System Shock 2 reborn - tagopt_brief-feature_type-

by Tom Bramwell

5/06/2003 @ 09:45

Those with a penchant for fighting perfect immortal machines would do well to dig that copy of System Shock 2 out from under the pile of mediocre sci-fi shoot 'em ups in the corner, and download a copy of System Shock 2 Rebirth, a user mod for the game by Etienne Aubert, of which the first public beta has just been released.

"Did you ever want to play System Shock 2 with new enhanced graphics?" the website teases. As this gallery of screenshot comparisons aptly demonstrates, Rebirth yanks SS2 kicking and screaming into the modern day world of curved bottoms and three-figure polygon counts, replacing all the original low-poly AI meshes with new high resolution versions.

What with the dearth of new and exciting games this past week, why not dig it out and give Rebirth a go? We will be.

Uh... what makes you think it's kosher, FWB? As far as I can see there's nothing to say it's been released as freeware, and The Underdogs is generally legally dubious, being of the 'you can't buy it anywhere so we'll put it up for download' ilk...

I was just about to change my post, Blerk, but you beat me to it:

Home of the Underdogs, while not an abandonware site per se (since our aim is to pay tribute to all underdogs, both new and old), supports the abandonware idea. We believe that providing games that have been abandoned by their publishers, while technically illegal, is a valuable service to the gaming community because these games are in danger of disappearing into obscurity, and their copyright holders no longer derive any revenues from them. For more information on our stance on abandonware, please read this section of our FAQ.

Yeah, its not techincally legit. My mistake.

The only thing I will say is that you can't download games from them which can be purchased. Instead they provide you with a link to a store.

EDIT: Should I remove those links then?

Cheers, but I guess my modem would go up in flames.

But nonetheless, as someone who once had the original copy, which I have either lost or which has been stolen, wouldn't I be allowed to download it anyway?

I need a lawyer...

Picked my copy up second hand for £2.99, surely the download of 200meg would cost more in phone time?

Now that would be lovely - though I get the impression I am exploiting my dial-up status. First ssuellid with the *cough* demo, now this...

Proposal: If you want to download it anyhow, and it does indeed work with the Underdogs copy (edit2: and it's worth it), you just drop me a mail... :-)

edit: I would look in the bargain bins too be honest.

I've never seen a copy of this anwhere, unfortunately, and I know the bargain bins around here by heart :-)

The Underdogs version seems to work fine so I'll see if this addon can be used with it and then let you know.

I've recently seen System Shock 2 on a shelf... 45 Euros. Arround 30something Pounds... AH. I love this stores. They still have old games, but that's because they never update the prices!
Anyhow, I already had System Shock 2 anyway :) I remember my old sessions of 4 player coop. Addictive stuff. Infortunally, the so called "workarround" for playing the game in XP/2k/NT didn't work on my XP :(

this along with thief is something people must own.

Fun fact: I hate System Shock 2 with the same passion that I love Thief 2.Don't recall why exactly, it's a long time ago that I played (and finished) the game. The only thing I remember is that playing System Shock 2 always made me so furious that I could only play it for about half an hour at a time.

/Blames everyone that hasn't bought the two games without a good excuse.

Lucky for me then that I have a good excuse: System Shock 2 might be good, but -in my opinion- it sucks. By the way, I bought Thief 2 (only 5 Euros, yay), while a friend of mine bought System Shock 2 (and made the fatal mistake of lending it to me).

System Shock was quite in fact one of the only games I'd call a real survival horror.
Your weapons keep jamming, you don't have any ammo, and the monsters keep respawning... YYYAAAAAA BEHIND YOU! LOOK A MONKEY!... please.... don't turn the light off. BAD AI! BAI AI!... I Still suffer from it. Like I said, the stress and fustration it provoqued on a player !SHOTGUN ZOMBIE TO YOUR SIX! was what it had best to offer. Many skills to learn, all of them usefull. !I'M ALL OUT! So usefull you could never pick which skill you really wanted. So usefull, that you'd miss not knowing how to repair a shotgun later.

If I have anything to say bad about System Shock 2, must be the hacking game. Even if funny, it was very basic, and the outcome was too random. I'd expect them to create some small addicting game, that required both coordination, timing and strategy (for ex. tetris, columns, etc) for the hacking game. The hacking game is too random to even be called a real game...

As for you who didn't play System Shock 2 yet, I'll keep it short by saying it blends FPS and RPG. You have to upgrade yourself, you have armors, implants, weapons, a backpack (limited space to carry your weapons, ammo, soda, etc), etc. There are also 3 branches. Fighter (specializes in weapon use and weapon damage), Engenier (specializes in hacking, repairing, etc) and Psi (specializes in supernatural powers, like levitating off reach objects, etc).
A Fighter would probably shoot a camera, while a engeneer would hack the system, and turn the camera off. The psi, would make himself invisible on the other hand :)

As you see, if you don't have the game, you don't know what you are missing. Specially playing with a friend of your coop :)

SS2 is fantastic co-operatively. For god's sake take different skill sets, though, or you'll be killing each other over ammo in minutes.

But being a hacker trying to shut down a security system, while an allied marine keeps the zombies off your back with his ever-depleting store of ammo... Happy sigh. Great experience.

seems a bit of a half assed job, as the levels remain identical. but seeing as its free you cannot complain.

atm im working with a team of people making a high-poly copy of GoldenEye using the Unreal2 engine (well, my job is simply nicking textures from the N64 game using an emulator and texture ripper atm)
