The President's Nun: Obamacare Scranton Scandal Explodes

In other words, Mr. Cook -- he the CEO of the hospitals who said flatly that ObamaCare was in fact "absolutely" and yet again "absolutely" playing a role in the sale of the three hospitals -- was, in the polite language of a Catholic nun, in essence being called a liar.

By Sunday, there was a third Cook statement, this one posted on the website of Mercy Health Partners. Cook statement # 3 was no longer as benign as statement # 2. The third Cook statement used some of the original language from statement #2, but its lead paragraph was now saying something else entirely. I have marked the change in bold print:

Mercy Health Partners recently announced our intention to explore the sale of our facilities in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The rationale for our initiative has been mischaracterized by certain politicized media outlets and severely distorted by some special interest groups.

In other words, Cook statement #3 has picked up a flavor of the statement from Sister Carol. Now saying without saying it that Cook's original WNEP answer about the role ObamaCare "absolutely…absolutely" played in the decision to sell the hospitals has been "severely distorted."

Curious, no? Very.

WHY IN THE WORLD would a Catholic nun be so revved up as to denounce in such strong language what Mr. Cook insisted was a fact -- that ObamaCare was "absolutely" and yet again "absolutely" playing a role in the hospital sale? Why the hair-trigger fire-breathing response. From a simple Catholic nun named Sister Carol?

And why in the world would Mr. Cook feel compelled to issue not one but two re-statements of the rationale behind the sale of the three Mercy hospitals?

One doctor in Scranton -- who was deeply disturbed by the announcement -- is certain he knows the answer. That answer? Mr. Cook was absolutely right the very first time he spoke to WNEP on camera. Hospitals, said this doctor -- frequently run a debt. "What's different? Why now?" he said in terms of the rationale for selling the Mercy hospitals. The reason is exactly as CEO Cook originally said it was. ObamaCare cuts in Medicare reimbursement have changed the rules so drastically for hospitals "you [Mercy Health Partners] are in an untenable situation," said this physician. Most hospitals have accumulating debt because of capital investments, says the doctor. But they can't deal with that debt if in fact their ability to earn money is cut off or drastically reduced over time.

Alarmingly, the doctor, with a lifetime of practice in hand, says that "hospitals close in clusters where there is decreased income in terms of relatively low Medicare reimbursement…because they are the most vulnerable." He adds that what is happening in Scranton, Nanticoke, and Tunkhannock with the Mercy hospitals "is just the beginning. It will happen everywhere because reimbursements will be reduced" under ObamaCare. Particularly, he adds, in areas where you have a high elderly population.

If the doctor is right, and he is not alone in saying this, the proposed sale of the three Mercy hospitals becomes a harbinger of what will happen nationally as a result of ObamaCare slowly tightening its government tentacles over the private health care system. Which means the sale of the three Mercy hospitals has added Scranton to what the Wall Street Journal has already called ObamaCare's "trail of destruction."

Ahhhh. But who is Sister Carol Keehan? What's the big deal here with her? Why would a statement from simple Catholic nun appear to cause so much consternation with Mercy Health Partner CEO Kevin Cook in Scranton, Pennsylvania?

LET'S GO BACK to that presidential signing of the health care reform law. There were 21 very powerful people in that little group who received signing pens from the President. As mentioned that included the Vice President, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy's widow Victoria Reggie Kennedy. And someone else.

That would be Sister Carol Keehan.

Impressive, no? The Catholic News Agency thought so, and prominently noted the story here. It also noted that Sister Carol was receiving her presidential pen from the President himself because she had been "supporting health care despite bishops' objections." The story even pictured the pen itself alongside the presidential seal on the box in which it came, with "Barack Obama" clearly visible scrawled along the side. Meaning, Sister Carol had enough clout to take on the Catholic Bishops on the President's behalf -- and win.

Does the name Bart Stupak ring a bell? The much ballyhooed pro-life Democrat Congressman from Michigan? The Catholic Congressman Bart Stupak who was said to be such a sturdy obstacle to passage of ObamaCare because it would allow abortions? In the aftermath of the ObamaCare passage, Slate came forward to note that a letter signed by "representatives" of Catholic nuns finally swayed Stupak to break his staunch anti-abortion pledge and sign on for ObamaCare with a simple promise of an executive order on abortion, executive orders being overturned by successor presidents with the rapidity of rabbits doing the breeding thing. Wait! Stupak was persuaded by Catholic nuns? Isn't Sister Carol a …nun? How about that? What a coincidence? Yes indeed, the letter in question was signed -- solo -- by Sister Carol.

The media controls the stories and without the media Obama is nothing. Will this story get legs? No. Until people start going after the media for their unbelievable liberalism and bias then nothing will change. Start holding the professional left wing media accountable and work your way down to the weakest link - the Administration.

gearjammer| 10.11.10 @ 1:04PM

Find ways to shut off their endless money supplies. If, 20 million drop their cable etc it will bankrupt them over time. Cable etc dollars do flow heavily into the networks and offending media conglomerates. Did you see the CEO of Time Warner on Cavuto ? He is chomping at the bit to have his programming 24/7 at a variety of receiving devices put upon every consumer possible. They are in particular targeting your kids and compelling you to pay. He explicitly said on Cavuto forget about pay as you go and a la carte programming . He wants one big monthly check sent to him to distribute as he sees fit. He will see to that financially weak Time mag survives. Thus, a mag alot of you have said no to you still pay for. This is all very complicated. I do not have all answers but if ever a subject deserves a true congressional investigation and oversight this is it.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 1:13PM

We cut off our cable about 10 years ago. Gives you a lot more time to do more meaningful things. Like taking on the anti-Semites at Amspec, for example. LOL.
(And before one of them tries to say I meant that toward you, gearjammer, I do NOT!)

And I think your idea is an excellent one.

God bless.

Roadrunner| 10.11.10 @ 2:21PM

I have four TV sets, but haven't had cable, satellite or even an antenna in 10-15 years. I got disgusted with it. I've cancelled my subscriptions to Time, Newsweek and U.S. News. I get my news from the internet and newspapers. 'Bye MSM!

gearjammer| 10.11.10 @ 5:15PM

We need more like you and Margie. Thanks Margie-I do not think those evil Jews own the media. But, sadly that sorta stuff is still out there.

Thanks!

"Evil Jews" ? and you Margie let that pass. Shame on you. Single Payer HealthCare is no different than public schools, fire protection, police, civil defense etc..

We already take care and pay for people who don't have the money for medical care so why is it so difficult for you to understand that national healthcare is a sensible way to go. I don'y believe that it is morally right to make a profit off of someones health.

Mustangluver| 10.17.10 @ 10:55PM

JEFF GO tell that to the the doctors who for years, the 50's the 60's and then on into the 70's EXPLOITED the medical field and kept patients beyond what they needed to be kept and you all wonder why healthcare became MANAGED? That is WHAT happened and if their country club going golf playing butts would not have been so greedy for years MAYBE we all would not have suffered the consequences. IF YOU NEVER worked in healthcare, I am sure you won't believe that but that was the catalyst for the managed care system and NOW you think OBAMA (doesn't) CARE will remedy the situation? You have not an inkling of what has really happened. AND OBAMACARE is just destroying what was partially working....I got cancelled this week by my secondary carrier for Medicare...THEY ARE STOPPING THE PROGRAM thru my insurer. Wake up and I am beyond ashamed of the Catholic Church in all of this. They didn't have the guts to stand up in the 30's and 40's and ONCE AGAIN, they don't have the guts to see this for what it is. Where is John Paul II when you need him....

Blind. That is what so-called conservatives are and "liberals (who don't believe in Liberty)", too. The problem with MM is that they are believers in the State. They, like lap-dogs, hang on its words like they are gold when they are dross - lies. Sorry, Zek. You are just the one that pushed my button. No insult intended - to you OR to blind people.

Vernon| 10.14.10 @ 10:50PM

UH. Duh. The media is largely owned by the right now. This has been the case for about 30 years. It's a proven fact and the reason why so many of you are so misinformed. Look up who owns the media today. It's not Democrats. It's the reason why Reagan's dementia while still in office was hushed, for instance.

ENOUGH ROPE| 10.11.10 @ 11:26AM

Read Dinesh D'Souza's new book, Roots of Obama's Rage. DD presents persuasive evidence that Obama adopted the anti-colonial goals of his father. Obama wrote Dreams FROM My Father--not OF my father. Obama is an anti-colonialist who hates the U.S. because he views it as a colonial power through its military and economic power which he wants to destroy. He thinks the rich, the middle class, and capitalism are domestic colonialists which must be destroyed. Many of BO's decisions that seemed hurtful to our national security and domestic freedoms now seem quite sensible for an anti-colonialist president. When he smiles I think of a smiling cobra.

Roadrunner| 10.11.10 @ 2:23PM

I ordered it from Amazon Saturday.

linda reed| 10.11.10 @ 9:19PM

I totally agree with your statement. Obama's agenda is to break America and lead her downfall. He fully plans to make us a socialist/Marxist society with more and more people dependent on the gov't. He's made great strides in accomplish this. His actions show this to be true. I don't understand why he hasn't been impeached for going against the Constitution: disregard for border security, bailing out companies, forcing legislation that the majority doesn't want. The bailout receivers were being paid back for huge donations to his campaign, but the kick is: taxpayer's money. It's like he has been given a blank check and we are allowing it. When does it stop? When does Congress balance the power? I call for checks and balances.

Ret. Marine| 10.12.10 @ 7:39AM

Whe does it stop, oh maybe when We the People are at a point of that same time period of Louie, you know the king of a certain country this retender-n-thief disrespects on a daily basis. I think it highly probable we will see something of this effect happening very soon. Our powder is still dry and for a very good reason.

Cherry| 10.14.10 @ 9:24PM

Impeachment must be initiated in the House, which is dominated by liberal majority. That is precisely why this election is SO important. Cases to investigate are piling up just waiting for a Rep. majority. In my opinion, impeachment is too good for Obama. He should be tried for treason in a military court and then....

Vernon| 10.14.10 @ 11:24PM

Let's see, the majority voted him in because they wanted change. They wanted health care reform. Unfortunately, they didn't get the reform they wanted because the Republicans kept insisting on moving away from the more progressive ideas the Democrats put forth. Got to hand it to the Republicans. They're smart enough to know if they weaken a bill enough, it will have no effect at best, or look really bad for the other side if it passes. The Dems, lead by Obama, are unfortunately too stupid to figure this tactic out and went ahead with a program that is not going to work.

But the idea that Obama wants to break America and lead her downfall is ridiculous. What he is trying to do is repair all the damage 8 years of Bush rule did. AND lead America to a more progressive 21st century model of what a Democracy can be. Is he looking to Europe for ideas. YEAHHH! Of course. For the most part, they've figured out a way to better manage a capitalist economy with reasonable controls. It's a balancing act, but it can be done. And done fairly. That's why they, lead by one of the most progressive nations among them, Germany, will emerge from this economic crisis sooner and stronger than the US. The fact that Obama wants to give the US a fighting chance in a changed world instead of digging our head in the sand and lamenting about how good things used to be, makes him a patriot, not a traitor. The fact that he is looking to other countries for ideas that will help the US cope with this changed world, makes him a heck of a lot closer to this nations founders who borrowed lots of ideas from other nations when creating ours (and also believed in a living government that could be adjusted to meet and deal with cultural, economic and political changes happening around us and from within.

CWilliams| 10.14.10 @ 7:04PM

I couldn't care less *why* he's a Marxist, the fact is that he is and he's systematically destroying America. "Understanding' is not the order of the day, stopping him is!

Vernon| 10.14.10 @ 11:01PM

Let's see. First you all call him a socialist. Then you call him a marxist. Do you know the difference. Do you know that since the 1920's the right has been engaged in scare tactics to label liberals as communists and socialists? The fact is, Democrats are neither.

Mellers| 10.14.10 @ 11:26PM

Gee Vernon... which one are you, Socialist or Marxist? In either case, you are a traitor to the US just like Hussein Obama.

Popcorn| 10.20.10 @ 8:03AM

Oh, for crying out loud...GROW UP!!! The truth is SCARY sometimes...but it's still TRUTH. The proof is in the pudding. Obama has not done one thing to enhance this country. His personal agenda IS to destroy this country. It is evident in all that he has done. Don't be so naive. Can you trust anyone who hides so much information about themselves, who lies at the drop of a hat, whose promises means nothing. If you had a personal friend that treated you the way that he has treated this country would you have any regard for that person or even associate with him??? NO!! Of coruse you wouldn't. Come out from under the ether man!! Wake up and look at the reality not the ideology. Sure you can't classify all Democrats as low as he is on the strata of American society, but their blind subscription to his leadersip renders them as lemming following him to the water's edge. How many will it take to allow the greatest country on earth to be neutered by this man. The truth IS scary!!! But it's the truth.

Gorsegrower| 10.15.10 @ 4:04AM

If Obama is a Marxist, you are Marie of Roumania.

Vernon| 10.14.10 @ 10:58PM

Come on. It's obvious that the US, along with many other world leaders use their power to dominate the world. That's how they stay powerful. And it's been done forever. The US is no exception to the rule.Yes, we've also helped a lot of people. But any tendency for one country to use it's political, military and/or economic power to dominate and control the political, social and economic conditions within another country can be seen as colonialism. The Shaw of Iran was our puppet. And so was Sadam. Our CIA under the control of George Bush the First in the 1970's brought him to power in Iraq. This is the crap that we and other nations need to stop engaging in.

Alan Brooks| 10.11.10 @ 2:00PM

What you are all lying about is that you can do better. In the midterms, yes. You proved it in '94.
But general elections? no. The demographics have changed so much, to win in a national election you have to please very wide swathes of the electorate. The upshot: you will keep running Bushes, Doles, McCains.

Absolutely guaranteed.

Alan Brooks| 10.11.10 @ 2:11PM

PS (I try not to double-post as much),

It has to be added you don't even run the best you have in a presidential election! you insulted Kemp by running silly old Dole for the top spot in '96-- comparable to if you had run Bush for POTUS in 1980, rather than the Gipper.

And you think anyone has to respect the GOP anymore??

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 2:28PM

Alan,

You sound like you care. Will you vote for the conservative Republicans in the primaries then, sir?

Alan Brooks| 10.11.10 @ 5:09PM

No, because since the Cold War ended the GOP has been going nowhere as far as the Executive Branch is concerned. I'll vote Democratic in November, as the more pressure that is put on the GOP, the more likely it is they wont mess it up.
The last thing the GOP did was help dissolve the Soviet Union in '91.
19 years!

john| 10.11.10 @ 5:52PM

I see Al "The Paid For Troll" Brooks is making his rounds again. Of course you don't double post Troll, you can't get to all the conservative blogs in time before it's time to punch out. Cute trick trying to sound quasiintelligent. None of us believe you or the habitual and pathological liars you're in bed with. Remind me to save a little cockroach killer for you Troll after we fumigate Congress on Nov. 2nd!

BackToBasics| 10.11.10 @ 7:05PM

Margie and Alan are one and the same person.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:55PM

Now THAT is funny!

BackToBasics| 10.11.10 @ 10:34PM

Glad to make you laugh but you've tipped your hand(s) a couple times. But I don't hold it against you. I don't want to ruin all your fun. Though you seem to come across as 2 different people, you both come across as cynical of Christianity. Margie is a caricature of a "yahoo Christian" wheareas Alan is just plain cynical. But neither is flattering of a sincerely lived Christian life to say the least.

I've also been pretty open about my beliefs here although I've not posted for too long. On the surface I may also seem like a cynical Christian when I say I was not impressed with hearing about Bush's prayer life but would have been more impressed if he could quote the Bible more to back up his beliefs; such as his unbiblical stand on open borders. I also have said I believe Huckabee is a probable secret society member )and Bush too-old news I know) and that I would not vote for him. I've mentioned how much of the church leadership is compromised by wolves in sheep's clothing. I've said other things too. But although I am cynical when it comes to many leaders, I still find most of the regular people in the church to try to be sincere. I've also found that Jesus is faithful even when leaders or even myself in my weaker moments are not. There ends my cycnicism.

Margie and Alan seem to carry their cynicism all the way and she tipped her hand to me when she got riled up when I said Jesus was not pushy a few weeks back when I answered a post Alan had written.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 11:50PM

Uh, sorry to burst your bubble there B to B but I'm not Alan! You said you don't post here that much and if you did you'd know that people's post run over each other when posting. Replies come out in the wrong spots when there is a lot of activity and a post that was supposed to be a reply to someone else looks like it went to another person.

But I think I remember your comment about Jesus not being pushy and if I remember correctly I posted a verse showing how He spoke back to the Jews who refused to believe in Him even though He did miracles right before their very eyes. Not sure how that would be construed as cynical though or what it has to do with Alan Brooks. LOL.

As to how I respond to Alan's posts.. I see Alan as someone who is blatantly straight forward with how he feels and thinks. I'm like that as well, but I also think he secretly hopes for a return to the right kind of government in this country. I just want to appeal to that part of him that's still left inside. Now, you may not understand that, but there you have it.

Also~ sometimes people respond to other people's posts when they haven't been asked to. That's also the way it is around here.

As to your judgment of me as a Christian well I don't live to please man. Sorry, but you are just plain wrong.

God bless.

Polly A| 10.14.10 @ 5:22PM

LOL "Huckabee is probably a secret scociety member" Really?? What nonsense. If he was, he would have a lot more financial backing.
Huckabee is as honest and open as the day is long. He says exactly what he is thinking which is sometimes a good thing, sometimes not.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:54PM

Oh man. I just am saddened when I hear this way of thinking. And lots of people around here say the same thing. But I honestly just can't relate to it. or understand it.

Seriously~ if you are in a war and need to win and you have a bad General, do you not replace him? You guys want to throw him out and lose for "punishment's" sake! But then you're punishing yourselves. And those of us who want to win the battle along with you!

I know you don't see it that way but I really believe it's true. Alan you seem to be angry at the situation and by some of your posts I think you really do care. I exhort you to come back to the fight again. God knows we could use you.

Kim Harrison| 10.11.10 @ 9:43PM

Why not vote third party candidates?

If we all stopped voting for (the lesser of two) evil, the good one can win.

Willey| 10.11.10 @ 10:48PM

Political suicide. Third parties always mean democrats are elected. No thanks.

We have to clean up the repub party.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 11:55PM

Willey's absolutely right. NO third parties as they only help the Democrats to win. Look what happened with Perot. We got Clinton twice and we're about to get Obummer twice if the voting public doesn't all get out and vote for every Republican that they can. And when the weak ones who get elected backslide, we inundate them with faxes, e mails, phone calls and a knock on their door when we're in town! Nothing more impressive than a room full of constituents who all want to tell you why the votes you cast last week were wrong, and why you better not do it again.

The Godfather| 10.14.10 @ 9:33PM

The largest "third" party that wins every time are the independents with 40% of the voters. The Republican party is dead and just needs to be cremated. The "second" party now is the Conservative Party, yes, a real thing. Did you know that?

Rev. Jesse Jackson| 10.11.10 @ 6:09PM

Alan Brooks,
I really don't mean to be offensive, but I think most of what you say or believe is bullshit. HOWEVER, I agree 100 % with you on your point that the Republicans usually don't run their best candidate. Might I add that in my opinion the Democrats don't either. Ya'll had better people than Mondale, or Carter, or Dukakis, or Clinton or B. Hussein Obama. It seems that the best people don't run. Why is that? Are they gutless? Or maybe they don't want to put their family or themselves through the scrutiny (too many skeletons in the closet?). One thing you have to admit, Alan, and if you don't admit it, you will lose all credibility. There isn't as much scrutiny from the media for the Democratic candidate. They gave Obama a pass (they dropped the Rev. Wright story, etc.), and handed him the White House. Everyone knows now that if it hadn't been for the lamestream media, Obama wouldn't be in the White House. Personally, I'm holding my breath as far as the Republican candidate goes. Hopefully he won't be another loser like McCain. Maybe the governor of Indiana will go for the prize. I've heard that he has straightened out that state. I could be wrong.

Curmudgeonly Liberal| 10.12.10 @ 9:01AM

The Republicans ran McCain and Palin because they didn't want to win. They knew there was no chance of that pair making it to the White House. It's the whole back and forth of our politics through the years that keeps the populace stirred up with the blame game. The differences between the two parties are only on the surface. Deep down it's all about keeping the money in the "right" hands. It's been the same since the beginning and will continue as long as there is a United States of America as we know it. In spite of itself, our flawed system is still the best thing going.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 3:36PM

"The Republicans ran McCain and Palin because they didn't want to win." Heh. Nice tired worn out old try.

The "Republicans" in this case are the Ruling Class Republicans. The Establishment RINO's, NOT we individual conservative Republicans. We didn't "run McCain".

That and the FACT that there were what is called OPEN (stinking) PRIMARIES in some states allowing the scumbag Democrats (oooooh I said a bad word, quick where are the holier-than-thou's today?) allowing them to vote in our Primaries.

AND a third reason is that NOT ENOUGH STUPID COMPLAINERS like some of the losers who post here got out and voted in the primaries for the conservative candidate, and Thompson pulled out.

SO.... if ALL of us actually get out and vote in the upcoming elections and the Primaries in 2012 instead of complaining about how "There's no difference in the 2 parties" (well no kidding that's because you don't vote and so we get the government we deserve!) so get out and VOTE!!

Oh how mean I just was, according to the Catholic "faith" I must now go to confession and tell the "Father" how CRU-EL I just was. How E-VIL! LOL.

John| 10.12.10 @ 5:51PM

Seems straight forward and right on target. Nothing evil about the truth.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 9:23PM

Thank you, John.

You have a narrow view of history. President Bush pushed a religious agenda, putting political hacks in government agencies where they tried to dictate what a scientist could publish. He stopped all US aid to third world countries on birth control. He stopped stem cell research. And he lied about WMD in Iraq, initiating an unnecessary war and distracting us from the real enemy, Al Qaeda. Bush inherited a budget surplus and created a huge addition to the deficit. H was a disaster as President, the American people knew that and voted for change.

And we have gotten change, in addition to solid leadership in saving the country from a depression due to Bush financial incompetence. We now have universal health care, which will only get better as we learn how it works and tweak the details.

Alan: This is not about whom the GOP runs for President, and it's not about "demographics". No, this is about deceit, corruption, intimidation and flat out lies by a White House and a political party (Democrats) that is willing to say and do anything, no matter what the consequences are to the American People, to pass it's agenda.

While I am surprised at the depth and complexity of this article, having been on the "front lines" of the Health Care Debate as a Tea Party Patriot, I am not surprised of it's occurrence . I was there on March 22, 2010 in Washington, D.C. when the votes were cast and I know how Bart Stupek sold his soul just for the favor of a non-caring, over-bearing, win-at-all-costs man named Barack Hussein Obama!

Alan Brooks| 10.12.10 @ 12:58AM

To go back to the turning point would be to examine Gingrich's efforts in 1995- '6.
After '96 the Contract With America fizzled.
Now we are supposed to go through that sort of nonstarter 'Revolution' yet again?: grandiose promises which peter out?

Ron Chapman| 10.12.10 @ 11:39AM

The reason some of those you don't like end up running is because of your beloved media and the undue influence they have had with negative results for the American people.

If the upcoming election maintains a Democratic majority in congress you can kiss off this country. The great depression will be nothing compared to what will happen to our country and its people.

But, that says nothing about the silence main stream media observed concerning Barack Obama. They ignored any and all negative press concerning this man.

They made certain that Mitch Romney, as an example, was lambasted because of his religion! Are you old enough to remember JFK running for election and the commotion over his religion?

You liberals have on a set of blinders like a mule in a cornfield and can see nothing but welfare for those who do not work but could.

I do not know of one Democrat in congress that has ever worked for a living in business or run a company. All I know of are lawyers, political organizers, etc.

I have already seen the result that Obamacare is having on our seniors on Medicare. Pay doctors less, make seniors pay more! And, I would be willing to debate you on any of these subjects, anytime!

A LOT of things you can be sure are still hidden that Obama mama is into and has done illegally!!h I wish someone had the guts to begin proceedings to have him impeached!!! His approval rate is only about 35%, so what in the name of heaven are we waiting for??!

EddieW| 10.12.10 @ 4:24PM

Why does he have an approval rate of even 35%? These are people who rely on the alphabet news media, therefore do not get the truth, and really have no clue what Obummer is doing, or attempting to do to this country!! Guess one might call them ignorant!!!

EddieW| 10.12.10 @ 4:22PM

Obummer, the liar in Chief of course, thenthe rest have to follow along...look at the alphabet news media for example...when is the last time they gave us the real news...instead of pap and entertainment??? At least for now...it looks like liars rule!!

J. Ricardo Planas| 10.14.10 @ 8:31PM

I gather from the article that the sale of the 3 hospitals were unintended. This means that it was not foreseen or desired by the Obama Administration. Hence, what is the larger issue? I cannot see one other than a fragile nun intimidating a CEO. How so? What leverage did she have?
The entire article could have been limited to one third its length had you written it in a straightforward fashion instead of using a fear-driven, conspiratorial style of writing. Such style sends a secondary message that something drastic is going on. If so, what is it, exactly? I think you already had said it: the healtcare legislation has unintended economic consequences. This should have been the punch line that I think uncritical readers might have missed. But then, there are unintended consequences in a market system, no matter best intentions or even evil ones.

BrianC| 10.15.10 @ 3:33PM

This has got to be the stupidest attempt ever to label something relatively boring as a scandal. Please don't waste my time over four clickovers with doom talk about some dude who regretted being honest about his politics. This only thing this article is going to ignite is a massive group nap.

The Democrat always supports the status quo of Big Labor Big Government and Urban Ghetto Life also known as slavery-to-the-state. In the United States of America the generic Democrat party is the party of state-enforced penury/slavery. The Democrat always says how much he "cares for the people" but what he really cares about is power and living large. More and more people are now discovering what it means to be a slave on Ole Massah's Citation Plantation. Smug Big Labor Big Government Democrats love devising new ways to impose slavery-to-the-state enforced by confiscatory BLBG bureaucrats. And you think the Democrat cares about you? Don't be a chump.

Spot on. Alinsky taught to appear to be for the poor and downtroden, but use them for political gain. It's all about power. His perspective is that having power is inherently good, no matter the consequences. Corruption is acceptable in the obtaining of power. No scrupples allowed!

Shame on that nun and her so-called "social justice" approach. I think she needs a refresher course on the sin of superbia (pride). She likes her fast crowd and power. A little humility is needed now. Rome needs to send her somewhere, like India or Haiti, for a sabbatical.

uncle curmudgeon| 10.11.10 @ 8:10AM

One little quibble here, Drudge: "social justice' creeps are in their element in places like Haiti. The more people suffer the better the prospects for the huckster. Oh! The poster-children! Keep her where she is, standing in the shadows of the blood-suckers, ever-ready to do their dirty work. The creepy minority cannot stand the light of day. They cannot win a fair fight. FTM| 10.11.10 @ 8:31AM

Lots and lots and lots of churches, not just part of the Roman Catholic Church have gladly and willingly substituted secular humanism, situational ethics and social justice for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Word to the wise, "Great Falling Away."

Jeremiah| 10.11.10 @ 10:20AM

There is a reason the Vatican has sent investigating teams in to visist several orders of nuns in America. Nuns are theologically supposed to be brides of Christ. Those that refuse to wear a bridal garment I regard with suspicion, at best. They are too often wolves trying to destroy the Catholic faith of those they encounter. And these wolves are easily recognized - they call themselves sheep but don't even bother to wear sheeps clothing. Kevin Cook could undoubtedly tell you how painful their fangs are.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 12:27PM

Nowhere in the Bible does God require Christian women to wear bridal garments, and that is false man made doctrine.

And ALL Christians are considered the Bride of Christ, not just Catholics. Bible believing Christians, that is.

Patrick| 10.11.10 @ 3:24PM

Euphemisms aside, the practice of consecrated virgins, anchorites, nuns, and sisters may dismissed as rubbish in your tradition, it certainly is not "un-biblical".

I suggest you reread 1 Cor. 7:34. A nun, or a sister, or any consecrated virgin for that matter, practices a laudable and voluntary practice.

This is not done to "earn heaven", but rather to wholly attend to the things of God for their own sake.

Of course, there are women who have been distracted by the Social Gospel, to the point of forgetting _why_ we are to love our neighbor. This is an error and idolatry, whether one professes Christ by Catholic or Protestant allegiance.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 3:39PM

Uh, sorry. The Catholic church forbids men and women to Marry.

it is wrong:

"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer." 1 Tim. 4:1-5.

Alan Brooks| 10.11.10 @ 5:13PM

Agreed, excepting for allergens:
the Bible doesn't tell you EVERYTHING;
it doesn't tell you how to tie shoelaces or brush your teeth.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:46PM

LOL. That's because they weren't invented yet. Toothbrushes and shoe laces, that is. Heh, the I- phone isn't in there either.

But seriously though. The Bible is the guidebook, but His Spirit is what changes our hearts and then keeps us on the straight and narrow.

"A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will take out of your flesh the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Ez. 36:26.

And that my dear friend, is even greater than a miracle. We all have hard hearts before coming to Christ. He gives us new ones, out of His mercy and love so that we're able to follow Him.

Rev. Jesse Jackson| 10.11.10 @ 6:16PM

Alan, no, the Bible doesn't tell us everything, but it tells us that Jesus died for us and that He is the only way to heaven. It also says, "And whosever was not found written in the Lamb's book of life will be cat into the lake of fire." Rev. 20:15 Is your name in the book, Alan? Quit being cute. Wise up.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 6:35PM

Why Jesse, I'm surprised that you're preaching the gospel. When did this great and welcome change come about?

Rev. Jesse Jackson| 10.11.10 @ 10:09PM

Dear Margie,
Several years ago Rush Limbaugh suggested that I had sold my soul to the Democratic party. After meditating a bit on that, I decided that he was right. I then repented of my adulteries, my hatred for the Jews, my hypocrisy, and for being a racial ambulance chaser (like my buddy Al Sharpton). I got tired of playing the race card and repented for being a racist pig. Unfortunately, it is being rumored that my son is following in my footsteps and has been playing with a slut. Now I just want to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and love white people, Larry Elder and Clarence Thomas. I will never call a conservative who happens to be black (if I can find one - they're so rare these days) an Uncle Tom, or boot-licking Tom, etc. I repent!!! I hope and pray that the Republicans win big in November.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 11:58PM

Woohoo! Awesome Jesse! You ride 'em, cowboy! :^)

Kenny| 10.12.10 @ 7:58AM

gingadecorgi| 10.11.10 @ 10:50AM

Yes! Send Sister Carol to Haiti. She has been a thorn in the side of "the Bishops." Sadly, some bishops have lost their you-know-whats and won't stand up to her. Raymond Arroyo, EWTN, interviewed this Nun during the HC debate. She lied and lied on air. Send her to Haiti post haste.

Patrick| 10.11.10 @ 3:37PM

Why is it you hate Haiti so much that you would inflict these people with her? Have they not enough problems?

Also, she is a sister, of a religious community. She is administratively answerable to her religious superiors, not to the bishop or even the Pope. This is why Mother Angelica couldn't be sent off to Alaska for daring to start up EWTN.

Even so, the heyday of the usurpation of the Church by the Far Left is slowly coming to an end. They will be ever the more shrill for their retreat, yet the dirt takes us all.

In the meantime, do not be scandalized, but rather keep your eyes on Christ. Momento Mori.

RCharles| 10.14.10 @ 8:34PM

You apparently can't separate reality from the fiction you live. Yes, some nuns came out in favor of Health Care in opposition to the bishops, who long for the days when they could tie a non-believer to a stake and burn him to death.

It was the catholics, the catholic population, that ignored the bishops and elected President Barack Obama. The bishops tried to dictate how to vote, they held a full court press, "eternal damnation", etc., but most catholics read and studied and voted their beliefs.

the bishops can teach but the ADULTS must decide.

RCharles| 10.14.10 @ 8:37PM

The solution is simple, but nobody has the courage to do it.

Her local bishop, or the Pope, should excommunicate everybody like her.

Enough of this splitting hairs about "should Nancy Pelosi who advocates for abortions be allowed to receive communion."

The Catholic church is run by wimps, cowards, and lefties. Speaking as a Catholic who had to endure a leftie rant from the pulpit (I, apparently, am no better than a murderer of gay people because I don't openly embrace their lifestyle), I have had ENOUGH.

Just one thing, as I read the first page....

The premium increases, the market disruptions, the corporate-wide dropped coverage: these were all *intended* consequences.

The entire purpose of that monstrosity was to create chaos in the insurance market, screw insurance companies to the wall and force them to do exactly what they've done, and ultimately drive them out of business altogether so the Great Benevolent Hand of the Imperial Federal Government can swoop in and declare "well, we gave them a shot at playing fair, but they still won't.." and seize control of the entire medical system, thus destroying it and depriving you of control over your own life, liberty and property.

Unintended consequences, indeed.

I agree with you, Bro.John. This was his intention all along. We all knew it before it was ever passed. He will end capitalism in anyway he can. His desire to rule a socialist country is very transparent. How he got so much support for this is beyond me. We must have a large majority of Congresspeople who are ignorant. Would you sign a piece of legislation w/o reading it or at least knowing what was in it?

Sandy| 10.11.10 @ 7:39AM

Thank you for this great article Mr. Lord. I truly hope that it does grow legs, and, is spread across the nation. Obama, and his fellow travelers must do all they can to try to keep a lid on all of the destruction that is happening because of Ocare. The call for repealing the law is growing, and winning out over their insistence that we just take it and shut up.

As to Sister Carol, she apparently is a part of the Counterfeit Catholics. There's that name again, George Soros funded a 527 called Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. One of the 2 co-founders is Democrat Rep. Tom Perriello, VA-05, who also claims to be a Catholic. His only known source of income, prior to being elected as a Rep in 08, was funds received from Soros funded 527's, according to his tax returns.

Soros and Perriello knew that they had to break through the anti-abortion voting block. They have spread the message that it is OK to vote for Democrats, even though they approve of abortions, because they make up for that with their work on Amnesty and open borders, and, they re-distribute wealth from the rich to the poor. Unfortunately, the push for social justice, in taking from the rich and giving to the poor, goes all the way up to the Catholic Pope. The pope also believes that the US is responsible to feed the world's poor, even though the trillions of dollars given to third world countries never turns into food for the poor. Sister Carol is surely a Counterfeit Catholic.

Here are a ton of articles on "Obama's Counterfeit Catholics-

And how about Replacement Theology which states that the "Church" has replaced Israel, and thus there is no need for Israel. They "believe" that Israel is null and void.

The anti-Semites like Tim* hide in this perverted doctrine. He also says the Pope believes this doctrine.

Jeff| 10.11.10 @ 3:48PM

Margie,
For the love of God, stop it with the anti-Catholicism! Your zeal would be admirable if it were pointed in another direction. Choosing this forum for your attacks is inappropriate. Go, with an open mind, and visit here: www.realcatholictv.com for complete and truthful explanation of the Catholic faith.
Peace be to you.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 4:39PM

Jeff who? A Troll, I assume since you posted not your last name so I have no other choice. LOL.

My post belongs in this forum as it has to do with exposing one vile creature and what he believes as a Catholic and that he claims the Pope believes. I have read the Pope's words and he indeed does believe in Secessionism, which is anti-Semitic. Do you not care about that? No, you'd rather just shut me up, like Tim* tries to do, and like the Catholic church tries to do with those it abuses!

Now let's see here. How about dealing with what I said? No, instead you respond with false accusations. Do you not care that this is a fact? (Replacement Theology).
Or are you just another protector of Catholics who cloak themselves with the Religion and try to destroy Christians who speak truth to their lies.

And since when is this "forum" strictly for pro-Catholic comments only? No protestations to the vile creatures spewing their filth, but to me instead?

Speaks volumes, Jeff.

If they want to block truthful comments about what some Catholics blatantly believe such as Replacement Theology, why don't they start moderating or put up a sign that says, "All Bible believing Christians Enter Not Here!"

My mind is open to the truth that is in the Bible. I reject all else. Too bad you don't.

Oh and p.s.~ How come you say it isn't appropriate in this forum when the article is discussing the very subject?

Melvin| 10.11.10 @ 7:51AM

Sister Carol might masquerade and fool others that she is a nun, but she has long sold her faith for the power of political evil.
This woman is a complete and utter disgrace to the Catholic Faith. What does she have on the Bishops, that would allow this woman and her Progressive Nunnery to cause so much damage against the Catholic Faith?
Sister Carol needs and should be cast from the Catholic Church, for this woman is no nun, but pure evil against the sanctity of life.
I'm getting real sick and tired of religious sell-outs as of late.

MikeBee| 10.11.10 @ 9:38AM

Melvin,

You're right. The problem is that many of the bishops in the U.S. are also sold out to political power. Marxism reigns in many areas of the Catholic Church, as well, led by "feel-good" far leftist types. If they would only study Moral Theology, they would see that they are responsible for guiding a church to become devoid of virtue. Full disclosure: I'm Catholic.

gingadecorgi| 10.11.10 @ 10:55AM

I saw Archbishop Timothy Dolan, on EWTN, The World Over. He must have voted for 0bama. He was hoping for change with 0bama but thus far has been disappointed. Fr. Dolan is a smart man. But obviously ignorant in trusting 0bama. I wonder how many more bishops voted for 0bama.

MikeBee| 10.11.10 @ 11:39AM

gingadecorgi,
I studied in a Catholic seminary for many years, but left before becoming ordained. Most of the clergy in the U.S. Catholic Church remain ignorant of political issues by choice. I only knew of one priest who chose to follow political issues; he was conservative, and considered an anomaly among his peers.

Melvin| 10.11.10 @ 11:15AM

My wife, summed it up perfectly with her comment. She is a Roman Catholic, and she as acknowledged the failures of the Catholic Church. Being from the Philippines, she rolls her eyes when a discussion turns to US Catholics and more so the US Catholic Church.
The statement that my wife made has stuck with me through the years. "It is not the Catholic faith and my faith that is failing Catholics all over the world, but it is the Catholic Church that is failing the Catholic Faithful."

Nunya| 10.11.10 @ 12:44PM

She is absolutely correct.... unfortunately.

Roy| 10.11.10 @ 1:58PM

Nate W.| 10.11.10 @ 12:10PM

I think Jeffrey Lord's spot-on comment about Sister Carol can shed light as to her motivations; " [she has] a very, very high-powered set of very elite friends." Not even nuns are immune from the heady effect of that strong drink known as elitism.

The Republicans are imperfect but so are we all. Got to vote for the best people though. And then pray for God's mercy on our nation. I do, in fear.
Love you too.

Kim Harrison| 10.11.10 @ 10:24PM

If the best candidate is not a D or an R the only thing you do is to confirm to them that they can offer you any piece of crap they want and you will vote for it.

If you stop voting for (the lesser of two) evil, then the good one can win.
Write in a better candidates name.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 12:00AM

That's the worst thing you could do and it'll insure Obama II. But then, I think you know that already.

joli| 10.11.10 @ 6:56PM

Margie, you win no one to Christ with your argumentative spirit. Eph 4:2 "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Eph 4:15 "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." You have a problem with Catholics and anti-Semites--fine. State your case, but don't let it disintegrate into these stick fights. Ghandi said that the greatest argument against Christ is Christians. You're making his case.

For the record, I'm neither a Catholic nor an anti-Semite. My concern is not with their arguments, but that your responses, as a self-professed Bible-believing Christian, sully the name of Christ.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 7:32PM

Bravo, joli, but it's going to take more than your rational comment to subdue Margie's anti-Catholic bigotry.

Tear gas, pepper spray or a taser gun might do the job.

Intelligent Design| 10.11.10 @ 8:38AM

The general public isn't going to get excited about this. It's too involved, too many words to read. Like getting a jury to understand a complicated bank fraud case.

wes| 10.11.10 @ 9:24AM

I understand your comments, but believe you are mistaken. The center-right electorate is waking up and insisting on educating themselves prior to voting. A non activist right wing base has become increasingly more activistically oriented. I believe that Obama and his crowd have forced a change in the sleepy electorate that they did not foresee. Or at least, did not foresee in it's scope and size.

Franklin| 10.11.10 @ 11:40AM

ID is too right (correct). How many O voters could tell you what's going on in politics today? If you canvased a wide portion of them, how many could tell you about Climategate or any other involved issue? That's why Obama is yelling, "Don't make me look bad." at the top of his lungs. This Obamacare issue will only preach to the choir - those of us who care. Most of the others will only pay attention if it is broken down into sound bites; small 5th grade words,

Nunya| 10.11.10 @ 12:48PM

Franklin,

How many voters overall can tell you what's really happening? Frankly, I don't know, but from the people I speak to I'd bet that 60% of the folks out there don't have a clue, they just vote for the same party--or, they see some slick marketing for a political candidate (ala Obozo), and they vote for them. Those of us that do have a clue to the truth are almost certainly a minority.

Denise| 10.11.10 @ 2:35PM

Franklin, I wrote into the website the Rep. set up, America speaks out (?) (not quite sure of name right now). Anyways, that's exactly what I stated in my ideas to them. The Repubs., or Tea Party, needs to simply exlain what is wrong with Dems ideas (there's 7,000 to choose from). Take one big controversy and simply say this is what Dems did and this is how Reps. will fix it. Clean, direct and simple. And I am not putting those people down. I like my information clean, direct and simple. Get the confusion out of the voter's mind. I just hope the Republicans don't screw this up or else I think America is gone as we know it.

Obamacare is the crowning glory of the Progressive Movements 1935 beginning Universal Healthcare. The author of OldAgeInsurance,SSA,told my MD Class'53 that they would "own you". Slavery is the correct name for Social Justice.

Stan Redmond| 10.11.10 @ 9:44AM

Ain't that the truth... Indeed we are all forced in to Obamacare (unless you're ap olitically powerful friend of OBama and get a "waiver" or a member of congress and you exempt yourself).
The true slavery will be saved for the doctors. Nurses will be taken care of by the SEIU. But doctors... Who in their right mind would become a doctor now?

TennesseeVolunteer| 10.11.10 @ 8:41AM

The environmentalist and social justice advocacy of Catholic nuns is well known. These libs in nuns clothing now see their roles as advocates for liberalism instead of serving in the classroom, the hospital ward or the soup line.
Catholic nuns have lost their moral code and are at odds with persnal freedom or indidual pursuit of freedom.

gingadecorgi| 10.11.10 @ 1:07PM

I would guess that nuns like sister Carol do not make a majority. Orders that are faithful to church teachings and wear the habit are bulging at the seams. I was educated by Dominicans. That particular order runs parallel with sister Carol. So that order of Dominicans is dead. No young women are taking the veil. Now for the Catholic hospitals. We have a large hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes, managed by the Franciscans, being built in Lafayette LA. I wonder if it will make it. Who knows. The Catholic health care system will have to close down or that damnable HC bill will have to be rescinded. The latter I hope!

Clinton nee Publius| 10.11.10 @ 8:43AM

Where is the Catholic church? This nun should be excommunicated - she has given up everything sacred to the Catholic faith in favor of pursuing the bankrupt social-justice agenda of liberal tyranny. All of it is for the purposes of extending personal power and I can't understand why the Pope - supposedly a religious zealot who believes in spreading the Gospel of Christ - is allowing this to continue.

How many commandments does she break before it is important enough to be meaningful?

Two comments. Anyone who has worked in a large corporate organization knows that the sale of significant assets involves detailed analysis and review at the highest level of the company. All of that analysis would be documented, and the CEO and his CFO would be intimately involved. Mr. Cook knows exactly what he was talking about in statement #1, and there is certainly documentation to support his comments. A good investigative reporter could get that analysis.

Point two. Isn't it time the public learned exactly who wrote each and every provision of ObamaCare? It is a travesty that elected representatives and senators passed a bill they neither read nor understood. The special interests who influenced those votes need to be disclosed. Perhaps this is something to be added to Mr. Lord's to-do list.

Bob K.| 10.11.10 @ 9:09AM

I LIVE HERE FOLKS!

AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT NONE, EXACTLY NONE, OF THIS STUFF HAS BEEN DISCUSSED BY THE MEDIA. NOT BY THE 2 NEWSPAPERS (Shamrock Communications out of Scranton and The Wilkes Barre Publishing Company out of Wilkes Barre) AND NOT BY TELEVISION AND NOT BY PUBLIC RADIO OR TELEVISION.

AND THIS AREA IS VERY HEAVILY CATHOLIC, ESPECIALLY IN THE URBAN, DENSELY POPULATED AREAS.

The Catholic Church in this area has been undergoing a sea change.

Many Catholic Schools and Parishes in this Diocese, which has an aging population, were closed down and combined with others in the past two years because of funding difficulties. The new Bishop who was charged by the Archbishop of Philadelphia to do this reorganization
eventually took early retirement because of the bad press he received from the newspapers and local television. (Which was then whipped along by the local radio talk show hosts.) The Archbishop then named a local Monsignor as the new Bishop and (apparently) instructed him to continue this reorganization because it is still going on. Criticism has quieted down somewhat.

The Four Catholic Colleges in the area have been free of these financial strictures and over the years have not been active at all in helping to
address the financial problems of the Diocese. Indeed, most of their students come from out of the area. They contribute a bit to the local economy and greatly to the Colleges economies which have high tuitions, high salaries and high opinions of themselves. At least one of them, Misericordia, is really big on "Diversity" and it's President has a regular column in one of the local Newspapers.

I believe that last year the University of Scranton (Jesuit) had all of 42 graduates who could have been considered local.

JP| 10.11.10 @ 12:08PM

"..The Archbishop then named a local Monsignor as the new Bishop and (apparently) instructed him to continue this reorganization because it is still going on. Criticism has quieted down somewhat."

Bishops cannot ordain priests to be bishops. Only the Pope can do this. Otherwise, your comments are right on. Pennsylvania is a rather odd state as far as Catholicism goes. It has Catholics who adhere to orthodox Catholicism, as well as hetrodox Catholics. The nun in question here is not unusual. She represents an aging and withering tradition of hetrodoxy. Most of these orders are litterally dieing out. However, there are several newer orders that are orthodox and have waiting lists made up of potential novices.

It is ironic that the most dynamic and growing group of Catholics are those under 40.

Darragh| 10.11.10 @ 12:21PM

I so agree. It's heartening to see the younger generation. The Vatican is right to investigate these orders. I used to be involved with a New England retreat center run by the few nuns left. I finally left because they offered not one Catholic course or workshop. It was all New Age, including topics which were anti Christian. To top it off, the "Program Director" who was paid, was Protestant, actively anti- Catholic and condemned the RC bishop because of his stance on gay marriage. A lot of nuns of that age are no longer committed to the Church and it is reflected in what they sponsor or are involved in.

Bob K.| 10.11.10 @ 1:08PM

JP,
Thank you for the clarification. I am not Catholic but have watched this dispute closely. I would assume that the Pope would also closely consider the recommendations of the Archbishop in
these ordinations.

AS A FURTHER NOTE:

THE MORNING TALK SHOE HOST ON WILK DISCUSSED THIS PARTICULAR ARTICLE BY MR. LORD AT SOME LENGTH ON HER TALK SHOW THIS MORNING. I COULD NOT HEAR THE ENTIRE SHOW BECAUSE OF OTHER BUSINESS BUT IT WAS CLEAR THAT SHE WAS COMPLETELY IN AGREEMENT WITH IT AND DISTURBED BY THE NUN'S INVOLVEMENT AS A LOBBYIST FOR HEALTH ARE REFORM!

Scranton 101| 10.11.10 @ 9:19AM

Bob K. hit the nail on the head. The Shamrock publications unfortunately have not and will not cover the Obamacare aspect of the hospital story because of their ideological slant. It's a real shame as they could really do an expose if they wanted to.

How ironic it is that we will need the national media and the Jeffrey Lords of the world to cover a local issue like this.

Redstateboy| 10.11.10 @ 9:24AM

Bingo. In the Mocha Messiah's brave new world, having a company that makes money through its own efforts is not the true path to riches. Sucking up to the ruling class is all that is necessary, and a hospital is the perfect front going forward for laundering redistributed taxpayer funds.

And so this minion dutifully fulfills his assigned task of changing the truth of the quotes and statements, secure in his belief that a somnambulent public of proles, more concerned with the Eagles and the Phillies, won't notice or won't be offended. The only difference between this '2010 is 1984' scenario, and the Orwellian world we are rocketing toward, is that the State Police organ has not been developed which would have turned all of the people who new the real truth into 'UNPERSONS'....at least it hasn't been developed yet.

I thank God that some people still have the memory, the attention span, and the courage to stand up and say, "Hey, wait a minute! That's not what you said 6 months ago! That is NOT RIGHT!" Christians believe the Bible. Catholics believe the Pope.

Christians proclaims God's words as written in the Bible. Catholics create their own stuff.

If you want to be a Christian, which means "follower of Christ", then you must believe His words, and beware of false doctrines. Check them against what the Bible says, and denounce them if they do not agree with what He says there.

Nunya| 10.11.10 @ 1:04PM

Margie, as a Christian I feel the need to chasten you a bit on your comments. I have known many good Catholics in my life, and while there is a lot of (what I consider false) things that the church added to the religion, most true Catholics still believe the Bible and in Christ. Unfortunately they are taught that they themselves are "unable to understand it completely", so it needs to be interpreted by a priest--or other church official. That leads to them typically not reading the Bible, even though most Catholics that I have known in the past typically have a giant copy sitting in their living room. It's not that they "create their own stuff", but the church itself has misinterpreted many passages.

Remember that Martin Luther was a priest before he became the "Great Reformer", and it was he who originally encouraged everyone to read the Bible for themselves. To those who do, its meaning is clearly evident.

c| 10.11.10 @ 1:21PM

did not intend to start a battle between catholics and "christians." they are the same on the essential points. let's keep our focus on the true adversary: obama and his gang/followers.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 1:30PM

It's ok, c. We can handle it. Sometimes there are real Christians and we can speak to each other "normally" and without hatred.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 1:28PM

Hello Nunya,

Your comments are welcomed and received cheerfully. Nice to come across a friendly and honest spirit in your chastening. :^)

As I was writing it I knew there would be this response but generally speaking what I said is true and as you noted, this is what they're taught. I could have, or perhaps should have put it like this:

Catholicism teaches Catholics to believe the Pope. The Bible teaches us to believe Jesus, and His words are in the Bible. The Bible ought to be our guide, and not any earthly man, if his words do not match up with what the Bible says.

I have no quibbles with individual Catholics, except when they falsely accuse me of being heretical for speaking the truth. Which I will do till my dying day.

I was born into a Catholic family (not really a practicing one though). I went through the first communion, confirmation, etc. I even asked God for His Holy Spirit during confirmation. And when I was about 20 yrs. old I met some Bible believing Christians, the kind who actually carry their Bibles with them always and revere it and live by it.

In studying it I learned that what is written in the Bible did not match up with what the Catholic Religion teaches. I gave my life to Christ and I honor His words more so I rejected the doctrines of Catholicism.

"He who is of God hears the words of God.." Jn. 8:47.

Roy| 10.11.10 @ 2:12PM

That's a pretty typical story and I always would rather people were devout evangelicals than "Catholics" who check a box but are in practice agnostics.

Don't, erm, expect people to put much weight on your "study" where you "learned" that Catholics don't follow the Bible. I find it an astounding coincidence how people "learn" things that allow them to fit in with groups they already wanted to join.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 2:23PM

Indeed. Well, the Bible does tell us that we are all like sheep and have gone astray.

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all." Is. 53:6.

But ya know what? He has His way of gently leading those of us who want to know the Truth to Himself. That's what's so amazing about Jesus. If you really truly belong to Him then you are predestined be be saved by Him.

"All that the Father gives Me will come to Me; and him who comes to Me I will not cast out." Jn. 6:37.

And Jesus saves us from being deceived, too if we seek Him.

"You will seek Me and find Me; when you seek Me with all your heart..." Jer. 29:13.

So, while it's human nature to be sheep-like and go where it's most comfortable for us, actually seeking the Truth takes a little diligence.

Thanks for your comment.

JP| 10.11.10 @ 3:54PM

The Magesterim contains the full teachings of Jesus Christ. The official dogma of the Church has changed little in the 20 decades it's been around. And speaking of misinterpretations -there are 30,000 of them begining with Luther. Sola Scriptua leads to pyschosis - Luther himself was quite mad.. And, no Luther didn't encourage everyone to interpet the Bible themselves. He later regretted the situation where "even the milk maid thinks of herself a Pope."

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 4:03PM

Who said anything about Luther?
I believe what the Bible says, period.
I'm not into what Theologians have to say, JP. I think you know that.
But to actually SAY that believing the Bible, or "sola Scriptura" as you put it leads to pyschosis I believes belies the pyschosis of the poster!

Rich D| 10.11.10 @ 4:56PM

There have been significant changes in the Christian church since nearly the beginning. Perhaps you can research a little church history. Major doctrines have changed or have been added, also.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:20PM

P.P.S. And that's why they wrote the Bible in Latin only. Then no one could read it but them. I kid you not! Look it up. And people were actually burned at the stake for having the nerve to translate the Bible into English so that regular people could read it for themselves.

These brave men and women were Martyrs. William Tyndale being one of the first.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:27PM

Rich D.,

The Bible has not changed one iota, and never will. What also hasn't changed though are those who mess with it and create their own "Scriptures."

This is why God made the Bible to be given to all of us so that we could read it for ourselves. It is the most precious gift, along with His Son that He could have ever given to Mankind.

And He made sure to say this so that we'd know not to be led astray by the doctrines of men:

"For truly, I say to you, till Heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. " Mt. 5:18.

And this wonderful truth:

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever." Heb. 13:8.

If anyone tries to tell you differently, don't listen to them.

JP| 10.12.10 @ 8:48AM

Name one Doctrine that has changed. Name one Dogma that has been removed. You confuse practice with doctrine and dogma. in 2000 years there has been less than a half dozen dogmas added (none subtracted). And very very few doctrines actually have changed.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 3:18PM

JP,

Reread my post. I didn't say that. I said that God's words and will haven't changed and never will.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 3:20PM

JP,

Oops. I just scrolled up and realized you were posting to Rich D.? Sorry. It's gets hard to tell and I was scrolling bottom to top today.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:17PM

Oh & p.s. Luther encouraged everyone to READ the Bible for themselves. This was AGAINST the despicable haughty Catholic church's "beliefs"~ they wanted NO ONE but them and their haughty Priests to have that privilege!

He left the church because of this, and I would have, too! And thus you have to this day the Catholics refer to us Biblical Christians as "Protestant." Meaning we protest their doctrines. It's a term they use to everyone who doesn't abide by their doctrines but we Biblical Christians refuse to be termed any such thing by this church.

We are Christians, plain and simple, which means follower of Christ. No Denomination, and our standard is... get ready for it now... The Bible itself!

Martin Luther changed the Bible. When he rewrote it, he removed several books from the Old Testament and reworded many passages to change the meaning . I own both a Catholic Bible and a Protestant Bible (King James Bible) . To those who are curious, look through BOTH Bibles, you'll notice the differences. They can be subtle but they are there. Martin Luther rewrote and changed the Bible because he thought that he was making it better. Martin Luther changed the Word of God.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 9:20PM

Actually the Catholics added several of their own books, totally wrong!

And if you want to read the Bible translated from the original Greek and Hebrew get yourself an Interlinear Bible. Jay P. Green, Sovereign Grace Publishers.

Good article again by Jeff Lord.

Melvin| 10.11.10 @ 11:46AM

"It is not the Catholic faith and my faith that is failing Catholics all over the world, but it is the Catholic Church that is failing the Catholic Faithful."
Mrs. Leppla
I know it is easy to blame the Catholics for what ails the Catholic Church. But after discussing this with my Roman Catholic Wife, I have also come to the conclusion that it is not those who call themselves Catholics that are at the core of the problem, but rather those elitists within the Catholic Church clergy that have for lack of a better phrase, "Sold out," to politics, money, and power.
Before everyone starts pillorying me. I am a non-Catholic, but believe in God. The above is just my observations, and self-conclusions.
I think that US Catholics have swung way far to the left and are being duped as Sister Carol has, that the left way is the best way, than from the original of Catholicism.
In my opinion maybe this is why the Catholic Church is in such a quandary that it is in. Many nuns are nuns any more at least in the traditional sense, Bishops are not Bishops and this mentality goes further up the chain.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the Catholic Church is being torn in many directions, trying to be all things to all people. It lacks direction nowadays.
As a kid, my sisters used to take me to Saint Mary's school and I would sit in the pews and listen to mass in Latin. I don't know whether it was the priests or the nuns who sang in Latin but it memorized me, it was just beautiful. Now we're lucky if we hear mass in Latin.
If I was to accept the Catholic faith and be baptized as a Catholic, I would do so out of a sense of the Catholic tradition, and not the Progressive Catholicism.

JP| 10.11.10 @ 12:22PM

The Church in and of itself remains stable - of course, I'm referring to the Magesterium. It is the national Bishops Conferences, and thier acolytes where the problems begin. The Encyclical Lumen Gentium of VII gave the national bishop conferences the authority to "manage" thier own diocese without direct Vatican intervention. The priest abuse scandals are forcing the Pope to rethink at least some of the ideas of the 1965 encyclical. Liberal interest groups have a huge influence

Hodgpodg| 10.11.10 @ 12:02PM

Think about it this way Catholic nuns are as close to communism as is opening practised in the USA. They do not earn money or pay income taxes. Every penny goes to the mother house and is distributed by the mother superior to each nun. They live in a communal house, all of their needs are taken care of by the mother house, they have no need for health care as they have an infirmary in the mother house, etc.
They are revered and honored . But are actually living off the fruits of other peoples labor. Most of the time they are into liberal causes and they have no sense of reality. They espouse anti abortion, but if you look closely at their agenda they don't care about it at all. They are into the NOW organization big time.

John II| 10.11.10 @ 12:40PM

Actually, Hodgy, you're not describing "Catholic nuns" but rather a particular generation of American Catholic nuns--roughly, those born between 1930 and 1955: a mixture of the later Silent Generation and the earlier Boomer Generation, rather more heavily representing the former.

The photo of Sister Carol catches it all phenotypcally (perfectly backdropped by a boozy-looking, faux-Catholic Associate Professor Biden): earnest-angry eyes, thin pursed lips, a certain set in the jaw.

"Catholic" is a bit of a stretch to describe the type, and most of them are not at all into the communal living you describe. So far as faith goes, they might perhaps be described as New Age Episcopalian rather than Roman Catholic: they simply don't accept many of the key teachings of the Church, not only on issues of sexual morality but also on social issues (the Church has long condemned socialism as well as artificial contraception and homosexual behavior), on the function of the priesthood, and, most telling, on the nature of the Eucharist, which they take to be strictly a symbol.

They are getting rather long in the tooth, as attested again by the photo of Sister Carol. In much less than another generation they will have disappeared from the face of the earth, and Catholic historians of the future will have to scratch their heads over what the hell THAT was about in the long, long history of a Church always in crisis--or more precisely, of a Church ministering to a world in a permanent state of crisis.

gearjammer| 10.11.10 @ 1:13PM

She looks like Maureen Stapleton playing Emma Goldman in REDS. When are you conservatives gonna give up on the Catholic Church once and for all. Another example of how the abortion issue prevents a sane pragmatic majority from restoring the USA.

John II| 10.11.10 @ 7:43PM

Which is still a scandal for the Church, but better, I suppose, than the 70% rate of Catholics for Democrats back in an era I'm old enough to remember.

If Catholics still knew their faith today as well as they did back when Democrats were still patriots, the figure would now be more like 20% (nominal) Catholics for the Obamanation. And Democrats generally would be unelectable.

gearjammer| 10.12.10 @ 5:39AM

wait till more and more Latinos born out of wedlock start voting according to the dictates of the American Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is gonna wreck the USA. The Nun is gonna be your boss someday-be some kinda social justice Czar. But,the Church is pro-life and that is all that counts with too many.

John II| 10.12.10 @ 2:04PM

A few thoughts, Jammy:

1. Your previous comment (1:13 PM yesterday, a few posts above) left me stumped. You acknowledge (by a magnificent cinematic metaphor to which I'll return in a moment) that Sister Carol is a nut job out of sync with orthodox Roman Catholic teaching, but then attack the Church. This line of reasoning strikes me as a non sequitur, rather like saying: "Obama and crew are unrepresentative of the real America; therefore, America sucks."

2. Abortion is not just "the abortion issue," because it is radically unlike, for example, "the health care issue" or "the marijuana issue" or "the voting rights for the military issue." Abortion is THE issue of the current era, more like the slavery issue that came to a head in the 19th century.

I use the word "radically" with care: Abortion is at the very tap-root of the First Principle on which all thinking about all other sociopolitical issues depends for its cogency: Life Must Be Cherished. Relegate that grounding First Principle to the hurly-burly of what you loosely call the "pragmatic," and the very ground of pragmatism itself disintegrates, with dire consequences that are already in evidence in the larger culture, after 37 years of legalized murder. Think Obama: Do you really suppose that his vulgar socialism has nothing whatever to do with his cold-blooded support of abortion?

3. The Roman Catholic Church is one among many witnesses to this truth about the human condition. Go ahead and dump the Church; the truth won't go away.

4. On the other hand, I hesitated to respond yesterday, Jammy, because your allusion to Stapledon playing Goldman was so stunningly spot-on. And not just because Sister Carol does indeed look like Maureen Stapledon playing Emma Goldman.

Stapledon, of course, was a great actress, and it's a tribute to her art that, whatever her own chic sympathies may have been for Goldman, she nonetheless captures the pathetic crankiness of that ridiculous figure perfectly in her portrayal. (Artists: they never lie, even when they're scarcely conscious of the truths they're communicating.)

The real Emma Goldman was rescued from a well-deserved obscurity about 30 years after her death in 1940 (and still 10 years or so before Stapledon's performance in "Reds")--rescued by the spirit, so to speak, of her own anarcho-narcissism, which started bubbling up in the culture during the purple decade of the 1970's (what we call "the sixties" really stretches from about 1965 to 1975). Suddenly, Goldman (among others) was a new cult heroine riding the waves of feminism and gender-obsessed academic trendiness.

Sister Carol is a child of that era. And now she's an embittered old lady, with a haunted look in her cloudily intense eyes.

You sure nailed her with that image, Jammy. But she's even less a Catholic than you.

Brian B| 10.11.10 @ 12:20PM

My only disagreement with the story is this line:
--those unintended consequences included 2011 premium increases shooting up as high as 9%--
Try 20% and 2010 and you'll be closer to the mark.

Alice| 10.11.10 @ 12:26PM

Melvin, there are still conservative (aka faithful) Catholics, but clearly few if any among the ruling elites. I pray that God will grant them the grace to see the rancid condition of their souls as He sees them in order to repent before they die.

One the bright side, there is an increase in Traditional Latin Masses being celebrated, and younger priests and seminarians tend more toward conservative and classic Catholic values than their elders. The radical-feminist-leftist nuns like the vile Sister Carol are in their 50s and older. Their misguided over-liberalized/leftist/lesbian/wiccan orders and their betrayal of true Catholic teaching are, thankfully, dying out. The new religious communities that thrive and attract the young are conservative, adhere to Magisterium, with members who wear habits. Often full and traditional habits. Time will take care of the Church's worst problems, such as Sister Carol and all the other disreputable nuns and clergy.

As for the situation in Scranton, I hope it blows up big-time into a nasty messy scandal that goes nation-wide so that the majority of voters see the necessity of repealing ObamaCare.

Dave Williams| 10.11.10 @ 12:40PM

I'm still wondering why Bishop Martino had to go. Ditto for Bishop D'Arcy.

http://thetimes-tribune.com/ne.....s-1.229393

JP| 10.11.10 @ 3:57PM

Bishop D'Arcy is almost 80. His dioceses (Ft Wayne-South Bend), while not dynamic is a very very stable one (finances in good order, no scandals, large group of seminarians, and decent schools). It was time for him to retire. He did yeomans work.

Dawn Plantagenet| 10.11.10 @ 1:08PM

Feminist, social justice-driven, power grasping religious orders are to The Church what the labor unions are to the economy and to our political process. Fortunately, like the labor unions, these orders, are dying off. Unfortunately, the damage both have caused will take decades or longer to fix, and only if we have strong, ethical leadership in both The Church and the government.

Seek| 10.11.10 @ 1:16PM

The older generation of nuns are being replaced by, who...a younger generation of nuns? It doesn't appear that any young woman is joining a Catholic sisterhood.

My theory as to the shortage: The chastity rule. An adult life devoid of sexual enjoyment is ludicrous and contrary to healthy human instincts. That ban has got to go if young women are to be enticed. Fat chance.

Dawn Plantagenet| 10.11.10 @ 1:38PM

Apparently you aren't aware of the numerous thriving orders of Traditional Catholic nuns, many of them truly contemplative, others teaching. They are brimming with young postulants, willing and eager to give their lives to God and The Church. And nary a Sister Carol in the mix!

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 1:45PM

LOL. Well I think it has more to do with the fact that they are not allowed to live normal lives, marry and have children. The Bible specifiically says that forbidding marriage is demonic yet that is what they teach!

Here it is and this is another reason I reject Catholicism. but to each his own:

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer." 1 Tim. 4:1-5.

This goes to my point above, that you have to beware. Christians choose to believe God's words, and not false doctrine. That is what Christian means. To follow Christ. To follow Him, you must take care to follow His words.

"He who is of God hears the words of God." Jn. 8:47.

Roy| 10.11.10 @ 2:27PM

Oh, for Pete's sake. "Not allowed"? Nobody forces them to become nuns.

They do not "forbid" marriage, but take personal vows that they personally will not marry, which has been extremely common in Christian communities throughout history.

" Some are born as eunuchs, some have been made eunuchs by others, and some choose not to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 19:12

Practically all of 1 Corinthians 7 is about this subject and it is not possible to read it without concluding that while Paul had no problems with marriage he was also extremely positive about celibacy, including for himself.

A huge chunk of the early Christian martyrs and theologians were celibate, including the ones still looked up to by most Protestants such as Augustine. Celibate monks are the ones who kept the Bible and other books in print for all the centuries before Gutenberg.

Calling these people "demoniac" is the morality not even of Martin Luther but of the real spiritual leader of today, Larry Flynt.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 2:32PM

The Bible says it is demonic. You choose to debate about it? Debate God, then

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 2:34PM

And ALL true Christians are celibate before Marriage. By CHOICE.
Forbidding Marriage is against Him though. His words, not mine.

Dawn Plantagenet| 10.11.10 @ 4:23PM

Margie, it must very satisfying to have such a handle on religion. Just remember the old saying about what it is that Pride goeth before……..

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 4:50PM

Actually God has a handle on me, troll.
You should read the Bible. Did you know that unless you repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ you are going to Hell?

Or do you think you too can escape His Judgment? Oh yeah, pride certainly goes before a fall. Have you gotten on your knees yet and begged for His Mercy knowing that you are indeed a ruined sinner like the rest of us and desperately need His forgiveness? Do you know that apart from Christ you can do nothing? No, not even save yourself from Hell:

"For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the Light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God." Jn. 3:16-21.

Ah yes; another self-appointed apostle of the self whose organ of thought lies between his/her legs. Maybe you are so busy with "sexual enjoyment"( or is it self-enjoyment?) that you have missed the burgeoning traditional orders of faithful young women are who re-invigorating religious life in the Church (we have 5 of them teaching in my Church school). But then, you wouldn't understand the meaning of the tri-fold vow anyway.
Please, a simple rule; when ignorant; don't speak.

Seek| 10.11.10 @ 5:54PM

Various surveys in this country from the Eighties onward have revealed nuns to be sexually active in their private lives -- and quite often, with otehr sisters. Reality bites. Sexual release is no more "self-centered" than eating or sleeping. It is a central aspect of existence. Perhaps if the Church acknowledged a disconnect between teaching and practice, and acted accordingly, more good women might be interested in the sisterly vocation.

As a simple rule, I don't like someone telling me "Don't speak." Children should be seen and not heard (so I'm told). Adults chafe at the thought of being treated as a child.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 6:23PM

Seek,

"Cept one thing. God considers sex before Marriage as Sin. So it really doesn't matter what anybody else says about it. Of course though you'd have to become a Christian by receiving His Holy Spirit in order to be empowered to even be able to want to resist Sin.

And I would never want to shut you up, just as I shouldn't be. Do unto others, right?
God bless.

If you were a decent human being with any real dignity you'd take your real name and converse. You show your own true mentality and state of mind by doing this than I by my quite benign post to Big E.

But that is the behavior of the cowrd, is it not?

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 9:02PM

Rev. Jesse Jackson| 10.11.10 @ 10:50PM

Dear Margie,
You're wasting your time. Like the saying goes, "One man's BS is another man's catechism (or Koran)." The head of the Catholic church is the Pope. The head of the real Christian church is Jesus. True Christians have put their faith in Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. Many Catholics (including their leaders) put their faith in Mary, their own good works and the fact that after they burn for awhile in "Purgatory" they'll get to go to heaven. Another big lie. The Catholic Church still sells indulgences so people can get out of purgatory sooner, etc.etc.etc. You probably won't convince them, Margie.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 10:54PM

Spoken like a true dumbass. You're as stupid and ignorant as Mullah Margie.

Catholics do NOT worship Mary, liar.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 12:07AM

Thanks Jesse! But somebody's gotta say it. It may as well be me. Heh.

Sybil| 10.12.10 @ 12:51AM

Yup! Knew you were a stinkin' God hating liberal.

As a rule, liberals are commies. And, most blacks know nothing about what is truly going on in the political world, but they vote for obama and his ilk because obama is black, like them. It is so pathetic. Obama cares little about the welfare of the Jews; the Jews are foolish to support this commie, narcissistic, racist so-called president.

Leftist nuns are one of the most obnoxious groups out there, I agree. All I'll say in their defense is that at least some of them come by their socialist views "honestly" by getting down in the muck with the poorest of the poor.

I can't believe this one has done that in a long time, if ever, for her to be acting this way. Sounds like she really does just think Obama is the Messiah and Christ is yesterday's news.

Aunt Clara| 10.11.10 @ 2:41PM

Catholic nuns today are the most liberal on the planet! Anytime you hear the words "social justice" it means wealth distribution and an extremely liberal/leftist agenda. The nuns of the Church are at extreme odds with the Church leaders.

ShortNSweet| 10.11.10 @ 2:49PM

The strong-arming is the disturbing thing here. please, enough with the biblical quotes. if you cannot reason logically, and have to resort to a bible or koran or some other higher authority to prove a point, then stay silent. all this nonsensical commentary about the catholic church is stupid, uninformed, and pure bigotry.

The Catholic Church has no business in politics period. Vatican 2 notwithstanding, the tax exempt status should be revoked for ANY institution that meddles in political and especially "social justice" issues, which will lead to socialism if not communism. There is a distinct personal stake in spiritual life and practice of the virtues of charity. They should not be confused with political power plays to steal the wealth of some for redistribution to others. Grad of 12 yrs Catholic education too.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 3:49PM

Let's see ya dare try to revoke Catholic Church Tax Exempt Status ,while other Churches and Atheists practice blatant Politics .

The Tea Party Rebellion Escalates .

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 3:58PM

Timmy* is the resident vile anarchistic Neo-Nazi anti-Christian Catholic. Well, he clothes himself in Catholicism but is a blatant anti-Semite.

He believes that his church, (to the utter disbelief of most Catholics I am sure) that his church has REPLACED Israel. That Israel is null and void.

It is called Replacement Theology, or Secessionism. Look it up.

Christians who are Bible believing protest this despicable belief and we rise up against the liars like Tim*.

God means what He says concerning Israel and those who hate Her:

"For thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced with all the malice within you against the land of Israel, herefore, behold, I have stretched out My Hand against you, and will hand you over as spoil to the nations; and I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the LORD." Ez. 25:6 & 7.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

Thom | 10.11.10 @ 4:04PM

It has been my observation for some decades that the Catholic Church suffers from what the old Cherokee saying says about the struggle of two wolves within each person. From my vantage point knowing several Catholics over the years who are more often CINO and far more comfortable with the guilt soothing rhetoric of Marx and a blind eye for several of the Ten Commandments than reverence for the teachings of Christ, the “church” has let its “brand” become irrelevant in matters of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Nowhere in the teachings of Christ can these statements be even implied, “Blessed are those that rob Peter to pay Paul for his vote”; Blessed are those that rob the “rich” and give to the “poor” ( for their vote)”; Blessed are those that murder the unborn and save both the unborn and the born a life of misery”; Blessed are those that lie through their teeth in support of the above mentioned”; Yet these tenants are central to Marxism and the “social Justice” crowd dressed in piety.

It strikes me that if the Catholic Church can’t control the message of the entities that march under its banner the least it can do is control the membership of those it gives license to march under the banner of Catholic. Whatever virtues Sister Carol may have, being a follower of Christ’s teachings is not one of them. That the Catholic Church will not defend its brand and the teachings of Christ among those marching under the Catholic brand speaks to which wolf has been fed the most within the Catholic leadership.

PJ| 10.11.10 @ 4:50PM

Let it be noted the Catholic Church has more than its fair share of sinners among the laity & clergy & probably always will. Yet it's the only organization that I know of that has survived for over 2000 years.

Something must be keeping it alive & relevant. By all logic it should have imploded a long time ago. If it wasn't relevant, no one would be talking about it.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 5:05PM

Buddhism and Islam have been around for a pretty long time too. Doesn't make them right.

It's the doctrines, my friend, the doctrines. If the Catholic church stuck to the Bible there would be none of this.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 6:43PM

And Tim* fights against the God of the Bible.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 6:45PM

Sport, therein lies the root problem. There is one Bible, One Old Testament, One New Testament, about half dozen different versions/translations of both and too many different flavors of Christianity to recount here. On any given day, you can find contradictory verses without venturing out of a particular version or even Psalms. It is all a matter of translation and interpretation for the most part hence that is why Christianity has become a cafeteria plan for many who call themselves Christians.

I have no dog in this fight between you and Margie but the essence of your disagreements I believe can be found in Biblical passages and the short story is you are both guilty of a grave “sin” if such passages are to be taken literally. I don’t believe any denomination has a lock box on the teachings of Christ and people who take the position that their denomination is more Christian than others should be very sure of the construction of their house before they pick up that first stone.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 6:57PM

Aaaand , in your personal opinion , what grave sin are you guilty of Thom ?

The operative & problematic phrase is , " you are both guilty of a grave “sin” if such passages are to be taken literally. "

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:08PM

Pride for starters Sport, throw in a little arrogance for good measure. You see any criticism of one denomination of Christianity as a personal insult and something to defend rather than embracing the very real fact that we are all sinners and cannot know with any certainty that we have the winning ticket and others do not (within reasonable agreement on what Christ’s teachings are of course). A wise man once remarked that religion would be the death of Christianity. It is on parade in your Pride here.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 7:21PM

You didn't answer the question Sport Smart Ass.

I didn't ask ya about me , I asked ya about you .

Aaaand you speak like Obama . Are You his sister ?

I notice ya didn't answer my question again Shuck & Jive Pseudo-intellect .

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 6:58PM

Thom,

I belong to Christ. Never will I belong to another. Including any Denomination.. which means division. And therein lies the entire problem. There ought not be ANY.

As to the Bible, you can pick one up that is translated directly from the Hebrew and Greek called the Interlinear. It's the best one so far. Jay P. Green/ Sovereign Grace Publishers.

As to interpretation. It isn't a matter of one's own interpretation. The Bible is self explanatory. All one needs to do is study it for themselves. Along with the Holy Spirit He reveals the truth to each soul that seeks it.

God bless.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 7:52PM

Careful, Thom, Margie's a nasty piece of work with an evil temper. Don't cross her, she'll threaten to shoot you. Ask Tim*.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:22PM

Sybil, I think I can handle that scenario but I see no difference in approach between Tim* and Margie. They both have an obsession with being "righteous" and infallible to a fault. Had some in my family tree like that. I learned to live with them and channel their good points to productive uses where possible. Much of the conversation on this topic sounds like your typical argument over sports teams. Everybody have their favorite and the rest aren’t worth a crap. The central point of this article is you have a very visible member of the Catholic Church promoting Marx and defecating on that very same Catholic Church teachings and the focus of this thread has been on personal insults directed at anyone that dares point out the leadership of Catholic Church has a history of this over the years. Last I heard the Catholic Church was all about the teachings of Christ not personal insults because your “team” isn’t quite perfect. If you want to play with the Big Dogs you had better be able to go the distance here and I think the Holy Roman Church had better find one voice on this issue or risk having even more members splinter off to some other flavor of Christianity. That is my sole point beyond letting others demonstrate their Christian views for all to see.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:36PM

Notice Thom never discusses his own Church's factions and splinter groups and problems .

Thom's The Big Yellow Bus callin' The Canaries Yellow .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:48PM

Timmy boy, that's because my beliefs aren't on your "team's" bus or any other team's bus for that matter. My beliefs aren’t going to embarrass me in front of billions like some organized religions have a propensity for. My money isn’t wasted on out of court lawsuit settlements by the hundreds of millions. You are capable of reading both the Old and New Testaments without someone telling you what the words mean right or does it require everyone be on a “bus” or “team” to understand the teachings of Christ? (and all the history lessons contained within the Old and New Testaments).

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 8:48PM

You are a liar. I told the vile and threatening "poor victim" Timmy* that if he came near me I would practice my second amendment right to defend myself. Tim* has threatened me a few times and regular readers know this. I find it very funny that you would defend such a despicable man.

Unless of course you are the Million Moniker Man himself! Heh.

Now run along.. or else I will practice the use of foul language to tell you what a scumbag you are for lying and misrepresenting everything I say.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 9:34PM

How's Mullah Omar?

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 5:08PM

PJ, there is some truth to what you say but people talk about Madonna all the time too……

All denominations have problems from time to time and if you are the big dog on the block you get talked about more often from a statistical basis alone. There aren’t too many denominations that have spent the big bucks the Catholic Church has on the rather distasteful internal matters that have put in the news so much however. That took special effort to go that far off the track in regard to the homosexuals/Pedophiles that seem to be welcomed in the “Church”. I’ll leave it at that with this simply observation, all the money spent on lawsuits over the above mentioned matters could have been put to more productive use such as making some of their charitable hospitals more fiscally sound.

As has been seen in some of the niche denominations that pander to the Marxist’s clarions, when the teachings of Christ are used as a springboard for social justice at the point of the sword on this earth, disillusionment usually sets in and the teachings of Christ take a hit because charlatans in many denominations are allowed to drive the “church” bus and divert the message and true meaning of Christianity. We are all sinners for sure but the liars among our ranks need to be shown the door….

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 5:25PM

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican's permanent observer to the UN, defended its record by claiming that "available research" showed that only 1.5%-5% of Catholic clergy were involved in child sex abuse.

He also quoted statistics from the Christian Scientist Monitor newspaper to show that most US churches being hit by child sex abuse allegations were Protestant and that sexual abuse within Jewish communities was common.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 5:39PM

According to a draft report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education, in compliance with the 2002 "No Child Left Behind" act signed into law by President Bush, between 6 percent and 10 percent of public school children across the country have been sexually abused or harassed by school employees and teachers.
Charol Shakeshaft, the Hofstra University scholar who prepared the report, said the number of abuse cases—which range from unwanted sexual comments to rape—could be much higher.

"So we think the Catholic Church has a problem?" she told industry newspaper Education Week in a March 10 interview.

To support her contention, Shakeshaft compared the priest abuse data with data collected in a national survey for the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation in 2000. Extrapolating data from the latter, she estimated roughly 290,000 students experienced some sort of physical sexual abuse by a school employee from a single decade—1991-2000. That compares with about five decades of cases of abusive priests.

Such figures led her to contend "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 5:46PM

" In Brooklyn, New York, home of the largest Orthodox Jewish community outside Israel, a recently founded team of prosecutors, counsellors and religious leaders is working to combat sexual abuse, and there are 25 cases currently being investigated by the District Attorney – up from virtually zero "

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 6:14PM

Tim* posts these things and if they are indeed facts it proves one thing and one thing only.

Apart from Christ, we can do nothing.

"I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." Jn. 15:5.

Either you're a slave to Sin, or a slave to God.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 6:48PM

You , Anti-Catholic Apocalyptic Crank Lady Margie , use your personal individual interpretation of The Bible and your personal individual opinions to cynically & hypocritically cover & front your own angry personal political agenda and your own personal mental issues .

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:02PM

I'm sorry Timmy* but I don't take my advice from lying scoundrels.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:05PM

"They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption; for whatever overcomes a man, to that he is enslaved." 2 Peter 2:19

That's the Bible verse that backs what I said about being a slave to either Sin or to God. It also applies to the anarchist~ who promises you freedom, but is a slave to corruption. Much like yourself.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:09PM

And here's a couple more Timmy*~

"Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin." Jn. 8:34.

"Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but yield yourselves to God as men who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness." Rmns. 6:13.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:25PM

"hypocritically cover & front your own angry personal political agenda and your own personal mental issues ."

Methinks thou dost project too much.

CalMark| 10.11.10 @ 7:06PM

People like Margie are oh-so pious about The Bible, and nothing but.

However...history is full of literalist Bible sects splitting apart over, almost literally, what the meaning of "is," is. In other words, one literalist Bible religion breaks apart into two or more (each consigning the other(s) to hellfire) when the "literal interpretation" of two or more group leaders disagree.

Live and let live, Margie. It is the deadly sin of pride to claim you have direct access to "The Goods" from on high, and those who disagree are evil. At hearg, Margie is a liberal: thinking that just because she believes something, it is so. Sorry, it ain't so.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 7:20PM

Aren't you another self-professed Anarchist? Funny how quoting the Bible brings them out of the woodwork.

I don't concern myself with groups splitting all around me. The Bible tells me what I need to know. If you want to be a Christian that is your standard. That's what God says, anyway. It's your choice if you want to reject His very words. Your phony accusations are so typical of the haughty Catholics. Still holding on to the old nobody has the "right" to read the Bible all by themselves, eh? If anyone's being "PIOUS" baby~ it is THOU!

"He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God." Jn. 8:47.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 7:57PM

PJ| 10.11.10 @ 6:09PM

Thom,
What you are looking at is the Catholic Church in the MSM which of course exists but there is another aspect of the Church you will never read about. There are pockets of faithful Catholics all over the world (who follow Church doctrine which in turn follows the bible completely) who selflessly serve others in need. Think of Mother Teresa & her sisters times millions.

BTW Madonna is relevant in certain circles. Think Lady GAGa & her merry band of groupies!

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 6:28PM

True, but perception is reality to the masses and if you are the Big Dog you have to defend your turf all the time just because you are the Big Dog. I know the reality in the local parishes, etc but the public’s perception is what is not being publically defended here and that ultimately is reflected in contributions and ability of the “church” to actually do good work.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 7:08PM

Catholic Charities U.S.A. :
The largest private network of social service organizations in the United States works to support families, reduce poverty, and build communities.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:17PM

Yes, Sport and the Catholic Church is shutting down more and more hospitals because it can't pay the bills. I have worked with said Catholic Charities but charity only goes so far when government mandates you provide a certain level of goods and services for less than they cost you to anyone that comes in the front door.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 7:29PM

Hey Sport , name a Religion that does more than Catholic Charities .

Aaaand , You're a Liar . Ya got a Dog in This Fight and you're an Arrogant Lecturing Son Of A Bitch Yourself .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:42PM

Tim*, you've made my point for me. Why so angry?

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 7:46PM

Aaaand You made my point Thom .

Why are you a Lyin' Arrogant Lecturing Son of a Bitch with a Dog in this Fight ?

Hmmmmm Thom ?

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:58PM

Like I said, Sport, you are making my point for me. You aren't a Christian in action or words. Christ would not resort to the language you choose, nor would he defend one denomination over another as you do with such angry words. He would probably condemn them all at this point in our history. There is counseling for Pride but I doubt you are ready for that at this point in your journey. By all means Timmy boy keep venting and demonstrating your Christian beliefs here. Maybe someday you will see the light of your error here. It is not for me to teach you anything, it is your cross to bear as mine is for me.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:19PM

Neither are you Sport , by your very own standards .

Aaaand , I ain't Christ & neither are You Sport .

What ya are , is an Arrogant Lecturing Pseudo-intellectual smart ass ,who addressed me first .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:38PM

I'm a work in progress just like you with the exception that I know the difference between the teachings of Christ and the religions that have grown up around those teachings. I also know the difference between rooting for a “team” with such righteous fervor that the very Christ like act of humility is lost in the pursuit. I know the difference between reasoned arguments and simply bombarding your opponent with angry and eventual vulgar words in order to shut down what you do not want to deal with. It is a common theme repeated over and over again in our Christian society. The “team” is always more important than the tenets of his teachings. Always, hence no Timmy boy I’m not an “intellectual”. I’m just a person that has been places you haven’t yet found in your life. Do you need an “intellectual” to argue with? I could look for one but I tend to avoid such people myself. They are always right you know.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:52PM

Of course you're not an "intellectual " . That's because you're a pseudo-intellectual Sport . If I needed an "intellectual " , I wouldn't waste time on your sorry ass .

Aaaand , You haven't admitted you're wrong on anything yet Shuck & Jiver .
In fact , Ya are like Obama Sport .

Aaaand , we notice ya never talk about your own religion . your own sins and your own flaws , but ya got a whole lot to say about Catholics and Catholicism .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:51PM

Islam.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:11PM

You're Full Of Crap Thom
"Catholic Charities USA, based in Alexandria, Virginia, is the largest private social service network, comprised of more than 1,400 social services agencies and institutions with a combined budget of more tha n $2 billion. CCUSA supports Catholic Charities membership throug h program development, training, financial help, national advocacy wo rk, and media efforts. CCUSA is, in turn, a member of Caritas Interna tionalis, a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and soc ial service organizations located in more than 200 countries and territories."

PJ| 10.11.10 @ 7:14PM

"... perception is reality to the masses and if you are the Big Dog you have to defend your turf all the time just because you are the Big Dog." Agreed.

Yet, the Church ultimately defends itself by having its members selflessly commit themselves to the needs of others 1 person at a time. I do not need money to be kind to my neighbor.

This would have a snowball effect, not just Catholics but all people of good will.

Parishes die -- so what! Catholics in the beginning of this country had to worship quietly in their homes for fear of discrimination & sometimes persecution.

Again, I go back to my original statement: Something must be keeping it alive & relevant. What is it?

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 7:40PM

The same thing that keeps Islam, Hindu, Buddist alive I suspect.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 7:59PM

More than one anti-Catholic bigot on this page.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:07PM

I guess that is why they say to never mix politics with religion right? For many elected Catholics and their Catholic supporters they are inseparable it seems.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:23PM

Ya gotta a problem with that Sport ?

Hmmmm ?

You put your Dog in This Fight .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:52PM

Only when Politics is the religion.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:57PM

Then ya got a problem with lotsa other religions , Sport ,but haven't ripped your own religion , Wise Ass .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 9:17PM

I only have problems with religions that either don't stay true to the teachings of Christ as in the case with some Christian denominations or partner with “government” to get government to do the dirty work while the religious order holds its coat and benefits in some way. There are plenty of examples abound and this isn’t new to Christianity or any organized religion for that matter but it was the practice of the Catholic Church for some time in the past to fleece its members to enrich itself in both riches and power. Religion is not exempt from the same treachery as governments and when religion sees government as a power for good and enlists its power to essentially Rob Peter to pay Paul (for a favor in return) all true religions lose their credibility. Sister Carol is but one case in point and she has many other sisters like her on standby along with many Priests and Bishops in the leadership of the Holy Roman Church. You can see this as picking on Catholics if you wish but as I’ve said more than once the Big Dog draws the attention of all the rest and if the Catholic order isn’t going to right this ship then those that call themselves Catholics will wear the brand the leadership of your “team” or “bus” brings to it.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 9:24PM

That's your excuse .

Now let's see give your own religion a workout Sport .

You're Up Boy !

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 9:54PM

Timmy, you want to examine my religion, have at it. Just go get your New Testament and start reading…..take your best shot at it.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 10:03PM

Love it!!

victor| 10.11.10 @ 10:16PM

Let me out of this basement, Margie!

PJ| 10.11.10 @ 8:10PM

Thom,
Possibly! But don't forget Judaism.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 8:30PM

Almost every religion mixes Religion & Politics . Thom just singles out Catholics when it suits his apologetics

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 8:59PM

Timmy, since you spend a portion of every day, every day pretty much cutting and pasting us facts we can’t find our own, please enlighten us all and list the distribution of the religious orders/denominations in the US on a population basis, please. Rank them in descending order by members. When you get done please explain your defensive rants to all things Catholic in nature in regard to the distribution of various flavors of Christianity and non Christianity in this country. As I previously said a wise man, one wiser than I said that religion would be the death of Christianity and I think you are well on your way to becoming a poster child for such a self fulfilling prophecy

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 9:16PM

Hey Sport , do your own homework , ya lazy ass pseudo-intellectual FOP . I ain't your mommy .

Your mommy still make your breakfast and do your laundry ?
When your done make a list of all your own religions flaws , factions and your own flaws & sins , since ya got so much to say about Catholicism & others .

You're up Smart Ass .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 9:22PM

My mother died in 1997 at the age of 81 Timmy. I've made my own bed, breakfast for going on 5 decades. Did you learn how to talk like this in Catholic schools? My mother drove a school bus for one such school and said they were the worst, even worse than Public schools. They were a completely unruly bunch once out of sight of the head Nun.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 9:36PM

Then do your own homework Sport .

There it is again. Another cheap shot at Catholics .
You gotta an anti-Catholic thing goin' here & we got ya exposin' it in chunks.

Tell us about your own religion and it's flaws and warts and yours while your at it .

Ya gotta whole bunch to say about Catholics & Catholicism .

You're Up Sport .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 10:12PM

My religion is right there in the New Testament Sport. I don't need the Holy Father to tell me what it says or means do you? I don't need a group hug from other like minded people to practice my beliefs, they are right there in the New Testament for all to see. I started off asking you to take on the text of what Margie posted and you never did. Why is that? She have a better read on the text of the Bible than you or is your beliefs solely wrapped up in what the Holy Roman Church says the Bible says? One of you is wrong of course I'm just curious why you keep falling back on the group defense of one denomination of Christianity at the exclusion of any other view on the subject? You are a living example of what will kill Christianity eventually. It will die from within just as this Nation will. If you aren’t willing to question what is written in the Bible by man or your own beliefs then your beliefs must be pretty shaky because you get defensive at the drop of a hat. You can’t question my beliefs because my beliefs are what form the foundation of Christianity and they are not subject to the misdeeds of organized religion or the folly that often comes when people put their faith in the “team” they are on rather than the tenets of the teachings. I’m pretty sure the Holy Father doesn’t look upon himself as a Christ like figure or free of sin but I’m pretty sure if he were to read what his self proclaimed flock has written here he might take pause as to where in the Church’s teachings they went wrong.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 10:26PM

Now we're gettin' to the bottom of it .
Sport got his own Church of Thom and he's got all kinds of things to say about Catholics , Catholic Charities , & The Catholic Church .

How much did The Church of Thom give to the poor compared to The Catholic Church

Hmmmmm Smart Ass with The Big Mouth about Catholics ?

You're Up Sport .

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 10:31PM

Ego. Thom and Mullah Margie have over-sized egos.

They sit and spout off, yet do nothing to help the less fortunate.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 9:25PM

Put up what, that the Jews are on a per capita give more to charity than Christians on a per capita basis? Look it up Timmy, the "jews" have some motivations Christians don't yet have for the most part but that could change.

Tim*| 10.11.10 @ 9:59PM

You're a Liar Sport .
" Surprisingly, then, most estimates suggest that American Jews give away no higher a percentage of income than their fellow Americans. While there are no precise figures on Jewish giving, a 2004 report by Steven M. Cohen found that Jews with annual incomes of $50,000 to $100,000 give away an average of $577 a year to all causes and that those with annual incomes of $100,000 to $150,000 give away an average of $1,206 a year. In other words, Jews in these income categories give away, on average, no more than 1.2% of their annual earnings. A 2008 report found that donors to Jewish community federations who earn $500,000 or more a year give away a total of about 1.4% of their pre-tax income to all charitable causes. These results are consistent with the general reality in America that residents of more liberal areas, people who are wealthier and those unaffiliated with religious congregations tend to give away smaller percentages of their incomes."

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 10:28PM

The Jews I know, all liberals, give more of their time than their funds and gifts. Funds and gifts are tracked, time is not. It is a common mistake to equate what the IRS tracks as all giving. The Jewish culture has a history of savings that the average American does not regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof. Money is important but skills and time are often more valuable in many circumstances. When viewed on a per capita basis the Jewish culture is over represented in numerous humanitarian efforts. It is a cultural thing, born of necessity not a religious thing. That liberals don’t give as much as non liberals is known but money isn’t the only measure of charity and even liberal Jews give more of their time than most. With such a small percentage of the population in this country and the world as a whole I’d be careful judging what NorthEast Liberal Jews report to the IRS and other such organizations as a guide for the entire culture of Jews as a whole. The Jews I know here don’t compare too well to the average ones in Israel. .

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 9:34PM

I respectfully disagree. A true Christians’ motives aren’t governed by the “team” he or she is on. Pride in one’s own team to the extend demonstrated here is all about slapping on one’s own back and saying our “team” is better than the other “team”. Take any 100 so called church going Christians, one from each denomination and a different church put them together on a charity project and forbid them from discussing either their particular flavor of Christianity (or politics) and you are likely to see good work come from that but the moment one’s own denomination gets into the works and all bets are off. Look at every major disaster where religious charities have to cooperate and sooner or later turf wars break out and one side or the other claims to be doing the best, etc.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 10:01PM

Thom,
Well said.
A true Christian's motives are not based on group think or on team membership or even on dogma. Well, especially not on dogma.

They are based on wanting to be Biblical and wanting to please God.

That is what I aim to do to the best of my ability. It's the least I can try to do but I'm not perfect. When attacked I will defend but I do not want to be seen in any way like Timmy* or lumped in with him in any way, shape or form.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 10:07PM

How would you know what a "true" Christian believes? You're a foul-mouthed coward with an un-Christian heart.

Hypocrites like you give real Christians a bad name.

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 10:11PM

That's all you ever have to say. Lies, lies and more lies.

Maybe if you ever quit the lying and name calling you would be able to find out what true Christianity is.
Till then you're destined for Hell.

Sybil| 10.11.10 @ 10:13PM

Yes, hell seems like something you're intimately acquainted with, Mullah Margie.

victor| 10.11.10 @ 10:33PM

Help me!

PJ| 10.11.10 @ 10:31PM

Thom,
This statement may be out of sync w/this particular posting flow; but I would like to clarify 1 of my statements.

When I wrote "Possibly! But don't forget Judaism.", it was an add on to your answer "The same thing that keeps Islam, Hindu, Buddist alive I suspect."

Those of us who follow Jesus Christ's teachings know that the Jewish people are 1 of the kindest & most generous people on this planet, not only with their money but w/their time. We also know they are our elder brothers who must be treated with love & respect. Faithful Catholics who know their faith, believe this.

Thom| 10.11.10 @ 10:54PM

No problem PJ. All my close friends are Christine works in progress like me. I get drilled by a 15 year old going on 25 at times to make me sit up and take notice. I’m not wedded to a particular denomination and have tasted a few over my life. My closest Jewish friend is however become more of a JINO over time and her religion is her Liberal politics now. Even her sect of Judaism is dying out in the US and she calls the Israelis “arrogant” so discussing anything of religion ultimately runs afoul of her politics which is like trying to reason with Timmy. Hence when I say my only problem with religion is when it becomes one and the same with politics I’m merely pointing out that ultimately people cannot serve two masters and when government becomes God or the Word of God according to some men then God and Government cannot every be wrong. It’s hard to overthrow government when they represent God no? By the same token, I believe what John Adams said regarding our form of government. It is only suitable for a moral people. We aren’t very moral anymore and having people argue over what “team” they are on and which one is best distracts from the central issue here a lot of people calling themselves Christians practice something quite different than what you will find in the New Testament. You don’t have to be a literalist to grasp that killing the unborn for political purposes, “robbing the Rich and Giving to the Poor” for political purposes is not something of Christ’s teachings and from a purely historical view point, when a mass of people let their culture be debased by those claiming to be that which they are not then ruin is not long to follow. If our form of government is only fit for a moral people we are in serious trouble not simply because of the external and internal threats to it but because the bulk of the people are more concerned in the group they belong than the central tenets of that which so many claim to be in agreement with. Who benefits from group think? Power seekers and some people just can’t get a clue here. This article is just the tip of the iceberg.

Nobama| 10.12.10 @ 12:02AM

Talk about arrogance!! People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Marxfreesociety| 10.11.10 @ 4:15PM

Mr. Lord - another riveting piece of investigative journalism with the depth and plot spin of a good mystery novel. Bravo. Crooked is as crooked does for Nobama!

Thanks.

NJK| 10.11.10 @ 4:39PM

Wow! It's like a soap opera. First Notre Dame shaming itself with its support of Barack Obama, and now this. I'm a Catholic. This nun is a communist parading around as one. I'll send this to some people I know in PA. They'll be interested.

Franklin| 10.11.10 @ 4:56PM

Jesus said he came to save the lost. That's all of us. He loves us.

He also had harsh words for those in his religion that were there for their own power and glory. Jesus loves them, too, but if they don't repent and change their ways he will judge them.

I feel sorry for Sister Carol.

vik| 10.11.10 @ 5:49PM

here are a few articles by sister carol in favor of health care
"Time to collaborate; President's call requires willingness of all to compromise

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:48PM

"willingness of all to compromise", especially those babies who need to give up their lives for our convenience.

Obama supported the idea of his daughters getting abortions. So he would kill his own grandchildren. Move over "Uncle Joe" Stalin! Make way for "Grandpa Barack".

Cape Chik| 10.11.10 @ 6:01PM

This is interesting, especially because just days ago, I read about our Attorney General in Massachusetts hammering out a deal for the sale of 5 Catholic hospitals in this state to an out-of-state, for-profit company.

All that I saw loosely related to the issue of abortion was mention that the new company would be required to allow the hospitals to "retain their Catholic identity" for five years, but after that time, if it became a financial detriment to do so, they could basically "buy out" the Catholic identity for a price of $25 million payable to the Archdiocese of Boston.

I wonder how many other deals for sales of Catholic hospitals are in the works and how much the Catholic church will be compensated for the sale of its "identity"?

Uh, Clem| 10.11.10 @ 6:01PM

Socialist ends, Chicago means. Pray for the Republic.

dw| 10.11.10 @ 7:13PM

This socialist sister and Bishops like Roger Mahoney, the open borders, illegal immigrant proponent and the churches cover up of the pedophile priest makes it very problematic for me to support its credibility.
It is not a coincidence that those illegals are virtually all catholic and would provide a needed cash influx to the church coffers.
As for the commie sister it is obvious that power has gone to her head which is a hypocritical existence in the face of her calling.

DaveS| 10.11.10 @ 8:32PM

Roger Mahony is a lost cause. Benedict 16 knows it.

Norine H| 10.11.10 @ 8:20PM

I am sure that nuns who place political pressure on CEO's to LIE will be taken care of by our Creator when the time comes.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:43PM

Norine: We'll all be judged. Before that time, "pray for your enemies". It's harder than it sounds. Have you been forgiven any sins? Then pray that she repents too.

DaveS| 10.11.10 @ 8:29PM

[First submittal after a hiatus.] Benedict 16 is investigating many women religious orders and ad hoc associations of women religious. This nun would be a poster child for the impetus behind such investigations of liberal feminism, secularism, lesbianism and anti-authoritarianism among these groups. You can, sadly, pick them out of a lineup a mile away. This 'nun' is a pain in the ass. Any prominent association with BHO is enough for a prima facie case against her. She can't stop ALL the hospitals from closing. Mr. Cook should find his stones and move as if the evidence is clear and the hospitals are no longer a viable option for his investors and stakeholders. Let someone else run them - if they can (they probably can't in the worsening climate.)

John Schuh| 10.11.10 @ 8:31PM

Sister Carol is one of those "social justice" Catholics whose faith can be reduced to politics. She is also two faced. I have heard her arguing on EWTN, backing down in the face of opposition and pretending to rethink her position, but then going on the next day to work just that much harder for Obamacare.

Emma| 10.11.10 @ 8:37PM

Well, well, well, well, well. Thank God for the internet.

And keep praying that EVENTUALLY we may have some more CEO's, who instead of buckling, will blow a whistle and expose the intimidation tactics IMMEDIATELY.

3 1/2 weeks til we take out the trash in NOvember.

Matthew Vadum| 10.11.10 @ 9:01PM

A point overlooked thus far: Sister Carol Keehan isn't actually a nun. She is a "woman religious" which is different. It's a common mistake. E.J. Dionne, a Catholic, made the mistake too.

Antoine du Buizzac| 10.11.10 @ 9:27PM

This "Sister Carol", nun, woman religious, whatever she is, should be forced to register as a lobbyist. This is disgraceful and typical of strongarm, intimidation politics the democrats in the Scranton, Pa area are notorious for .

You don't know anything about human dignity, coward.

Where's the foul language and violent threats, Margie? Hmm? Guess you keep the "REAL" Margie hidden on heavily-trafficked threads.

You're a lying fraud, and I will out you every chance I get, phony.

Yeah yeah yeah.... go peddle your fish somewhere else, troll.

I guess I should feel fortunate that you didn't tell me to screw myself or that you'd shoot me like you told Tim*on another thread. That's the REAL Margie. Some "Christian" you are, fraud.

Are you on your good behavior now, Margie? Hypocrite.

Obama will meet you there Sister and all the other Commiecrats that you conspired with to put babies and old people to death.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:37PM

One may be on the road to hell, as all of humanity was, but end up in heaven, as hopefully many will do.

In the meanwhile, let us stay on the narrow road, and avoid the "mainstream", and certainly "pray for your enemies". It is no triumph for us if she goes to hell.

Jay Walker | 10.11.10 @ 11:11PM

Margie--"This is my Body" Christ said it in the bible, but you deny it. Your selective choosing of passages is a joke, and revealing of all religions except catholicism. That is Moral Relativism. There is no doctrine, and the bible is a product of tradition. That Tradition would be the Catholic Church which Christ founded hwen he said to Peter:"And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" I am not condoning the actions of sister carol, as they are not revealing of the Catholic CHurhc. The Catholic CHurch stands for Private PRoperty, Free MArkets, and peace. Unlike the evangelicals who stand for Endless war, dictating peoples morality, Faith based initiatives (another Bush Failure), ect..Oh I forgot I think half the Evangelicas i nthis coutnry this JErusalem is the Capital of the U.S .

Margie| 10.11.10 @ 11:25PM

Uh, you lie, Jay baby.

I deny no such thing. Jesus said "Do this in remembrance of Me." And His physical body ascended into Heaven afterwards. So if His physical body ascended into Heaven that means He was no longer going to be there amongst them and to suggest that you are becoming a cannibal and actually eating His body is the most absurd and disgusting thing any cult leader could ever try and foist on another thinking human being. If that is what you believe then you are just as deceived as the rest of them.

I suggest you seriously pray about this and get your head into the Bible which is the authority you ought to be looking to.

As for your anti-war philosophy and anti-Semitic philosophy you are just plain out of your mind, oh and blaming evangelicals and the Jews is just the typical bigotry of the warped mindset of the Left and the lunatic fringe.

I hope you wake up soon from your own nightmare.

Yes, we all know that "true" Christians are war-mongers like Mullah Margie the bigot. She claims to be Christ-like, you know.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 1:15AM

Obsessive compulsive Christian basher Sybbie just can't quit!

Sybil| 10.12.10 @ 1:18AM

How's that rubber room tonight, Mullah Margie? Still got victor locked up in the basement?

Jay Walker | 10.11.10 @ 11:42PM

Wrong again Marjie. Read John Chapter 6- The JEws Argued how can this man gise us his flesh, and Christ says. Truly I say to you unless you eat my flesh ect.. Oh and again Denying the statement made to peter. Lastly I am not a semite. DOnt throw words in my mouth. I beliebe in liberty, and because I dont belive in endless war doesn't make me anti semitic. Let me get this right. You liked that we borrowed Money From China, to bomb iraw, which had nothing to do with 9/11, and then we borrow more money to build briudges and embassies in iraq. Worst of all the thousdands of innocent lives lost, and the lives of our soldiers. THis makes sense to you. My Dear Woman it is you who is in a nightmare.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 12:25AM

Right. He meant it symbolically. If you want to be deceived, that's your choice. Go for it.

And the rest of your tirade is just that, a tirade of nonsense. And oh no, you're not anti-semitic but you're obsessed with the Jews.

"I think half the Evangelicas i nthis coutnry this JErusalem is the Capital of the U.S ."

Okeedokee.

JP| 10.12.10 @ 3:20PM

Marge, you just can't jump off of your litteralist's philosophy every time the facts get in the way. Christ was asked 3 times to clairify himself, and each time her reiterated what he meant. In order to get into heavan we must eat his flesh and drink his blood. No symbolism there. When Christ intended to speak allegorically or in parables, he usually let people know. In John Chapter 6 he didn't. He spoke of the Communion Feast , which we all must partake in. And that feast is his flesh and blood.

Margie| 10.12.10 @ 5:01PM

Deceiver. You know better. God will judge you.

Sybil| 10.12.10 @ 1:16AM

Correction, JW--Mullah Margie IS the nightmare.

Most of the U.S. bishops and their conference have walked in lock step with Carol Keehan and the CHA in support of Obamacare. Only at the end when she went off the reservation by distorting the Church's stance on abortion did the coalition come apart. The other problem the bishops had with Obamacare is over a conscience clause, but any grumbling over no conscience clause seems to have quickly fallen off their radar screen. So except for abortion funding, the bishops support Obamacare along with the nun.

King James Version.

Seems this Cook fellow has been eunuched by
a 'nun' of which appointments the Bible says - ZERO!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:33PM

Thanks Sam for quoting that Scripture. Most protestants avoid it because it clearly advocates celibacy for those who are able. (Actually, I think Mr Cook is probably married.)

The New Testament phrase for nun was "virgin".

Bob Campbell| 10.12.10 @ 6:35AM

Very interesting article. I have always believed that Obamacare would be the eventual downfall of Barack Obama. His Achilles heel is the eligibility issue, but Obamacare is the political engine driving his current demise. "We ain't seen nothing yet." Wait till this train really gets rolling. Like the Author, Jeffrey Lord, says: there are many Catholic Hospitals across the United States. ALL are endangered with extinction by the mere existence of Obamacare.

iddy| 10.12.10 @ 7:10AM

This is why people are realizing the oath they took to the constitution in active duty was and still is meaningful. USA has been infiltrated and taken over by a foreign country, War. Most people realize now it is the one country that pretends to be one of our Allies. It is where the communism philosophy comes from.

sharonsj| 10.12.10 @ 10:35AM

So let's see if I get this straight. First you blame Obamacare for the possible sale of three hospitals, because if Medicare is cut then the hospitals can't earn enough money to stay afloat. But then you say the real reason is abortion.

Obamacare doesn't pay for abortions, but that fact isn't on your radar. You think that some future politicians will change that and so in the future the Catholic hospitals will be forced to perform abortions.

So which explanation is the right one? If it's the Medicare one, Medicare is a government-run program and has nothing to do with private health insurance. If it's abortions, keep your religion out of government. We have enough problems already without fundamentalists trying to tell the rest of us how to live.

Vince| 10.12.10 @ 1:59PM

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would force doctors and nurses to perform abortions, if the hospital takes one penny of federal money. Obama said he would sign the bill.

ObamaCare expands abortion.
Obama lies, the unborn dies.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:27PM

Well said Vince. Baby's screams don't have enough "nuance" for abortionists or their enablers. The fix? Keep the baby's lungs filled with amniotic fluid while they dismember them, so you can't hear them, and with any luck harvest their organs.

Lois| 10.12.10 @ 11:17AM

Let see here....a 'catholic' who supports abortion and politicians who support abortion, who votes for politicians who support homosexuality, homosexual marriages, and the government moving toward socialism/communism, say it ain't a SIN because they have always voted for democrat/ps.... WAKE UP, you are the cause of the demise, even the Pope who many democrapts ignore said IT IS A SIN.

Jeremy Stevens| 10.12.10 @ 11:49AM

She has friends in high places not just in politics but, obviously in the Church. One of the nation's premier Catholic blogs, Whispers in the Loggia, mentions her prominent place at the consecration as bishop of Catholic University's former president:

David O’Connell CM, 55, coadjutor-bishop of Trenton: As the dust kicked up by the church’s battle royal over health-care reform was still settling, at the episcopal ordination of a figure (strangely) viewed as "arch-conservative" by his critics, one face particularly stuck out in a front pew of Trenton cathedral: the bishops’ bete noire of the health-care brawl, the president of the Catholic Health Association Sr Carol Keehan.

The move was vintage Dave O’Connell. Policy spat, hell or high water, nothing would get in the way of having a close friend of three decades sit with his family -- and, later, be offered a dinner seat alongside the Vatican crowd in attendance .....

Obama said that healthcare under government oversight would have to ration it based on age and cost. This is a step towards institutionalized euthanasia just like what is happening in Canada, England and Europe under their socialized medical systems. I use to think that Catholic Hospitals would be a refuge from government attack on my life, that they would protect me. Sister is no Mother Theresa.

Aaron Ireland| 10.12.10 @ 1:23PM

The ignorance of this article is surpassed only by the ignorance of the comments people are leaving on it. This whole piece is a straw-man argument! Don't you wound-up un-educated willfully ignorant media sponges know what a BASIC logical fallacy is???????
You're ranting about liberal bias in mainstream media and then BEGGING to be told what to think. I don't care is Stalin himself denounced the CEO's comments, it's A FACT that the decision to sell was being made BEFORE "ObamaCare" was even an issue!
I don't care how badly you want to believe that there's a communist Muslim conspiracy going on behind the scenes, a fact is a fact, regardless of who said it.
Furthermore, those "cuts" in Medicare that the doctor that was interviewed is referring to are baseless!!
You people need to actually look up the healthcare bill. If you have issues with it fine, but every single rant about it I see is based on lies and exaggerations! If it's so bad why do people need to lie to demonstrate how bad it is!?!?!

Do you really think that a CEO would retract that statement if there was any veracity at ALL in it?? Faux News and the entire conservative base would LEAP at the opportunity to make this a key message. Wake up people, you're being lied to.

There is no government takeover of healthcare!!! Even if I WANTED government healthcare I couldn't get any because no such thing exists!!!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:22PM

You're dealing half truths, Aaron. They were considering selling yes, but the fact was that they realized that the hospitals were untenable looking out 5 years because of Obamacare, and so decided selling was inevitable.

galaxyJ| 10.12.10 @ 3:50PM

I'm originally from Pennsylvania. From my years of growing up there, I have to say that there are too many Pennsylvanians who do not share the traditional values of our Forefathers, such as taking initiative to do something other than look to the government for support. PA is a big welfare state, and too many of the people there do not take personal responsibility for the situation there. One question I do have and I haven't found an answer for yet is, "Why in the world are so many Catholics members of the Democratic Party?" The values of Christianity are at complete odds with the values of the Democratic Party. I really can NOT understand what is going on with so many Catholic people. Are they just Catholic in name? Are they Catholic and not Christian? What is going on with that?

cl| 10.12.10 @ 5:21PM

Suggest you read "Can a Catholic be a Democrat."
by David Carlin

Patricia| 10.14.10 @ 8:01PM

If Jesus were alive today he would be a Democrat. Democrats stand for helping people who can't help themselves. Caring for the sick, feeding the starving, trying to lessen human suffering. Republican's are only out for themselves. You are the selfish party. Republican ideas are contrary to Christian principals.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 8:36PM

The Democrat platform is officially pro-abortion. There is NOTHING more selfish than abortion. Abortion is using violence to get what you want.

For the specifically Catholic understanding, Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent unborn child, is intrinsically evil. It can never be justified for any reason.

War is not intrinsically evil, but can be chosen for a just cause.

Also, poverty is not intrinsically evil. Indeed many Catholics take vows of poverty. Our Lord himself was poor.

Some idiots say "If you don't like abortion, then don't have one". The correct analysis is "If you don't want to be dismembered, then don't let others get dismembered."

And remember, "Silence gives consent". If you think you are pro-choice, then your advocacy of the practice of abortion makes you guilty, by silence, by consent, and by counsel, of all those abortions.

Just a quick Google of Sister Keenan's name today has turned up a number of sites who have picked up and run with this. It's getting ugly.

There is a growing faction within the USCCB who are conservative, traditional and outspoken. They're gaining the support and trust of everyday Catholics and are working to undo 40 years of 'hope and change' within the Church.

@galaxyJ: I understand your lament, and share it. I was appalled to find out just how many of my fellow parishioners voted for Obama in '08. Of course, here in SF I shouldn't be surprised.

It's a sad day indeed to see that a nun would side with the MOST SINISTER ADMINISTRATION this country has ever known. An administration that believes it's OK to abort babies, and that if Granny becomes to costly to keep on the machines, then they'll unplug them. My daughter just graduated from Nursing School, and is working at a local hospital. I wanted her to work at a Catholic Hospital, but the way it's looking, there won't be any left to worry about.

I just received my letter from Independence Blue Cross of Pennsylvania informing me that because of the new health care legislation, blue cross would be discontinuing my plan and that I would have to choose from another plan Personal Choice, which I have decided against in the past.
How many times did that son of a polygamist in the oval office tell us that "if you like the insurance policy you have you'll be able to keep it" under Obama care? Our president is a pathelogical liar and my congress woman Alyson Schwartz is his partner in crime. She never held a town hall on the health care reform. She like all the other democrats sold out their constituents for their false messiah. I was a life long democrat; now I am proud to call my self a tea party republican. I will be voting against this "health care" fraud and for fresh new republicans who I intend to hold accountable.

Posercom| 10.13.10 @ 1:41AM

Does Carol the communist know that Obama defeated a bill "the born alive infant protect act" that served only to protect the lives of infants who survived an abortion? The federal version of that law was voted for and supported by every single US senator and even NARAL had no objection to the law. But Obama is one sick twisted man who likes to poke the eye of conservatives just for the thrill of it. The heck with those babies ('punishment") that survive an induced abortion, throw them in the hospital waste been and see what Alan Keys and conservatives in IL can do about it, Bla Ha Ha!
Carol a Catholic- I think NOT!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 6:05PM

This is Absolutely the Scandal of the Obama Presidency, from Obama, to his thug Stormtroopers Tyrannical Oppressive Intimidation and Control, of the American system of private medical care, and America's Private Hospitals, and of the dedicated men and women, who have run these private Catholic Hospitals, which have served the good people of Pennsylvania, for almost a century now, and are all but being shutdown and turned over to the Pro-Obama people, who will take direct orders from the Obama White House.
This is so blatantly criminal, corrupt, and a major abuse of powers, by the President of the United States, that it should, and better, scare the heck out of the American People, because this is not, and will not, be the only thug stormtrooper intimidation and threats, from the power of the Presidency, directly from the White House. I just hope that the New Republican Party of Congress, coming this 2 Nov., then starting work on 20 Jan. 2011, will put a stop to this blatant criminal conduct of intimidation. This is so outrageous, and so egregious a charge, that it merits Congressional Grand Jury Investigations, and a Special Congressional Prosecutor, to Investigate the President, with possible Criminal Charges of High Crimes, resulting in the Impeachment of President Obama.
This is NO Joke, as this is just the tip of the iceberg, and just the beginning of the downfall and domino effect of this Tyrannical and Oppressive Obama Regime, and his Obamacare thug enforcement of this law, by Obama, and all of his Goons, Thugs, and Stormtroopers, from the Obama White House, on all the good People in America's Private Health Care Industry and Hospitals, as well as the Doctors, and Insurers, in America.

It is obvious that the name of a major player in this debacle in Scranton is maissing: Bishop Bambera! Bishop Martino fought this very un-Catholic, pro-Obama 'nun' and Martino disappeared off the landscape (with a little help from his friends). Where is the 'new bishop'. Very disappointing.

Pa. residents need to take a good look at this. This gang went against their own bishop on this! This nun needs to be removed..the scandal that they are causing...not to mention their souls. Look out Catholics who vote for these liberals....now you are losing your Catholic hospitals and when Obama care is working at full speed, they won't only be doing abortions in these formally Catholic hospitals, they will soon euthanize the elderly and disabled. Specter is already out. We must cut off funding to this monster in the 112th Congress and totally repeal it once we get Obama out. Hopefully the Supreme court rules with the Constitution or we are all in trouble because if this health care mandate passes muster, under the commerce clause, there is NOTHING THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T DO TO US.

This is only an "explosion" to all the wingnuts out there... this really ranks up there with the Iran-Contra-Reagan scandal, all the Haliburton-Cheney scandals, sending us to war unnecessarily, resulting in over 4,000 American lives being lost.. oh yeah, huge scandal. And, by the way, it's not 'aka' ObamaCare, that would imply that rational people were using the term. It's only disallusioned, mildly rascist, white folk who can't stand the fact that the president isn't one of you and still managed to pass the beginnings of health care reform (something noone has been able to accomplish), who use that term. It's a losing battle, you know... eventually older white men will be truly a minority in this country, and younger white people, and peopleof many colors, will take control of this country. It will be the end of the Republican party unless they change their ways, and good riddance.

Absolutely, these people on this board are nuts! I can not believe they sit here and complain about this, for one thing Im sick of people calling it Obamacare, it isnt what he wanted, he wanted a public option, 2nd I am sad for this country and all the hate talk that has come out in the 2 years he has been POTUS, no wonder hate crimes are up again. I can not believe people on this board think this is something of a scandal, and the nun is right, this stuff started happening way before HCR was passed, insurance rates going up etc. And really, really, these people on here really think he is a horrible POTUS and Bush was a person to have running our country for 8 years! OMG. And talking about media not covering this or that and watching those hate mongers on FOX?! Hell if its not covered how the hell did it make it on Googles front page news? Fox has a bigger audience than any other station....so Im quite sure this perverted news story gets out. I still am happy I voted for Obama and would vote for him again! I am sickened by racist comments I hear everyday about him. It is horrible our country thinks its ok to return to thinking that dominated 50 or more years ago!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 9:48PM

Barb says: "Bush was a person to have running our country for 8 years!"

Most of the people who hate Obama's lying dictatorial communist style weren't terribly fond of big spender G W Bush either. He was foisted on us by the rino republican establishment. But the TEA Party is helping with that problem.

Barb says "Fox has a bigger audience than any other station...".

I guess more people trust Fox than the Pravda-Obama networks (that would be all of them except Fox). Ha! Good of you to recognize a truth.

Barb says "I am sickened by racist comments". I've never heard a racist comment about him. Was the racist comment because he's white, or because he's black. You know Obama is half black and half white right? Myself, I would prefer a staunch black constitutionalist like Alan Keyes! But a white or latino or asian one would be okay too. It's just that the best man I know of right now (Alan Keyes) happens to be also black.

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 3:22AM

I don't know if Faux has a bigger audience, but that more people trust it (probably not true)- the fact that there is any audience at all for it- is not a testament to anything other than the sorry state of our edumacational system. Ronnie started to gut it back in his California days, and it's been being starved ever since.

And you've never heard a racist comment about our President?! Just look at the signs that people are carrying at the Tea Party People rallys! Read through the comments posted on Faux News articles. Lot's of racial slurs going on around there.

How about a gay constitutionalist? A Muslim one? Hmmm. Getting a little bit close to the heart here for you, I bet.

And finally, (I'll leave you alone after this...), Obama is beholden to the corporate interests in this country- just as much as Bush was, Clinton was, Bush #1 was, etc. While I appreciate a lot of things about Obama, his selection of Wall Street tycoons for his economic "division" is not a Progressive act. It's certainly not a Communist act. Completely Capitalist. It's like hiring the bank robbers to fix the security system at the bank. No wonder Wall Street is doing great now, and the rest of us aren't. Problem is, the Regressives are just as much in the pocket of those folks, especially after the Supreme Court handing our elections over to them with their Citizens United ruling.

Wait, wait! You're all for the Wall Street tycoons taking everything in the name of the free market, can't regulate that stuff!... and President Obama enabled that big time. OMG! Is that good, or is it bad? What to do....

gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 4:14AM

Barb, the good news? They're all right here. We're in the termite nest, so it seems like there are a whole lot of termites. Just get people out to vote this November and all will be well- Progressives outnumber Regressives by a lot, but a lot of us are burnt out and we're certainly not "energized" by the falsely instilled fear that has been foisted on these people. Sadly, they've been had, and when they find out.... watch out Dick Armey and company.

I admire your courage to step into the termites' nest. They're scared, they're angry and they bite. But there's not as many of them as it seems at first glance. They do swarm well, though, don't they? Talk about "lock step"!!

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 4:07AM

Exactly, Ed. We just need to get the vote out. The majority in this country is Progressive. But, as you can tell by the tone here, the Regressives are panicking and will have a huge turnout.

I guess you could say that a majority of the minority is bigger than a minority of the majority. (Well, I bet that sorted out the ones who can think from the ones who can't!)

For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'
Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'
And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
Get ready...eternal damnation awaits all you selfish republicans!

Barb| 10.14.10 @ 8:14PM

Could not agree more! So sick of the GOP giving Christians a bad name. All they ever talk about is the gay people and abortion, never sinks in to their thick skulls that one of the core principals of scripture is not to judge other people....that is left to GOD!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 8:45PM

Huh? It's the lefties that always talk about that stuff. Frankly, both subjects make me nauseous.

Now, "Marriage" and "Life", those are subjects worth talking about. Now I mean real marriage and real living babies. The former being the natural cause of the latter. Beautiful!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 9:28PM

So Patricia says " eternal damnation awaits all you selfish republicans"

And then Barb relies "Could not agree more!... one of the core principals of scripture is not to judge other people....that is left to GOD!"

Are you both insane? Patrica consigns republicans to hell (including RINO's I guess) and then Barb congratulates her on not being judgemental.

Being a true Christian and a political conservative myself, I hope you both repent and make it to heaven.

And Patricia, you think Jesus is going to credit you with loving the poor because you want the govenrment to take care of them? This is hilarious nuttiness.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 8:58PM

Hey Patricia, here's one for you; "I was naked, but you gave me no clothing" and you dismembered me in my mother's womb, and sold my parts for transplants and stem cells.

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 3:43AM

Oh, did they really do that to you? So sorry. That might explain some of the nonsense being spouted in your name.

Fairly typical... you say that you're all for the rights of the unborn, yet you are railing against the very programs that would help poor women either avoid getting pregnant (sex ed. and birth control), or have the means to bring up a baby (government "entitlements").

Can you have it both ways? It's never worked in the past- in fact, when abortion was illegal, the babies were still aborted, and many times the mothers died too. NOBODY is "pro" abortion. We just know that the only way to get beyond it is to support and empower women, not vilify and make them into criminals for making a VERY difficult choice.

20 Year Air Force Veteran| 10.14.10 @ 8:12PM

Wow - The way those "Absolutely"s were thrown around by the writer really increase the their power - More so then the intent of the one who spoke those words. Now our president is in control of the mob? Really? Impeachment for abiding by the rules of our government? Really? We didn't impeach a president that took us into Iraq and spent hundreds of billions of dollars and cost hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives, but we want to impeach a president that abides by the law? What country do you think you live in? This is the United States of America, folks. Vote in every election and make your voices heard, but cut out all the alarmist distortions, please!!!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 9:11PM

The global warming scam is alarmist.

Obama's ties to anti american groups, communists, and white terrorists are facts. What a slimy worm. When McCain brought up the fact that BO started his political career in Ayers' living room, BO replied "I did not start this campaign in Ayers' living room". He lies with truths, by changing the subject and thereby not answering the question.

Obama would kill his own grandkids, because they might be a "burden".

geekinbach| 10.14.10 @ 8:43PM

This appears to be a fine example of why our fore fathers had seperation of church and state. Once religion enters politics, humanities worst behavior appears.

Parting thought ..... Am I missing something here, or has a constitutional line has been crossed?

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 8:49PM

Wait, you mean because you hate this irreligious nun, or because you hate religion?

Did the phrases "Endowed by their Creator" and "Nature's God" in the Declaration cross some "constitutional line"?

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 8:53PM

Do you mean: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof".

The exercise of religion is the first freedom. Can you stand it?

geekinbach| 10.14.10 @ 10:34PM

Actually neither .....
More along the lines of not letting religion influnence the state, and vice versa. This seems to me to be the original intent of the fore fathers.

As a side note, you may want to scale back your desire to villify. It seems to detract from what could be a healthy dialogue and a chance to learn from each other.

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 2:47AM

Hey- GeeBee. Go for it. Nobody is stopping you from exercising your religion. There are fundamentalist Christians would would infringe on my right to practice my religion (Jewish) and the right of Muslims to practice their religion. In fact, there are fundamentalist Christians who would infringe on the rights of other Christians to practice their version of Christianity.

Can you stand it?

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 2:57AM

By the way... "Nature's God" is not your Christian "God". The founders, some of them, were Deists. Acknowledging that there probably is some sort of creator ultimately responsible for things, but not in demand of our worship- or the invented "religion" of a very primitive group of people.

Your Christian "God" is, at least in your estimation, a very small being who couldn't have invented something like evolution, couldn't have existed more than 6000 years ago and had an intense interest in a small tribe of nomads running around the Middle East a few thousand years ago- to the exclusion of all other peoples on the planet. Kind of silly when you look at it that way, isn't it?

By trying to fit God into your little mind, you belittle that what you say you love the most. But it's ok. God's a big girl. She can take it :)

samharmon| 10.14.10 @ 9:39PM

This column is awful. I live in the area where this medical center/hospital sale is taking place, and the reason for the sale is the utter mismanagement of the Mercy system by its executives. Their odious attempt to deflect blame is disgusting, as is the attempt by some conservative columnists to turn this into a referrendum on health care reform. Learn the facts before you begin typing next time Mr. Lord.

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 9:53PM

So you know more about it than the CEO Kevin Cook?

I'll believe Cook's first statement ont he matter: "Health care reform is absolutely playing a role. Was it the precipitating factor in this decision? No, but was it a factor in our planning over the next five years? Absolutely."

The only odious thing about their attempts has been to try and white-wash Obamacare since getting their knuckles wrapped! Odious indeed! Sister Odious!

GeeBee| 10.14.10 @ 10:07PM

Planned Parenthood kills more black babies than any other organization in the history of the world. Margaret Sanger (one of Hilary Clinton's heroes) founded Planned Parenthood with this specific purpose. She was a racist and a eugenicist, and unfortunately she has won too much in the culture war. God save black babies from further destruction!

Anyway, as I leave here I do want to say one thing: Barack Obama could have been worse.

For example, he COULD have pushed hard on getting homosexuality more in the military but didn't. Thank you BO.

He COULD have pushed harder to destroy conscience protection for health care workers who didn't want to perform abortions etc, but didn't. Thank you BO.

Can anybody else think of anything BO could have been worse at, but wasn't?

Bill| 10.14.10 @ 10:34PM

If you asked the hospital chief if reimbursements from major insurers like Aetna and United Healthcare were factors they considered in the sale, you'd also get the answer, "Absolutely!" The difference is the effects of insurers are known and easily quantified, while the reputed effects of ObamaCare are heavily mixed with Rightwing alarmist and corporatist dogma.

What a bunch of lies! The national organization of Catholic nuns supported Obamacare (not just one nun).

The Catholic bishops opposed Obamacare solely becauase of the abortion issue. In fact, the bishops supported the House version of Obamacare which had stronger wording against funding abortion.

The Medicare cuts don't begin for several years (if ever). These hospitals have not lost a single dime due to Obamacare.

The 3 hospitals in Scranton were already losing money. They were also losing money under Pres. Bush. This has nothing to do with Obamacare.

The CEO took the easy way out - he tried to blame Obamacare for what was a pretty normal corporate decision. These 3 hospitals had been losing money for years and the company wanted out.

Put on your Big Boy pants and just admit that you would have closed these hospitals with or without Obamacare.

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 2:41AM

Marty, problem is, you've been had. I agree, stupid is deadly, and you're not stupid. But you've become ignorant, and it might take a Regressive win this November for you to see that.

The cure could be that you read the news and follow the money. But you probably won't.

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 2:38AM

Nice long article. Lots of words. But I couldn't find the scandal.

Let's see. Health care reform Absolutely was a factor- ok, so? Did anyone say it was the deciding factor? Nope. In fact, everyone involved said it was NOT a deciding factor. Problem? Scandal? Nope... not unless you're really looking hard to find one.

This is what's missing with the Conservative agenda these days (I'm being VERY generous by calling ya'all Conservatives. Ronnie is rolling over in his grave hearing all of your whining and high weirdness!): anything of any value. There ARE plenty of problems in this country, and there are problems with the moderate (NOT Liberal!) agenda of President Obama. But this is not one of them. You could write four more pages, and it wouldn't make it so.

You can't be taken seriously- it's all petty BS. And worse, it obfuscates the real issues. Obama is a Muslim, Fascist Commie. And he wasn't born here. Really? Obamacare will destroy the country- it's a Liberal takeover. It's the end of Democracy as we know it. These are not only silly, but they're smokescreens propagated by those who want to distract you from the fact that you're being robbed blind- not by the Progressives, but by some of the Uber Rich. "This is their time," they say. "Look at these dupes carrying our water for them! Let's add a little Koolade to the mix and we'll have 'em good."

The only reason to pay any attention at all is that the Progressive majority is burnt out and may not vote this November. If we had a voter turnout that authentically represented the numbers of people in this country, there would be no question of who would win the election, and we could finally get on with moving our country forward, taking leadership in the world again, instead of proving that we are the laughing stock we've become.

Sharon Angle as a US Senator? Meg Whitman as a governor? Really? Maybe it's a good thing. You Tea Party People think you're angry now? Wait until the Regressives hand over the rest of your lives to Haliburton, Verizon, et al.

Publicly anti-life Catholics who include Sister Carol, Joe Biden, John Kerry, Bill Richardson and the late Ted Kennedy are apostates -- people who claim to be Catholic but advocate political positions of intrinsic evil. Compare that with John Kennedy, their hero, who was unabashedly pro-life, and said so in an article that Life Magazine published in 1959. The aforementioned apostate Catholics may not morally receive the sacraments because they are living in an unrepentant state of mortal sin, advocating the wholesale legalized murder of the most innocent and defenseless members of society by the tens of millions.

Obamacare is anti-life as well. It is institutionalized euthanasia. Half of the medical expenses a person incurs during their life occurs during the last two months of life. Obama intends to help pay for his bill by denying medical care to those people -- telling them to go away and die. That's why there are already propaganda news articles which play up the position of 'palliative care.' In other words, "we'll give you drugs to ease your pain but we're not going to try to save your life." That's what has long been happening under similar socialists laws in Canada and the U.K. No pro-life voter can conscientiously support politicians who take such a stance, or voted for that affront to God.

Sister Carol and her liberal Catholic political buddies give as much of a black eye to the Catholic Church as pedophile priests. Neither behaves in accordance with authentic Catholic teaching. For her actions, the local bishop ought to have the guts to publicly excommunicate Sister Carol. The real question is whether she has the humility to recant and repent.

Remember this when it is YOUR turn for some government bureaucrat (or through pressure on your health insurance provider) denies you medical care when you are dying.

Bravo to Jeffrey Lord, the investigative journalism who wrote this article, and American Spectator for publishing it.

Who pays for Obama’s campaign travels during this mid-term election?
Obama, get back to work!

We need some help from the GOP concerning Obama's campaign travels these past 3 months.
Obama is the President and he should be running the country.
Obama should not be spending my tax dollars to campaign for the Midterms.
How much money is he spending on plane fuel, secret service, hotels, and food?
It all comes out of my tax dollars.
I am a Republican and I don't want my tax dollars spent on Democratic campaign apperances by Obama.
Obama, get back to work and run this country!!

Gotalife| 10.15.10 @ 3:34AM

Oh, get over it! Every president takes on helping out the party during an election cycle. You may not like what he's doing, but he's done more in these two years than most presidents, even in the face of the obstructionist Regressives who block every move with their cowardly THREAT of filibuster.

If you can't think of any real problems to talk about and be concerned about, you have your eyes very tightly shut. You're just like the author of this article. A completely manufactured problem so that you don't have to face any real problems (education, people starving HERE IN AMERICA!!, your jobs being outsourced, etc.)

Do you think the money spent on ALL of the vagrancies of ALL of the politicians is even a drop in the bucket compared to the waste going into our occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan? Or the LACK of tax revenue because so many people are not working? I'm not defending Obama in these regards, but I'm willing to look at the problems instead of making up new ones.

kcbarl| 10.15.10 @ 3:33AM

Ok, so, here we go. We subsidize ethanol producers, sugar producers, milk producers, ad nauseum with record numbers of tax breaks, etc but we let health insurers rape the insured to protect them against the uninsured all the while the uninsured get 30% or more price breaks against the insured? Let's see, local assistance is seen as welfare for the lazy and un-ethical but yet we can subsidize sugar, corn, milk, the list goes on but those subisidies go for big business. If you produce sugar, you are not expected to comptete on the global market, nor for ethanol, or myriad other products, all of those are "supported" by your taxes. That ensures we pay higher prices, makes no difference since we compete on a selective global platform. While the mines, steel mills and myriad other manufacturing enterprises were out-sourced, we sat back. While corporate welfare in the name of price controls reaped benefits, we screamed about the poor. Multi-millionaires learned the ropes while people who actually employed Americans moved their operations to cheaper labor and we've reaped the benefits, cheaper goods means you replace it more often, you don't fix it, you replace it. Now you get an alternator for your car for $250 when it used to cost $70 but it's guaranteed by some company that you cannot even fathom how to trace down to remit a warranty claim to. In the mean time some call center set up for customer service has been schooled in how to give you the run-a-round. We take all this as acceptable. These companies who supply us with goods and services are no longer responsible for the bill of goods they are selling us. Where was I when this actionable game began. I've played this game. I've spent months expecting a company to fulfill its obligation, had it totally default and then the company billed me for their defective product. It used to be that a company stood behind its product. Now they could care less, what is their stock price, how much can they put off till tomorrow or even the next decade. How much less will we expect.?

David Hinners| 10.15.10 @ 3:46AM

Nice spin you put on this, but let me refute your argument with quotes from your own story.

"If the doctor is right, and he is not alone in saying this, the proposed sale of the three Mercy hospitals becomes a harbinger of what will happen nationally as a result of ObamaCare slowly tightening its government tentacles over the private health care system."

and

"Alarmingly, the doctor, with a lifetime of practice in hand, says that 'hospitals close in clusters where there is decreased income in terms of relatively low Medicare reimbursement…because they are the most vulnerable.' "

Medicare is not private health care. Medicare is public health care, Medicare is socialized medicine. So really what is happening here, is Obamacare is forcing the closure of three failing components of the existing socialized medicine system. Thank god.

kcbarl| 10.15.10 @ 4:00AM

For the Obama faction and the Bush faction, look at reality. It is Congress and the Senate, not the President who pass laws. Look at the past decades, not the recent past. The laws passed then and now are what translates into real world implications. If the Congress or Senate actually had any consideration for the people, would we be where we are. The president can veto a bill but the president never proposes or passes one. I am no fan of the current president but it is fallacy to think one person alone governs this country. Look at the tax breaks, look at the salaries, look at the benefits, look at the little things that the Congress and Senate has appropriated for themselves versus the laws they expect the rest of us to live by. Homeland security is a joke but a multi-billion dollar expense. I could not verify with multititude of documents that I was born and lived my entire life in the USA but I could vouch for my daughter that she was a citizen. I could not get a drivers license despite being licensed for decades but I could validate her information? This is our multi-billion dollar security? All this means to me is more money for the government. I have been licensed and documented since I was 19 years old and now at 49, I need to pay yet another agency more fees. None of this was enacted except in the last couple of years and does not even make sense other than it will cost me more money to provide more paperwork. It all has to be certified to some extent, some of it makes no sense whatsoever and it has all proven to be easily copied. But, I will spend the money, I will wait for the documents, I will pay the additional fees while I wait, but we pay for this and will not pay for healthcare? I just paid $250 for an alternator for my car? Since when? I had to ask if it was gold-plated because I could not believe that a readily re-built part cost that much. Now, we have electricians here, those who can figure this out but they do it more inexpensively overseas? So, our electricians are unemployed. How much more can you outsource? When a country does not make anything, when you build a service based economy and there is no one who can afford those services, just exactly where do you go from there? Everyone thought it was in houses for everyone. When no one can afford those houses? Step down from there. If you step down long enough, even the robber baron's ancestors realize that if you do not make anything, if you do not build anything, you cease to contribute anything. Politics will only take us so far, eventually even the dense have to think.

I don't need Joe the Plumber to know where the flushed toilet flows, this article makes that clear.

Heath care has many providers who have eaten a lot of crow since Obamacare passed (so we can "find out what's in it"). They felt passion from blathered rhetoric and jumped on the train before knowing where it went.

All of these professional from varied stations, doctors nurses, church officials, etc., got their rear ends handed to them as a result of playing outside their vocations. Anyone recruited by a recently elected politician ought to realize that they are being used as a tool.

I don't fool around with brain surgery (as a vocational example) on the side; I would hope that being manhandled to an unintended end by politicians instills the humility to acknowledge the error of their attraction to the political light and refocus on their subject matter specialty.

The American people and American small business did not want the so-called healthcare reform while Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats continue to ignore how this law will cost the American people and small businesses more, reduce choice in healthcare, and restrict access to healthcare for many people.

If the average middle class American does not do what his boss wants, he gets fired. Since Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats rammed a healthcare bill into law the American people did not want, they should be FIRED. It is time to VOTE THEM OUT!!! The Congress and Administration used a process that was never intended to be used for this purpose to ram this bill into law against the will of the American people. This sets a dangerous precedent that subverts our system of government. Anyone that votes in favor of this bill is the enemy of our system of government. It is time to VOTE THEM OUT!!! how stupid and how false. Opposition to the Affordable Care Act is bogus "we'll show you" repayment from the angry republicans, who got badly beaten on the issue. All of this is based in ego as it always is in the soulless republicans. Obama beat the political hell out of the republicans and embarrassed them and that is what this is about. The republicans care nothing for the American people or their lack of affordable health care; otherwise they would have at least participated in debate and would have offered their own plan. They offered nothing. The only amazing thing is that some Americans, succumbing to the lies and propaganda of the lunatic right, are considering electing the criminal republicans to Congress again. This after the republicans destroyed this country, increased spending more than any party in US history, and caused the Great Recession. It's absolutely pathetic.

OhBummer's Healthcare Hijacking is nothing more than an atrocious act of vandalism, in the wake of which he struts around like the cxck-o-the-walk, arrogantly crowing that he has gotten away with this crime. He challenges those who would repeal this mess, daring them to lose votes in that enterprise, but one must remember that those who favor the Healthcare Hijacking would have voted for OhBummer and the OhBummer Wrecking Crew in any case. Perhaps OhBummer had better find a country with which we do not have an extradition treaty and start transferring his millions of dollars there now, as insurance against justice.

I have not had much interest in football in 20 years. I watched no NFL games this year. Only one thing interests me. The NFL needs to get rid of the field goal and the pat kick. All pat's should be run or pass. It is absurd to have a have fought game decided by a cheap kick. A four touchdown game should be settled by real pat's; 27-25 or something. A close game should be decided by a last minute touchdown. This would make for more exciting games as the teams would have to work on pat drills as well as two minute drills. No more foreign soccer players coming in to keeck a touchdown.
