Ford has been a part of the Australian car scene since the first Ford appeared on our roads in 1904. Best known for the Ford Falcon, an Australian driving institution, Ford is the only Australian car manufacturer producing their own high-volume engines.
The Ford Motor Company of Australia was established in Victoria in 1925, and still manufactures the popular Falcon and Ford Territory lines from the state. Ford Australia also imports international models such as the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta, both of which are among Australia’s most popular cars.
Employing over 4000 people across the country, Ford Australia currently holds approximately 10% of the local market. In 2008, local Ford operations produced over 60,000 vehicles, while overall Australian Ford sales in the same year were in excess of 100,000.
Fords aren’t only a popular Australian consumer choice, with Ford Falcons making up a large part of both Australian Police and taxi fleets. In fact, the company sells around 3,000 Falcons per month, predominantly within Australia and New Zealand.
Ford is also credited with the invention of the ‘ute’ in 1932, produced specifically for Australian farmers, and the Falcon Ute still ranks as one of the manufacturer’s most popular lines.
The Ford Performance Vehicle division, based in Melbourne and created in 2002, produces high-performance variants of the Falcon and Territory lines. In 2003, the division created the Ford Performance Racing team to create a closer connection between the Performance Vehicle line and the company’s V8 Supercar presence.
