MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2
By Michael David SmithPosted: 05/08/2011 10:51 AM ET
Jose Aldo has now made his UFC debut and won the UFC's first featherweight title fight, an entertaining if not terribly competitive unanimous decision over Mark Hominick at UFC 129. So what does the UFC do with Aldo from here?
The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.
But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley
By Michael David SmithPosted: 05/08/2011 12:55 AM ET
Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.
Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.
All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Jay Hieron Beats Rick Hawn, Wins Bellator Welterweight Tournament
By Michael David SmithPosted: 05/07/2011 11:02 PM ET
Jay Hieron won a very close split decision victory over Rick Hawn Saturday night, taking the Bellator Season 4 welterweight tournament title.
The fight easily could have gone to Hawn, and one judge said it should have, scoring it 29-28 for Hawn. The other two judges scored it 29-28 for Hieron, who credited his training for getting him into the kind of shape he needed to be in to win three fights in Bellator's eight-man welterweight tournament.
"I just train my butt off, man," Hieron said. "No matter what's going on, I'm in the gym sweating."

Dominick Cruz Can't Wait to Punch Urijah Faber in the Face
By Ariel HelwaniPosted: 05/07/2011 10:15 AM ET
As part of the UFC's 'Super 7' presentation last week in Toronto, bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz talked about why he wants to fight Urijah Faber so badly, how he has improved since the first time they fought in 2007 and why he believes has the edge over "The California Kid."

My First Fight: Jens Pulver
By Ben FowlkesPosted: 05/07/2011 08:00 AM ET
Looking back now, Jens Pulver can't say exactly what he was expecting that day. A test, maybe. A way to find out something about himself that he'd only guessed at before.
The name of the event – The Bas Rutten Invitational 2 – sounded official enough. If the Dutch Pancrase fighter was affiliated with it, and if they'd already done it once without anything terrible happening, how bad could it be?
But since this is small-time MMA in 1999, we're not talking about a fancy event at a civic center. We're talking a couple hundred people packed into a Muay Thai gym in Littleton, Colorado, a town where just four days earlier two heavily armed teenagers had walked into Columbine High School and killed 12 classmates and one teacher before taking their own lives.

Gina Carano Agrees to Face Sarah D'Alelio in June Return
By Mike ChiappettaPosted: 05/06/2011 04:33 PM ET
Gina Carano's opponent for her long-awaited return fight will be Sarah D'Alelio, a Washington-based fighter with a 4-1 record who goes by the nickname "The Monster."
Sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that both fighters have agreed to the bout, which will take place on June 18 in Dallas. Over the last week, D'Alelio's name had been rumored as a possibility, but sources tell MMA Fighting that it's now essentially a done deal, and that the matchup may be officially announced as early as next week.

Unless Bout with St. Pierre Materializes Soon, Diaz Will Box Lacy in the Fall
By Ben FowlkesPosted: 05/06/2011 03:28 PM ET
Boxer Jeff Lacy has signed a contract to square off against Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in the boxing ring this fall, but Diaz's participation could be dependent on what Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, decides to do about his immediate future in MMA.
While boxing promoter Don Chargin told MMA Fighting on Friday that both Diaz and Lacy have signed bout agreements to face one another in a boxing match later this year, Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie, said Diaz has a contract with Chargin, but has yet to sign a specific bout agreement for this fight.
"Nick has a signed contract but is waiting to sign an actual bout agreement," Gracie wrote in a text message on Friday afternoon. "We are only waiting to see if Zuffa is serious about a Diaz-GSP fight."
Boxing promoter Chargin, however, sees it slightly differently.
