Governments Building Stronger Roads, Boosting The Northern Economy

Ontario created over 1,300 jobs and improved road safety by upgrading Highway 69 between Sudbury and Estaire, which officially opened today.

A 20-kilometre section of Highway 69 was widened from two to four lanes. This is the first stretch of four-laned highway to be completed on the Sudbury/Parry Sound corridor. Construction of this stretch of road began in 2005.

QUICK FACTS

 
  • The Ontario government provided $183 million for construction on this section of Highway 69. The majority of the funding came from Ontario's Northern Highways Program.
  • The federal government contributed $11.6 million under the Strategic Highways Infrastructure Program towards the construction of an interchange, the Wanup Road fly-over, as well as the realignment of two kilometres of this portion of Highway 69.
  • The 2009 Ontario Budget committed $648 million to northern highway rehabilitation and expansion in 2009-10.
  • Investments in Northern Ontario's highway infrastructure in 2009-10 will create an estimated 4,700 jobs.
