Council of Ministers Approves Regulation Establishing Council on Grand Dam
Addis Ababa, April 16, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - The Council of Ministers approved a regulation establishing a National Council in charge of coordinating public participation for construction of the “Grand Millennium Nile Dam Project'” which was renamed as “Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project”, the council said in a press statement it issued here on Friday.

The establishment of the Council is aimed at facilitating ways enhancing the construction of the dam through the popular participation of the public, according the statement.

The Council is directly accountable to the Prime Minister.

The Council is also entrusted to mobilize the public support towards the construction of the large–scale dam.

It will coordinate efforts of Ethiopians living in and outside of the the country to success of the project, the statement said.

The national council also responsible for creating awareness on the benefits the project will bring to Ethiopia and also to neighboring countries particularly to lower riparian countries.

The members of the Council will be drawn from among federal and regional government institutions as well as different public organizations, among others.

The regulation states that the council's president, secretary and members of the executive committee will be appointed by the government.

The government will allocate all the necessary budget to the Council.
