Born: June 03, 1980

He was one of the pillars of the Greek National Team that won the silver medal at the 2006 World Championship  and then triumphed winning the gold medal at the 2005 European Championship. Prior to this, he also played at the 2001 European Championships, and won a bronze medal at the 1998 U-18 European Championship, then he won the silver medal at the World Championship 2006. Simply, at international level Lazaros Papadopoulos is one of the most consistent and dominating centers, and at 31, he is at the top of his professional career. So, the pure impression is that he will still  have to write the most important chapters in his career, isn’t ’it?

Lazaros Papadopoulos was born on June 3rd 1980 in Krasnodar, Russia, where he used to live with his parents Theodore and Marina and a younger sister, Agapi. In 1990, when he was 10 years old his family decided to move back to Thessaloniki, Greece, where they originally came from. Years later, Lazaros married Natalie, who also comes from Russia, and today they have two daughters, Daphne and Nefeli. He started playing basketball as a child, and at the age of 12 he joined the basketball team of AO Stavroupolis, starting from the youth team making his way to the junior team in one year. In 1996, he was called to play for the first time in the National Junior Team. During the same year he was traded to Iraklis, staying in Thessaloniki, where he made his debut with the senior team.

He played for Iraklis until the end of the 2000/2001 season, the best one for “Lazos” with 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. During those years, he also traveled to the United States, invited to play at the NBA Rocky Mountain summer league of Utah Jazz, then to workout with Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings, finally being invited to the Chicago pre draft camp, playing some pickup games with the legendary Michael Jordan and also Isaiah Thomas and Antoine Walker. But playing a positive last season with Iraklis deserved him a call from Panathinaikos Athens. He didn’t hesitate to go and signed on for two seasons. In 2003 he won both the National Championship and Cup, but above all on May 5th, 2002 at Casalecchio of Bologna, Panathinaikos won the Euroleague title beating the home team of Virtus, with a sensational 22 years old Papadopoulos: 12 points and 5 rebounds in 17’ on the court.

After going back to Iraklis for one season (14.0+8.5, points and rebounds between competitions in Greece and Europe), Lazaros signed an important three year contract with Dynamo Moscow. On the court, he constantly wrote double figures points, with 15.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in the 2004/2005 Uleb Cup, then 12.9+6.6 in 2005/2006 winning the trophy beating Aris Thessaloniki in the finals, and finally 14.8 point and 7.2 rebounds in the 2006/2007 Euroleague, constantly collecting double figure numbers in the Russian Superleague as well. Then, Lazaros signed a new three years contract with Real Madrid, but he had limited minutes to play in the first season (6.9+3.2 in Euroleague) and in the second was traded to Fortitudo Bologna, called by their GM at the time - Zoran Savic. The financial troubles of the club destroyed the team’s confidence and the season (despite 12.0+5.8 in Eurocup and 11.5+7.7 in the Championship for Lazos).

Finally, on November 2009 after terminating the contract with Real Madrid, he came back to Greece and signed for PAOK Thessaloniki, writing 11.0 points and 7.9 rebounds in the Greek Championship. So we are at the present, with Lazaros Papadopoulos resigned by PAOK Thessaloniki for the 2010/2011. In the first half  of the season he wrote excellent stats, playing 16 games in the Greek League with 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 17.0 of ranking and  leading the team to the  4th place (10-7), more 6 games in the Eurocup with double-double figures (16.0 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 23.8 of ranking in 33' per game) and 2 games in the Greek Cup (13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 20.0 of ranking). But the club continued to have financial troubles, and finally on February  14th Papadopoulos and PAOK officially separated. Then he decided to move once more to Russia, where he signed with BC Khimki Moscow Region.
