NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Xavier's Tu Holloway was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, while Duquesne's T.J. McConnell was named Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Holloway averaged 27.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in leading Xavier to two wins this past week. The junior guard opened the week netting 22 points in a win over George Washington. He added five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action against the Colonials. Over the weekend against Richmond, Holloway scored a career-high 33 points on 46.7 percent shooting from the floor including a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line, which fell one free throw shy of the A-10 record for free throws made with a perfect percentage. In the win over the Spiders, the Hempstead, N.Y., native also became the seventh player in the A-10 this year to surpass 1,000 career points. Holloway finished the week shooting 43.3 percent from the floor, 50 percent from long range and 92.3 percent from the charity stripe. The weekly accolade is Holloway's fifth of the season.
For the fourth week in a row and fifth time this year, McConnell was named A-10 Rookie of the Week. The freshman guard averaged 14.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals as Duquesne extended its win streak to 10 with home wins over Fordham and Dayton. McConnell, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., opened the week with his second double-double of the season and first in league play as he scored 14 points and registered 10 assists against Fordham. He became just the third freshman in school history, and first since 1993, to hand out 10 assists in a game. McConnell became the fifth student-athlete in the A-10 this year to perform the point-assist double-double. He followed that performance with 15 rebounds, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in a win over Dayton. McConnell shot 61.1 percent from the floor, while dishing out 14 assists and not committing a single turnover. He improved his assist-to-turnover ratio in league play to a conference best 14.7.
Both schools are back in action on Wednesday, February 2 as Duquesne hosts George Washington, while Xavier travels to face Charlotte.
