From the «Bulletin of the Press Office of the Holy See»
N. 0340 of 30th June 2006
The Holy Father Benedict XVI has decided that starting from the forthcoming 18th September, with the resumption of the activities of the Vatican Secret Archives and the other Archives of the Holy See after the summer vacation, all the documentation relevant to the papacy Pius XI is made available to Researchers (6th February 1922 – 10th February 1939).
This liberalization, already wished for by the late Pontiff John Paul II of venerable memory, puts at the disposal of historical research, within the limits of the Regulations, all the documentary fonds up to February 1939 kept in the various series of the Archives of the Holy See and mainly in the Vatican Secret Archives and in the Archive of the Second Section of the Secretariat of State (former Congregation of the Extraordinary Ecclesiastic Affairs).
The consultation of the Archive of the Second Section of the Secretariat of State shall take place at the Vatican Secret Archives.
