Statement on Government Abuse of Media

Statement by Campaign of Ashraf Ghani

August 16, 2009, Kabul – The report released today by the Media Monitoring Project of Afghanistan shows that Karzai’s government is abusing the national television and radio to support his own campaign, instead of letting the networks operate independently as they are supposed to do.

This means that local and national media have now become a serious obstacle for voters seeking information about the candidates and issues.  Afghan voters are taking this election seriously and want to hear from all of the major candidates.

We call on the media to use the remaining days before the election to produce fair, balanced reporting and hold the debates originally scheduled to honor the Afghan people with the information they need to choose the next leader of their country.

Both Mr. Karzai and Dr. Abdullah are continuing to hide behind flashy marketing campaigns instead of thoughtful discussion and debate.   We call on the campaigns themselves to reflect the seriousness of the current situation in Afghanistan and to seize opportunities that will promote a civil political discussion.
