Cancelled Perfect Dark Core: new details News

Xbox 360 News by Wesley Yin-Poole

Yesterday

The cancelled game that began as Perfect Dark 2 was to feature a very different Joanna Dark.

The image below, unearthed by unseen64.net, shows a more moody Dark than the one depicted in Perfect Dark and Perfect Dark Zero.

According to the site, Perfect Dark Core, what began as the true sequel to N64 first-person shooter Perfect Dark, featured a "more realistic atmosphere than its predecessors, with Joanna having a different and less feminine behaviour (smoking, flirting)".

This isn't the first time we've heard of Perfect Dark Core. In 2009 Mundorare ran an article with a number of prototype videos, below.

Perfect Dark Core changed during the pre-production phase – to the point where it stopped being a Perfect Dark game altogether.

Before it was cancelled in 2009, the player controlled a male character. The game was still an action first-person shooter, but had mechs.

Xbox 360 game Perfect Dark Zero launched in 2005 to a 7/10 Eurogamer review. The original was remade for Xbox Live Arcade last year.

New Rare boss Scott Henson told Eurogamer in an interview that Kinect development is the studio's focus. A sequel to the hugely successful Kinect game Kinect Sports is rumoured to be in development.

A spokesperson for Rare told Eurogamer it has nothing to add on the matter.

She looks borderline anorexic. Not good

Glad they cancelled the EMO make over, now if someone could tell the DMC guys to do the same, world balance will be restored.

Rare, games like Viva Pinata and Banjo: nuts and bolts prove you guys still have talent, please don't just make Kinect shovelware from now on.

Flirting and smoking is 'less feminine' behaviour? I feel I should be outraged. Nevermind.

Shame that Perfect Dark Core was cancelled. It would have been interesting to have another stab at making a good Perfect Dark game. First was awesome. Second was middling. Third time is the lucky charm, as they say.

Perfect Dark died when they canned the Gunsmith Cats/Dirty Pair style Cyberpunk anime version they were cooking up originally for Zero before Microsoft wanted a more "American appealing" game.

Seriously, the art was amazing looking for the canned game and looked so much than the clusterfuck that we eventually got.

This "Gritty Reboot" looks awful as well. Though reading just how badly managed Rare has been since inception, it's amazing they are still around.

And now all they'll work on is Kinect mini-game collections a la Kinect Sports and the avatars.

Real shame.

He forgot to mention voting and driving as well.

But really, Perfect Dark Zero pretty much killed the franchise (even though it wasn't as awful as some make it out to be) but this really would have cemented the lid on the coffin.

Surely a studio like Rare can balance Kinect and non-Kinect development...

I mean, I know there isn't much turning up for Kinect so far but really!?

Whilst I'd LOVE to see another PD, I'm also not keen on a grungy, gritty, realistic makeover. More camp, please.

I have to say, though, I like the slightly exaggerated, cartoony animation style going on there. And the funky sax.

It was canned after new-look Joanna couldn't find any pants for her five foot long legs.

@RobotRocker: a Dirty Pair (original, not Flash) co-op shooter with some collapsing buildings for their accidental destruction would be great. So would a Halo-esque Bubblegum Crisis game. Or would today's blinkered youths struggle to identify with perky Japanese girls instead of gruff old Master Chief?

The first one ruled with the brilliant unlockable weapons and dominant AIs. The second was shat. I can't see them ever being able a replicate the fun I had with the (single player enabled) multiplayer on the N64.

Amazing stuff. Only a few years ago I would have loved Rare to make a new Perfect Dark, but judging by their fucking appalling output in recent times, I'd rather anyone but those chumps make it. Chumps.

She looks like a front-line soldier from those shots, rather than the sophisticated spy that they set her up as with the previous two games. If that game were to have seen a release it would probably be better billed as a completely new game instead of a reboot. The name Rare still gets peoples' attention, even though mostly because people want to see if they've rediscovered whatever it was that made the N64 season much more enjoyable.

Um, what does that mean? I now mourn the lost opportunity of the old Rare potentially leaving us with another blow away title, as good as - or potentially better than - the original. :(

So would a Halo-esque Bubblegum Crisis game.

Bungie already made that. It was called Oni :P (Shame it wasn't that good. Live and learn, eh?)

It was a shame though, Rare could have pulled off something like that spectacularly before MS interfered. Seriously, I am amazed they didn't go out of business back in 2001 considering the Ex-Rare staff's grumblings at how bad it was run even back then. I can see now why Nintendo thought the writing was on the wall.

Bizarre amount of Rare hatred going on here. Personally I thought Viva Piñata and sequel, BK:Nuts and Bolts and Kinect Sports were great. Kameo was a bit short but nevertheless a good showcase for the 360. As for PD:Zero, the single player was very disjointed, but I had some fantastic fun on multiplayer, what with the jetpacks and shield-only games. Some brilliant map design too.

There's still a spark of hope in me that now they've got the mandatory crowd pleaser that is Kinect Sports out of the way, they can release something more Rare-esque. Kinect enable Blast Corps or Killer Instinct anyone?

@RobotRocker: Eh? I missed wearing a robot suit in that... possibly because I got about halfway through and gave up in disgust. Was there one? Why was the voice acting so awful? And why did Konoko look different in each drawing/cinema sequence?

@MojoDex: The first steps are to leap 30 feet in the air, talk in a squeaky voice, and get raped by some tentacles.

Those work-in-progress/concept videos looked pretty cool.

Perfect Dark Zero was a patchy and inconsistent single player game. The ability to roll made the multiplayer games seem silly as it took a stupid amount of bullets to take down an opponent unless you could get in a headshot. And not being able to jump or climb over very low ledges was daft in both modes. But I loved the variety of weapons and tools, along with the several ways each one could be used, and how your movement was compromised with heavier ones so it was often a good idea to put them away to move around the maps quickly. Knowing how to use them was a great equaliser when playing against people more used to previous FPS titles, alas this also meant that a lot of FPS veterans took an instant dislike to it.

Rare could probably use Kinect to make weapon handling more intuitive, and reproduce some of the actions in the top video. Aiming accuracy wasn't as important as knowledge in Perfect Dark Zero after all, and developers should avoid cramming the shoulder buttons of a controller with functions if they want their games to be accessible to more players.

Rare used to be so original and imaginitive. I believe they are going to waste by making Kinect Sports games. Any developer can make those for Microsoft. Only Rare can do Banjo and Conker.
