Another day, another sign that the tech sector is scorching hot. Yesterday, two of the world's largest makers of PC hardware exceeded Wall Street expectations in their first-quarter earnings report.

Intel posted a 34% increase in profit for the first three months of the year, and a 25% jump in revenue. Intel's acquisitions of McAfee and Infineon last year increased the company's total workforce by 13.3%. IBM saw profits grow by 10% to $2.86 billion, and saw the biggest jump in revenues that it's had in a decade.

Meanwhile, two smaller computer services companies -- VMware and Juniper Networks -- also posted strong earnings results.

The surprising growth at these companies was fueled by corporate investments in data centers and network servers.

Yet even before most of the earnings reports were posted, an Intel executive sounded a note of caution about the ability of American workers to take advantage of tech's growth. Intel plans to add 1,000 jobs jobs in Oregon over the next few years, but will have to hire from outside of the state because its residents aren't educated well enough, said Renee James, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's software and services group.
