President Saleh, who suffered chest and neck wounds in the rebel attack on his residential compound on Friday, was met by a senior Saudi official when his medical evacuation plane landed in Riyadh. Although he walked off the plane, witnesses told Reuters that he had visible injuries to his neck, head and face. He was immediately taken to the capital’s military hospital where he will have medical tests done before undergoing surgery to remove shrapnel from his body, according to a Saudi source. Mr Saleh was also expected to have plastic surgery to mend wounds on his face and neck. Yemeni officials had repeatedly denied the president had any plans to leave, but early this morning the Saudi royal court confirmed that he had arrived at the King Khalid Air Base. A statement from the Saudi palace said a Saudi medical team traveled to Yemen to examine the president, then advised him to seek treatment in the kingdom. Mr Saleh agreed and left Saturday night, the statement said. The president was accompanied by the prime minister, a deputy prime minister, the president’s top security adviser, and the two heads of parliament, all of whom were also wounded in the attack, according to the Yemeni state
Police have named the four workers killed in a “tragic industrial accident” when a storage tank exploded at a Pembrokeshire oil refinery, engulfing them in a fireball. They were Julie Jones, a 54-year-old grandmother from Pembroke; Dennis Riley, 52, a grandfather from Milford Haven; Robert Broome, 48, a father of seven from Milford Haven and Andrew Jenkins, 33, a father of young twins from Milford Haven. Mr Riley, Mr Broome and Mr Jenkins were painting contractors working on the site Pembroke Dock, south Wales, which is run by the American company Chevron. Ms Jones was a fire safety official working alongside them. A fifth person, who has not been named, suffered horrific burns in Thursday’s blast and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital, said Dyfed Powys Police. Maintenance work had been carried out on a 730 cubic metre storage tank wh
British Apache attack helicopters destroyed a radar station and an armed checkpoint in their first mission over Libya on Friday night, as William Hague, the Foreign Secretary arrived in the rebel-held city of Benghazi for talks with the opposition. Apaches flying from HMS Ocean launched Hellfire missiles and 30mm cannon shells in precision strikes on the targets near the oil port of Brega, where Colonel Gaddafi’s forces and the rebels have been in stalemate for weeks. “The helicopters then returned safely to HMS Ocean,” said Major General Nick Pope, the Chief of the Defence Staff’s strategic communications officer. British forces had had a busy night, he continued. “In the same area, Royal Air Force ground attack aircraft destroyed another military installation, whilst a separate RAF mission successfully attacked two ammunition bunkers at the large Wad
