Top 30 Japanese Video Games 04/20/03

Our weekly rundown of what's hot in Japan for the week ending April 20, courtesy of Famitsu magazine.

Here are the top 30 best selling games in Japan for the week ending April 20, courtesy of the editors and marketing research types at Famitsu magazine.

The big story this week is Final Fantasy XI: Girade no Genei, which just barely missed the 100K mark in its first week. Girade is the first expansion pack for Final Fantasy XI, and by all measures it's a pretty big successabout 60 percent of PS2 FFXI players bought the expansion, and the disc fared much better than the 64,000 copies FFXI itself debuted with on its own first week.

As of right now, there are a little over 200,000 PS2 and PC users paying Square Enix 1280 yen a month ($10.65) to access the FFXI online servers. If you include FFXI's 7800-yen retail price, this means that an FFXI user who's been online for a year has spent 23,160 yen so farthe equivalent of three or four full-price console games in Japan. Square Enix has to spend money maintaining servers and such, of course, but from a monetary standpoint, FFXI may not be the failure may painted it out to be after all...
