Pike is an energetic four year old black Labrador who still acts like a playful, six-month-old puppy.

But when his harness goes on his personality changes to all business as a working guide dog to help CNIB Vancouver staffer Tamara Tedesco, who only has eight per cent vision and needs Pike to help her navigate  city streets safely.

In recognition of May being Vision Health month, Pike and Tamara will be doing a presentation later this month at John Henderson Elementary

I try to write something informative whenever I post something about the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) an organization our family volunteers with as puppy sitters - perhaps  a new dog fact I've learned, some tidbit of information I've gleaned from reading up about dogs, or a training tip I've picked up, etc.

But this

One of the requirements of being a puppy sitter for the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) is you must attend at least one training class a month. Puppy raisers must go weekly.

As a volunteer puppy sitter I actually find it a privilege, and not a hardship at all, because I'm learning so much since I began showing up for the classes with PADS trainer Sharon Andriash nearly a

In response to the Whistler sled dog massacre, legislation was introduced today to toughen B.C.'s animal cruelty law, which if passed would bring the maximum fine for anyone harming an animal to $75,000 from $10,000 and imprisonment for up to two years instead of six months. You can read my story here.

Dr. Bill Haglund, the forensic anthropologist who is heading the exhumation work at the mass grave of the Whistler sled dogs, is well-respected in the industry and once worked on the notorious Green River serial killings of young women around the Seattle area in the early 1980s.

You can hear Haglund in a video describing difficulties investigators faced in the beginning of

Dog lovers curious about a holistic approach to their pooch won't want to miss the second annual Petnership Project Holistic Wellness Pet Show.

Last year's event attracted 1,000 participants and organizers are hoping even more will come out Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 when the event will be held at the Hellenic Community Centre in Vancouver. It's being billed as a one-of-a-kind show that provides "alternative, progressive pet information" from more than 45 exhibitors.

Some of the workshops include a holistic approach

Having a well-trained dog could be just one click away.

In an earlier post I mentioned how the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) is moving towards using the "clicker method" for dogs in their advanced training program. As Margaret Hicks, director of training for PADS, explains when the handler uses a hand-held device that makes a clicking sound it serves an an "event marker." The sound indicates to the dog they are doing something desired by the handler, and in the case with PADS they are rewarded

Dog lovers and those against pets in stores are weighing in across the country  on whether dogs should now be banned from Home Depot after a Shih Tzu bit off the tip of a staff greeter's nose in Ottawa.

You can read that story here.

Home Depot is hearing from people from both sides of the issue across the country, and will be making a decision within four to five days on whether to continue allowing dog owners to bring their

Heading out to a high end hotel, where you had to go past a doorman, to pick up a PADS (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society) puppy I figured this must be one pampered pooch.

Hawk happens to live in a suite at the Coast Plaza Hotel with his puppy raiser Robyn Newton and her partner, who recently took a weekend vacation and needed a puppy sitter. But despite the nice digs, Hawk was not at all snobbish. This lovely black Labrador has to be one of the favourite dogs-in-training our family has had the privilege of caring for short-term. Perhaps it was the steady stream
