Motorcycle collides with car; passenger taken to hospital

A motorcycle passenger was taken to Watauga Medical Center on Wednesday after the bike collided with a car waiting to turn.

Storm snaps trees

Pockets of Watauga County are still dealing with damage from Monday's storm, which uprooted trees, totaled a minivan and caused a rock slide on U.S. 321 North. An area near the Grandfather Campground in Foscoe suffered what residents believe was a brief tornado at about 2 p.m.

Woman hit by car

A 64-year-old woman was hit by a car Monday evening near the intersection of N.C. 105 and Wilson Drive in Boone.

Sales tax increase, job cuts for county?

The county will consider budget cuts, pulling from the fund balance and a possible quarter-cent sales tax increase to build the 2011-12 budget, commissioners indicated at the end of a budget planning retreat Saturday. Any budget reductions will probably come from cutting jobs and employee benefits, as all other avenues have been tapped out, county manager Rocky Nelson said.

Fueling frustrations

OASIS renovates shelter

For more than 30 years, OASIS has helped victims of domestic violence and sexual assault remake and restore their lives. The organization has now received its own revitalization in the form of a renovated emergency shelter. OASIS, or Opposing Abuse with Services, Information and Shelter, celebrated the renovation Friday with a small group of guests, keeping the event low-profile to ensure that the shelter location remained secret.

An Avery County man died early Saturday morning after he was run over by a pickup truck at the Maymead site on N.C. 105 in Boone on Friday.

Site determined for Solar Decathlon
