Tolkien completists won't find any of this overkill, but for those uninitiates among us, less is more is still a dictum worth heeding.

Fabulous, but also violent and scary.

"Fellowship" bears well the burden of exposition and character introduction, and also features two of the series' best action setpieces -not just visual-effects reels, but trials by fire of the camaraderie among this ragamuffin band of brothers.

In unveiling the Holy Grail for action-fantasy aficionados, director and co-writer Peter Jackson has begun a series to rival Star Wars in the pantheon.

The filmmakers have shown great respect for their source material. I was moved by Jackson's passionate, caring, and human portrayals of these characters and dramas.

Director Peter Jackson's awesome three hour film, seeming like half the time, is the handsomest fantasy film ever made. (Published 12-22-01)

It is imaginative, fierce, even thrilling in spots. Nevertheless, as the curtain comes down, the credits should read Game Over, not The End.

Everyone on screen is all exercised about Frodo's mission, but after three hours it's hard to see why anyone in the audience should be.

Only Jackson would have conceived of having a dwarf, in the middle of battle, declare 'NOBODY TOSSES A DWARF!' and only Jackson could have gotten away with it.

I believe I need to see this again before I give it a review...

Michael G September 29, 2006

Fellowship of the Ring is without a doubt the best of the three parts of the Lord of the Rings story. Even if the setup is on the lengthy side its completely justified and well worth it. The second half is a non-stop, unrelenting bombardment of chaos, amazement and fun. The set/costume design are top shelf and the cast

A difficult project so much larger than life, after a book that shaped a whole genre of literature for decades. And who would have thought beforehand: Peter Jackson did everything right. He cast the right faces, and had the best people work on special effects, weapons, masks, sets. Shooting it in New Zealand turned out
