There are very few services in or out of the web that are as good and useful as Google Maps, in fact I don’t think that there’s a service as good for the same price, free! Yes Google maps is a free service that has been helping out people for quite a while now, those who use maps know what this software is capable of and they wouldn’t dare switching or even trying a new online mapping software simply because this one has too much to offer, too many tools and too many cool features!
Google Maps is currently considered the best, the most popular, and the most used online mapping service in the world, that’s not all though, it is also considered one of the most used softwares in the world period. There are many mapping sites competing with Google in this type of service, the most known and probably the best competitor that Google has is Mapquest, yes Mapquest driving directions are awesome, the maps are high quality, good tools, easy to use, etc. As great as Map Quest is I still believe that Google has an edge over its competitors for several reasons that i’m going to outline right now!
Let’s get started with the Google Maps description, you can use this description to compare Google’s service with any other online mapping service, after you read this you will know exactly what to expect when you use Maps and you will know exactly why it is currently considered the best in the world.
When you go to G Maps you get the standard version out of the box with basic street maps, the standard version provides users with digital representations of cities, streets, and landmarks, after you are done with this feature you can select Satellite maps or satellite view, this version of the map allows users to view the earth from space through pictures taken by various commercial satellites, this view provides raw satellite images, that means that this view does not provide graphics nor labeling. After messing around with the Satellite view you can switch to Hybrid maps or view, this view combines satellite and the standard version of maps in one, so you can get satellite maps with an overlay of grapchics and labels for landmarks, streets, cities, also country and city borders can be seen!
Something that made Google Maps stand apart from the rest was the introduction of a feature called Streetview, when this feature was launched Google blew my mind away! This simply changed everything, getting driving directions got easier, building routes or plannig trips and following the instructions provided by the software got a lot more simple, with this feature you can easily navigate to any place before you even go there! If you use this tool you will be able to know exactly the turns that you have to make, you will know exactly which roads to take, you will be able to simply do the whole route or trip virtually before you do it in your car or your favorite method of transportation. Street view allows users to view places and directions at street level with real time real life high quality pictures that are updated constantly, and the coolest thing about this feature is that you can look and move around in any direction just as if you where there!

Earlier I mentioned that Google allows you to get to any place easier, faster, and even cheaper on your favorite transportation method, yes maps also provides walking directions, transit directions (public transportation, bus, train, etc), and biking directions. I like the biking directions feature a lot and I was really pleased when this feature was released because I sometimes bike to work, and on the weekends I go out with my friends for some really hardcore mountain biking, with biking directions my biking sessions are now safer because we get to plan routes that have very little to no traffic, I mean really if you like biking you will be able to create the best routes using the most amazing biking trails, Google biking directions creates highly optimized routes, these routes are calculated from elevation change, bike paths, bike lanes, traffic, and preferred biking roads, plus an additional layer that shows different types of biking paths.
If you go to a new place that you have never visited before please use the walking directions feature, create a walking route and then use the street view to check out the places that you are going to walk by, if you are thinking about how are you going to do it if you don’t have a computer because you are travelling or whatever don’t worry because mobile apps do exist and Google maps has probably the best mobile app, it doesn’t matter if you have an Iphone, a blackberry, or an Android phone, or any other kind of mobile device if it has access to the internet you have access to G maps tools and features. You can download it and install it for free or you can use it through a web browser, any mobile web browser. Walking and driving navigation is mostly displayed on satellite maps that allow users to easily identify landmarks, streets, roads, etc. Remember to use the Pegman icon to have a closer look at precise areas that you might be interested in.
Google also allows you to use a feature called My Maps, this feature enable users to upload or include their own content and/or knowledge to maps, you can edit your own maps and add distance measurements, photos, new roads, etc, that can be shared with everyone through social media sites!
Google Maps is definitely the best online mapping software, it’s free, it’s easy to use, it has the latest geo technology, it is a very user friendly and intuitive software, you don’t need any knowledge or technical skills to use this software, you just go to maps.google.com and in no time you will become an expert too. When using G maps you will be able to get accurate turn by turn driving directions and routes displayed through high quality maps that are very easy to understand thanks to high quality photography and great resolution, well defined street maps, roads, and names. Maps also has a search field that you can use to locate businesses, landmarks, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, parking, or any other thing that you might be looking for, if what you are looking for is in the database google will show you the way to it!
