UPDATE -- January 25, 1:30 PM ET: Sen. John McCain has made his opposition to Ben Bernanke's reconfirmation official. Here's the statement from his office:

"Our country is still facing an economic crisis and while I appreciate the service that Chairman Bernanke has performed as Federal Reserve Chairman, I believe that he must be held accountable for many of the decisions that contributed to our financial meltdown.

"Therefore, I plan to oppose Chairman Ben Bernanke's confirmation for a new term as Federal Reserve Chairman."

Sen. John McCain (R. Ariz) appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday and told host Bob Schieffer that he is "leaning against" voting to confirm Ben Bernanke as Fed Chair.

"I'm very skeptical about his nomination," McCain said. I'm worried that if his nomination is turned down, the effect that it might have. But the fact is that Chairman Bernanke was in charge when we hit the iceberg. And his policies were partially responsible for the meltdown that we experienced. I think that he should be held accountable. "

When asked if he thought Bernanke should withdraw his nomination, McCain answered that he should not. Schieffer press further: "Are you going to vote against him, or are you just concerned about him? "I'm both concerned and leaning against" McCain answered.

I actually totally agree w/McCain on this one. Bernanke & other others almost cause a second great depression, then he fixes the problem to the benefit of Wall Street, at the detriment of Main Street & that make's everything good? Now we're suppose to confirm him for a second term? I wonder what Bernanke has in store for us next? I can see it now -- welcome to world of Mad Max.

The problems leading to the financial crisis go back further than Bernanke. He didn't become chairman of the Fed until 2006. Before that was... oh who was it? Oh yeah! Alan Greenspan: the guy McCain said he'd prop up and make continue to be the chairman after his death.

So yeah, I won't be taking your advice on who to pick for Fed chairman, Senator.

Poor John. I guess that receiving your orders from the lunatic fringe is what passes for "mavericky" these days -- if they want your opinion they'll tell it to you -- and the answer is NO. Remember the good old days when you called the shots? I'd say the fundamentals of your campaign are weak at best.

McCain has JD Hayworth and the TeaBagExpress locked onto his exhaust jets. He will jettison anything in his cockpit to stay in office another term.

And to think he was 97 electoral heart beats away from the Presidency. Phew. That was way too close.

Who cares how McCain votes? Come on, this guy chose Palin for VP. How can he ever be taken seriously again?

McCain voted NO on EVERYTHING ever since President Obama was inaugurated. What's new? Why hasn't Huffington Post said so?

Enough with constantly giving hypocrites a platform to spew their mendacious utterances. Regardless of whether Bernanke should be reappointed, McCain has no right to say "hold him accountable". He is a fraud through and through. Nominating Palin was the most irresponsible action taken by a presidential candidate in my lifetime. As others have pointed out, who care what he has to say. Time for the main stream media to stop foisting accolades on such a contemptible person because of the honer he exhibited almost 50 years ago.
