Anger and violence continue to reign in Ivory Coast following presidential elections meant to end the bitter divides that pushed this once stable West African nation into civil war. The country’s election authorities declared Alassane Ouattara the winner of a Nov. 28 run-off poll, but the Constitutional Council invalidated the results and handed incumbent Laurent Gbagbo a new term. While world leaders have pressed Gbagbo to step aside, the veteran president has vowed to hang on to power and ordered foreign peacekeepers out of the country.
