Driver Hits Man, Pregnant Woman In Ypsilanti

POSTED: Wednesday, June 8, 2011
UPDATED: 7:27 pm EDT June 8, 2011

Ypsilanti police said a man and his girlfriend were struck by a car Tuesday in the 1300 block of Huron River Drive.

Police said 25-year-old Christian Jimenez and his girlfriend, Tenesha Bush, were waiting at a bus stop when an out-of-control car hit them.

Kimberly Burke, 21, was arrested after police said she hit the couple, fled in her car, tried to hide her car in the woods and changed her clothes. A passer-by found Burke walking with obvious injuries and called police, police said.

Police said Burke also ran over several mailboxes and street signs.

Burke was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to stop at an accident resulting in injury. She is suspected of driving under the influence, police said.

Burke's bond was set at $5,000 with the right to post 10 percent. She paid $500 and was set free Sunday from the Washtenaw County Jail.

Bush was five-months pregnant and suffered broken bones.

Israel Perez, Jimenez's father, said his son's condition was much worse than Bush's.

"The doctor that initially saw him said he will never be the same," Perez said. "That says a lot."

Perez said he is upset that Burke was set free after paying 10 percent of her bond.

"Why was she released?" Perez said. "That's all I want to know. Are you waiting for her to kill someone, actually?"

Jimenez has several broken bones, blood on his brain and will need a titanium plate put in his head, Perez said.

Burke is scheduled to appear in court next week.
