1948 : SIXTY THREE YEARS ON. . .
About this page . . .
2011 marks the 63rd anniversary of an-Nakba ("the Catastrophe"), as Palestinians call the period when Israel was created and Palestine disappeared from the map. To commemorate the Nakba, the Institute for Palestine Studies has compiled articles from past issues of its flagship Journal of Palestine Studies, and the maps and carefully constructed chronologies of events from its best-selling books Before Their Diaspora: A Photographic History of the Palestinians 1876–1948 and All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948.

Featured Article
Were they expelled or did they flee? And who was responsible? This question has dominated the discourse about the Palestinian Nakba from 1948 until the present. Renowned historian Walid Khalidi wrote a seminal piece in 1961 exposing “Plan Dalet,” a systematic Zionist military operation launched in April and May 1948, which led to the expulsion of the Palestinians and the creation of the state of Israel. Khalidi’s work has provided the basis for subsequent analyses of this issue.

Featured Memoir

The late Egyptian president began publishing his memoirs of this period in the Egyptian weekly Akher Sa'a in 1955, shortly after a massive Israeli raid on Gaza, which was then under Egyptian administration.
