Open Minds:  Supporting VPS employees with mental health issues or caring for someone with mental health issues.

Depression and other mental illnesses affect one in five people at some point during their lifetime. These figures have a significant impact on the Victorian Public Service (VPS). With a workforce of 33,000 full-time employees, some 6600 VPS employees are likely to be affected at some point in their lives by a mild to severe mental illness.

Open minds is a peer-directed support group for VPS employees with mental illness or caring for someone with mental illness. Founded by VPS employees who have firsthand experience of mental illness as consumers and carers, Open minds provides support based on shared experience and also works to decrease the stigma associated with mental illness.

Open minds holds a regular series of seminars and forums on mental illness, recovery and mental wellness. Members are also available to present at seminars and also provide a consumer and carers’ perspective on mental heath issues
