  Today in history: April 28  
1782: William Darlington, American botanist, was born in Birmingham, Pennsylvania. He would establish a natural history society in Pennsylvania and publish several works on botany.

1795: Captain Charles Sturt, English explorer of Australia, was born in India. He would find a route to the center of Australia and pioneer an overland route to Adelaide.

1854: Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, Danish botanist, died in London, at the age of 68. He spent much time in Calcutta, serving the East India Company's Botanical Garden there until he retired. The palm genus (Wallichia) is named for him.

1858: Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux received a $2,000 prize, beating out 33 competitors with their "Greensward Plan" design for Central Park in New York City.

1891: The Governor of New York approved a bill to incorporate a garden (now the New York Botanical Garden) within the Bronx gardens and zoo.

1897: Michigan adopted the blossom of the sweet crabapple tree (Pyrus coronaria, now Malus coronaria) as its state flower by an act of the legislature

1917: The governor of Alaska signed the bill designating the Alpine forget-me-not (Myosotis alpestris) as the official flower of Alaska.
