Despite clear skies in New York City, dozens of flights were delayed yesterday from the city's John F. Kennedy airport. That's because Mother Nature meddled with air travel in an unusual way: turtles on the tarmac. At least 100 diamondback terrapin turtles started their annual trek to lay eggs in a sandy spot, which just happens to be past runway 4L. The painstakingly slow turtle invasion started at 6:45 a.m., and within hours planes had to be moved to a different runway.
In a statement, JetBlue said, "We hope for faster animals next time." Naturally, the turtles already have a Twitter account @JFKTurtles and have already taken a stab at airport security.
