man with an impeccable urban fashion sense, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. An extremely talented group of musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them a rock sensibility, the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that’s the hallmark of big band funk. The energy level is high voltage when this band takes the stage, as Eric Podolsky of Jambase notes, “Big Sam’s Funky Nation… pulls no punches when it comes to bringing a straight raw party.” Big Sam’s Funky Nation has undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops. Also, the band was recently featured on VH-1’s Soul Cities, on Live with Regis & Kelly and on the Travel Channel’s America the Wright Way.

Thur. 2/3/11 – Larry Keel and Natural Bridge

$10 in advance, $13 at the door

Doors @ 7pm, Show @ 8pm

lkbadass 300x225 Town Mountain Country Revue Tonight! Big Sam and Larry Keel tickets on sale Tomorrow at 10am!

LARRY KEEL AND NATURAL BRIDGE is undeniably the most powerful, innovative and all-out exhilarating Acoustic Americana ensemble performing today. Period. Lead by award-winning Flatpicking Guitar genius Larry Keel, this group takes Bluegrass instrumentation into totally surprising places and spaces, from the purest traditional forms to the most astonishing experimental sonic journeys a listener can undertake. The mission is always clear: to let technical skill, honest emotion and fearlessness connect their playing and singing to their audience, to entertain and to thoroughly ENJOY the experience!

Keel himself absorbed the best lessons of his Bluegrass family upbringing, both sides deeply steeped in the rich mountain music culture and heritage of Southwest Virginia. From there, he has always integrated that solid musical grounding and natural-born TALENT with his own incomparable approach to flatpicking the guitar and to his original music. The combination is pretty irresistible, and has earned Keel the highest respect and billing among the top acoustic musicians alive, and some now gone: Tony Rice, Vassar Clements, Sam Bush, Del McCoury, John Hartford, Bill Monroe, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, to name a few. And his fierce, high-spirited energy also appeals to young rockers, jammers and alt country pickers and fans who are equally drawn to Keel’s deep rumbling voice, his earthy and imaginative song-writing, and his down-home-gritty-good-time charm. Keel regularly collaborates with JamBand and Rock giants Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, Jorma Kaukonen, David Nelson, Jim Lauderdale, members of String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon, amongst others.

Sat. 2/19/11 – Cornmeal

$10 in advance, $12 at the door  - ADVANCE TICKETS HERE

Doors @ 7pm, Show @ 8pm

l dd49635fe029e577e9be7924c6ce8ac3 300x218 Thursday (12/16)!! ~ A Growing Culture FundraiserFormed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. 10 years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire. While steeped in the tradition of the past, Cornmeal continues to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance.

In the beginning of 2010, Cornmeal released their first live album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, an album that pays tribute to the fans. For the first six years, Cornmeal performed each and every Wednesday in Chicago to small yet loyal crowds. Throughout the winters of 2007-2009, Cornmeal returned to Chicago to pay homage to that tradition. The album is for the fans as a thank you for all the years of dedication, for believing in Cornmeal, and for creating a wonderful community for them to come home to. The album was recorded live throughout the winter of 2009 at Martyrs’ in Chicago, IL. Unlike Cornmeal’s three previous albums, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams that showcase the immense talent and connectivity that have gained them so much fan appeal from coast to coast.

With the release of their debut album “In The Kitchen” (2001 Livin’ Live records), Cornmeal secured its place as one of the top bands in its genre. 2003’s “Tales from Magic Stone Mountain” (Livin’ Live records) garnered much critical attention and became a staple on College and AAA top 10 lists throughout the country.
