The Canon SX230 is the most well-balanced travel zoom available right now. This 14x zoomer (28mm wide) is built around Canon's successful "high sensitivity" HS system -- a backside illuminated CMOS sensor and Digic 4 processor. This boosts performance speed and aids low-light image quality. There are more than half a dozen similar cameras this year, but the SX230 gets most things right, and doesn't have any critical flaws, like the rest of the competition does. Image quality is very good, performance is quick, the design -- aside from a few irritating flaws carried over from previous generations -- is sleek and comfortable, and it sports a number of cool extras, like GPS geo-tagging. It won't be everyone's favorite travel zoom this year -- other cameras are faster, some have more versatile lenses -- but it's as close to a sure-bet in this genre as you'll find.
