Johan Galtung on “The Fall of the US Empire”

Although Johann Galtung was interviewed over a year ago we think what he says is as pertinent now as it was then.

The amount of money the United States has spent on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq surpassed the $1 trillion mark last week, according to the National Priorities Project Cost of War counter. To date, over $747 billion has been appropriated for the war in Iraq and $299 billion for the war in Afghanistan. The US is spending over $136 billion on the wars this year. I’m joined now by Johan Galtung, who has spent the past half-century pursuing nonviolent conflict resolution in international relations. He’s known as a founder of the field of peace and conflict studies.

Row over Wikileaks leaker Bradley Manning treatment

If a detainee is stripped naked and kept in isolation, that’s torture

Professor Malcolm Evans, chairman of the United Nations subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, was speaking at a conference in Cardiff where he was outlining ways to tackle torture in countries.

Manning, a former Pembrokeshire schoolboy, is being detained in a US military prison after being arrested last May for his part in the WikiLeaks saga.

The 23-year-old intelligence analyst is reportedly being subject to prolonged isolation, sleep deprivation, and being stripped naked in his cell.

He is facing a number of charges in the US for allegedly passing diplomatic cables to the website.

The UN has launched an inquiry into whether his alleged conditions amount to torture.

Although he refused to comment on Manning’s case specifically, Professor Evans said that leaving an individual in isolation and forcing them to remove their clothes is a form of torture, in his opinion.

He said: “One of the ongoing issues is what amounts to torture. I have long taken the view that holding a person in extended periods in types of conditions, particularly if it is in solitary isolation can, in my private, personal view, amount to a form of torture, deliberately to try to extract information.

New unified plan redefines the boundaries and missions of the major commands

By Henry Kenyon – Defense Systems – April 11, 2011

The Defense Department has released an updated strategic document outlining the missions, roles and geographic areas of responsibility of its combatant commands.

The most significant change in the Unified Command Plan 2011 shifts areas of responsibility in the Arctic, with the U.S. European Command and U.S. Northern Command now sharing responsibility for the region. Previously, the two commands and the U.S. Pacific Command covered the region. The plan also empowers the Northern Command to advocate for Arctic capabilities. …

Lindis Percy Acquitted at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court April 5, 2011

This case arose out of an incident at the United States Air Force base at Mildenhall, Suffolk on 30 October 2009. Lindis was on trial for an alleged offence under section 128 Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA) 2005.

At about 12.45 pm Lindis walked into USAF Mildenhall via Gate 1, showed her driving license to US security (Kyler Sherman Brown) at the guard gate. He took it, examined it front and back and said: “O.K Mam – there you go – have a nice day”. She was on the base unchallenged for about an hour and was making her way out when she was recognised by Richard Fryer (RAF Liaison officer at Mildenhall) who alerted Robert Curtis (Ministry of Defence Police Agency officer). She was arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police station …
