Family Yorkie kicked, killed; father arrested

A 38-year old Fontana man has been arrested for allegedly kicking and killing his family dog, authorities said Wednesday.

Victor Lopez became angry Sunday morning when the two-pound Yorkie named Woody urinated on the floor, police said.

Lopez took the dog to the back door and kicked it about 15 feet to a concrete slab, said Sgt. Billy Green of the Fontana Police Department. Family members told police the dog did not move after hitting the concrete.

Four children aged 6 to 16 were in the room at the time, Green said.

Lopez was arrested on charges of felony animal cruelty and taken to the West Valley Detention Center, Green said.

He posted $25,000 bond and was released a few hours after being booked, according to jail records.

Family members told police it was not the first time Lopez had kicked the dog in anger.

Wrightwood woman who drugged, painted horses as part of sales scam sentenced

A San Bernardino County woman was sentenced to 41 months in prison and ordered to pay $273,000 in restitution for defrauding people who sought to buy horses from her.

Trina Lee Kenney, 32, of Wrightwood, painted horses to make them a different color and drugged the animals to make them appear more docile, prosecutors said.

Sometimes she did not provide a horse to buyers at all, and those under her care were frequently not watered or fed, a former employee told investigators.

Kenney “broke their hearts and stole their money,” said U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz, referring to the buyers, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Matz sentenced Kenney on Wednesday, ordering her to pay the restitution to 88 victims.

TV priest Mike Manning on leave after acknowledging affair

Father_manning A well-known San Bernardino priest with a large television ministry will take a leave of absence in the wake of the public disclosure of an affair with a school-system administrator in Northern California, church officials confirmed Thursday.

Father Mike Manning, a popular TV minister and technology pioneer who developed sermon applications for smart phones, will step down “to take some time to reflect on what he’s gone through and why it happened and to look at that in the context of his priesthood to get himself oriented so he can go forward positively,” said John Andrews, director of communications for the Diocese of San Bernardino. “Whenever a situation of sin with a priest happens that’s often what is recommended or decided.”

The decision to take a leave was reached mutually by Manning and local church leadership, Andrews said. Manning belongs to an order within the church called the Society of the Divine Word, which has ultimate responsibility for his pastoral assignments.

Manning has acknowledged a sexual relationship with Nancy Kotowski, the Monterey County superintendent of schools, which is an elected position. Kotowski is described on Manning’s Wordnet Production’s website as “Father Mike’s own cousin” and the author of a currently sold-out tract called “Dealing with Teenagers.” Published reports have clarified that Kotowski is a second cousin.

Manning told church colleagues that he had broken off the affair at least two years before its public disclosure in the San Bernardino Sun and other publications.

The Sun published excerpts of personal correspondence between Manning and Kotowski. Manning, who could not be reached, has not challenged the authenticity of the correspondence.

Authorities uncover sophisticated pot-growing operation in Crestline

San Bernardino Pot Bust

Authorities serving a search warrant on a home in Crestline on Wednesday found 237 marijuana seedlings and cloned plants in a sophisticated growing operation.

The plants were in a room with temperature controls and growing lamps, along with a small amount of methamphetamine, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.

Deputies apprehended Eric Dennison, 35, who lived at the home. He was booked on suspicion of cultivating marijuana and possessing methamphetamine and was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail, the department said.

Authorities said the search warrant was served after a deputy made a traffic stop of Dennison's vehicle and allegedly found a scale used to weigh drugs.

Former San Bernardino County supervisor pleads guilty in ongoing corruption case

Former San Bernardino County Supervisor William Postmus pleaded guilty Monday to three corruption charges and agreed to cooperate in an ongoing investigation, authorities said.

Prosecutors had alleged that Postmus accepted a $100,000 bribe to vote a for a settlement in 2006 of a lawsuit filed against the county by Rancho Cucamonga developer Colonies Partners.

At the time, Postmus chaired the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. The $102-million settlement over easement rights and flood-control improvements was approved on a 3-2 vote by the board against the advice of county and private attorneys, prosecutors said.

If Postmus provides true information to authorities, he will be sentenced to two felony charges of conspiracy to accept a bribe and conflict of interest in the Colonies Partners case and to felony misappropriation of government funds in a separate case stemming from his tenure as county assessor, according to the San Bernardino County district attorney's office.

Father tortured family before killing son, wounding wife, four kids, police say

San Bernardino police detectives on Thursday continued to investigate a bloody crime scene at a Del Rosa neighborhood home where police say a father tortured his family before his killing 16-year-old son and wounding his wife and four other children.

The Wednesday morning attack was so bloody and vicious that investigators still were trying to determine what weapon, or weapons, were used.

"It wasn't apparent from just looking at the victims if there was a weapon used, or more than one type of weapon used," said Cindy Bachman, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Ian Roderiquez, 35, was arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and torture, she said.

Robber shoots, wounds Dairy Queen employee during holdup

An armed robber shot and wounded an employee during a holdup Wednesday at a Redlands Dairy Queen, authorities said.

The robber entered the fast-food restaurant at 664 E. Redlands Blvd. shortly before 3:45 p.m., Redlands police said, and forced employees to open the cash register. He then forced the employees to the back of the store, where he shot a female employee in the leg before fleeing through a back door into the parking lot with an unknown amount of cash.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics, then taken to a hospital.

The robber is described as a black male in his 30s, about 6 feet 3 and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, gloves and a bandanna over his face.

Investigators believe the robber is the same man who held up Shear Perfection beauty salon, at 430 E. State St., on March 14 and Stell Coffee & Tea, at 1580 Barton Road, on March 7.

Redlands police ask anyone with information to contact Detective Frank Rocha at (909) 798-7580 or Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681.
