Abandoned shopping trolleys
Shopping trolleys taken outside of shopping precincts can be hazardous and unsightly. Abandoned trolleys often:
- obstruct the road or footpath
- end up in waterways, causing build up of debris and restricting water flow
Abandoned shopping trolleys cost Brisbane City Council money to retrieve and store.
Shop owners
Shop owners are responsible for putting in reasonable measures to stop trolleys being removed from shopping centre precincts. For example, a coin-operated trolley return system.
Council may seize abandoned shopping trolleys and recover the costs of collecting and storing the trolley from the relevant shop owner.

Your responsibilities
If you use a shopping trolley, it is your responsibility to ensure the trolley remains in the shopping centre precinct. Council may issue on-the-spot fines if you do not have a reasonable excuse for removing a trolley from a shopping centre precinct.
If you find an abandoned shopping trolley, report it to the owner of the trolley.
