River Walk Drained; Mud Party To Follow

Trash, Debris Removed From River Bed

San Antonio's normally beautiful River Walk is now a giant puddle of mud.

The San Antonio River was drained on Saturday for annual routine cleaning and maintenance, leaving the river bed's of mud and debris exposed.

Paula X. Stallcup, director of Downtown Operations, said inspection and minor repair of the river walls below water level are necessary so that any potential problems can be addressed. Downtown Operations crews cleaned up trash and other debris along an approximate three-mile stretch of the River Walk, beginning at Lexington Avenue and ending at Alamo Street.

Public Works has been working with San Antonio Water System and the San Antonio River Authority to continue an inspection and investigation of the overall quality of the river water.

While some may see the exposed river as an eyesore, others, like Julio Davis, who works downtown, said they appreciate the effort to keep the river clean.

"It's beautiful," Davis said of the River Walk. "And all the cities don't have a river walk. They don't have a river in the city, and it all makes San Antonio a special city."

When crews begin to fill the river, the party will begin.

The annual Mud Festival, which runs from Thursday to Sunday, will feature events like the Mud Pie Ball, a Mud Coronation and the Mud Parade.
