In June 2007 the school attendance boundaries for the Burlington Secondary Schools were revised. One of the school boundary adjustments included the relocation of the Ascension Catholic Elementary School attendance area from Assumption Catholic Secondary School to Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School. At that time the Burlington Secondary School Boundary Review Committee (Burlington Secondary SBRC) was reluctant to redirect Ascension Catholic Elementary School to Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School. However, the redirection was necessary since Assumption Catholic Secondary School could not physically accommodate any additional portable classrooms on its school site. It was noted by the Burlington Secondary SBRC that based on the projected future declining student enrolment in the Assumption Catholic Secondary School attendance area, there would be student capacity at Assumption Catholic Secondary School in approximately 5 years to accommodate the return of the Ascension Catholic Elementary School students. The current student enrolment projections and expected declining student enrolment at Assumption Catholic Secondary School will result in empty classrooms at Assumption Catholic Secondary School by September 2011.

Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School opened in September 2007 as a Grade 9, 10, and 11 school and was projected to have available student capacity for approximately 5 years to accommodate the Ascension Catholic Elementary School students. Based on the current student enrolment projections and the greater than expected student enrolment growth at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School portable classrooms will be required at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School for September 2011 unless the redirection of the Ascension Catholic Elementary School is implemented for September 2011. Subsequently, the Board directed staff to initiate a school attendance boundary review process for the redirection of Ascension Catholic Elementary School attendance boundary back to Assumption Catholic Secondary School.

The scope of this proposed boundary adjustment is such that a typical school boundary review process which includes the development and evaluation of school attendance boundary options is not necessary. This boundary review process would involve consultation with the respective school communities involved to seek their comments and input regarding the implementation and transition to redirect the Ascension Catholic Elementary School attendance boundaries back to Assumption Catholic Secondary School from Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School. In addition, the boundary review will examine how an open boundary option can address the issues involved.
